VdV is one of the most talented players of this generation, even more talented than Iniesta, such as Robinho, but without hard work...

Mata is much more consistant IMO.
VDV is class but Mata is in a class of his own.

As an attacking midfielder i'd choose Van Der Vaart and as a winger i would choose Mata.
VDV is clearly superior to Mata as an AM.
Well overall though when you assess their various traits i think Mata probably edges him.
