Juve ponder Montolivo move
Juventus are hoping to hijack Milan’s move for Fiorentina playmaker Riccardo Montolivo, according to reports.
The Gazzetta dello Sport is today suggesting that the Old Lady are pondering a bid for the Italian international.
Montolivo will leave the Tuscan giants in January, for a nominal fee, or at the end of the season on a free transfer once his contract expires.
It was widely expected that the Atalanta youth product would be heading to the Rossoneri side of San Siro.
However, Juve director general Beppe Marotta will try to tempt the Stadio Artemio Franchi outfit into a sale by offering some players in return for the 26-year-old.

Giuseppe Marotta, do what you can to sign Riccardo Montolivo...che giocatore !!
Doubt it, though. Fiorentina will want to sell him him overseas before giving him to a Serie A club, no less their rivals, Juventus.

Not a fan of his at all but it makes perfect sense as Juventus need another midfielder for sure

Doubt there will be Luca, especially at the top level and for his price.
Plus, this to me makes sense. The criticism of Riccardo Montolivo has always been that he dies out after about 55'-70'.
Would this not be great ? Andrea Pirlo is not getting any younger, and yes I know Riccardo Montolivo cannot pass like Andrea Pirlo [who can in Serie A realistically ?] but it would mean taking him off and putting Andrea Pirlo, possibly next year when he will be unable to play both a European and a domestic match a week.
Just contemplating.

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
Yeah that is why I said it makes sense
He will not start over Pirlo, Marchisio or Vidal but he can relieve any one of them
The problem is, if he does join Juventus, Prandelli's hard-on will return and Montolivo will be a starting national team player
Either way, the trigger must be pulled on this one.

Naturally he will not start, but he will be a rotation player. However, this will never entice him. Firstly, he would be moving to a rival...and for what ? A bench role ? Secondly, he is free, which means every single solitary team will be after him who need a midfielder; I can see Internazionale Milano, AC Milano, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and maybe even Liverpool going after him.
If he wants to stay in Italia, which is a very strong likelihood, then the aforementioned teams will battle it out. I am not sure why, but I see Napoli as a surprise bidder for his services.

True... I forgot about the "nominal fee", and dusky look at it from Lucas perspective... Si it, if its the right deal and he's not a starter

Chances are he wants to start. No room for that here. I would take him but i doubt he would be okay with a bench/squad role

I am afraid of this as well... Last thing we need is a controversy over playing time between players.

what does that have to do with anything besides him needing starting XI time?

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
i dunno guys... im not sure how I feel about this move... I think he is massively overrated player. Although yes, it could work as a backup to pirlo... It doesnt seam lie hes the right player to ft the mould... our Juve is one built of toughness and mental strength (Buffon, Chiellini, Barzagli, Bonucci, Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Marchisio, Pepe) Montolivo shares no qualities with any of these players...
i dunno if its the right move... in theory, yes, but not sure about it in practice. hes a wimp, we dont need that.

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
This has nothing to do with being overrated. A vice is a important for Pirlo and Montolivio would be a perfect addition. Fab you bring up a good point, Montolivo wants a starting role, but everyone does. Put it this way, seeing that MIlan are the club closet to the player, how will he be a starter there? They don't need a regista as their midfield does not consist of them and they already have Aquilani who is in top form for them. That being said, theres no room for him there, and yet he's linked to go there, I find it odd. So to me, it makes sense if he does come to Juventus. A regista is needed and a vice at it really needed. Now if this is true, Marotta better not screw it up, he messed up with Poli and Aquilani, and if he misses another clear chance with a vital player that is needed, then he has no idea in what he is doing.

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
He is overrated, and inconsistent
but he doesn't have to play a large role at Juventus, he is still a quality option to have in the midfield
What other names are out there that will seamlessly fit into Juventus' midfield?
Marchisio, Vidal, Pirlo- they need cover
Sign Montolivo or someone else capable and also promote Gabriel Appelt

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
I'd rather have Poli, as he is actually a regista, whereas Montolivo is a hybrid regista/trequartista. Plus Montolivo is wimpy, which doesn't fit into our team culture with the players we have. Having said that, for a nominal fee I would take him, as Inter may sign Poli permanently, so we would never have a shot at him anyway. As long as he can accept a bench role, then it should be fine.
Also, Conte needs to determine over the next few weeks what kind of team we are. Are we a wing dependant team playing a 4-2-4, or are we a central midfield dependant team playing a 4-3-3. If we are indeed a 4-3-3 team going forward, then getting Montolivo on the cheap in January makes sense, and then we can sell 1 or 2 wingers. That way we still have wingers on the team whenever we wanna play the 4-2-4, but we also have enough midfielders in place to play our standard 4-3-3.
And by selling 2 wingers plus Amauri and Iaquinta, this will give us the funds needed to buy a top LB and maybe some cover for Licht.

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
Yeah but you also have to consider that Montolivo will have a lesser role, lesser dependency and he will just be nice to have.
His fee will be cheap as his contract is over at the end of this season, which also makes it an even lower risk signing.

It would be nice to have him if we play a 4-3-3 permanently, with a 4-2-4 in the mix depending on the opposition. If we switch back to a 4-2-4, then Montolivo would be useless, as he can't play the wing and I wouldn't want him in central midfield with only one defensive midfielder beside him.
Like I said, hopefully Conte decides before the winter mercato what formation he is going to play and then we can make the changes in January accordingly.

Re: Juve ponder Montolivo move
I see no reason to see why Juventus would switch back
Especially with their deadliest winger (Milos) set to leave in January
4-3-3 with healthy Quagliarella and another 1-2 good midfielders is the way to go
You have Elia and Giacch who can still do the job in the 4-3-3 too.
I agree that Montolivo and a 4-2-4 is useless

Yup, I agree. I think at this point Conte realizes that 4-3-3 is the way to go and that is the formation that maximizes Pirlo's talent. If you sell Krasic and add Montolivo that would be the way to go, as at this point Krasic is just a waste on the bench. And like you said, we would still have Elia, Giacch, Esti and God Pepe for the wing play, so it makes sense at this point just to sell Krasic.
As for Quags, I really hope he regains his form, cause he would be deadly in a 4-3-3 beside Matri with Pirlo behind them. Throw in Giovinco and the team up front would be complete really.
Of course if you want to compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid next year in the CL, then Marotta would have to go all out and get you know who in the summer...
