I came to the same conclusion. At the same time, he is a defensive midfielder, and he does have a tendency to kind of fade into the background, even when he's silently keeping the team afloat.

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of his performances are deemed to be closer to mediocre or unexceptional by certain rating systems.

Well I've already said all these awards are PR driven. Foden winning it isn't a surprise because he's English naturally the media will support that.

What about stats? Rodri won 5 titles compared to Vini 2 last season, scored/assist 25 goals for club and country as a DM, City had 72 game unbeaten record with Rodri playing the only losses they even suffered in those 72 games were 2 PK losses (Aresnal and Madrid), Rodri played 50 games compared to Vini 39, Rodri started 46 games compared to Vini 32. Even stats support Rodri. Vini isn't this worthy winner for a season award for 2 months worth of performance that you guys want to claim. Its not surprising the people who think this is a robbery is largely Madrid fans.

If this was Yamal VS Rodri, you're tune 100% would be different.

If we win the CL Yamal or Lewa will be contenders and they will probably give it to Lewa even if Yamal was better because of robbing him in 2020. These awards are all PR based, Rodri PR won over Vini and Bellingham PR, its better to move on from them. This will never change.

Wanted go say Uefa supercup but then realised it was just until 31 July.

Let's put it this way Vini won all bar 1 trophy for him club. Rodri won only 2 out of 7 and had an incredibly bad record against pretty much all big teams. Moreover, they came up against us in the CL and shipped in 4 goals over 2 legs where his defensive stats were worse than Camavinga's

I think Vini deserved it, since I prefer decisive attacking players to win, but let’s not do revisionism and act like Rodri isn’t clearly the best player in his position.

This isn’t a Jorginho thing. Maybe if Carvajal won yes. Rodri is the most influential CDM since Pirlo and he doesn’t have runners holding his hand defensively. The amount of creative responsibility he takes is unreal. 12G and 14A from a CDM who is not on set pieces. He scores clutch goals all the time too. City look like a 10x better team with him.

I imagine the reason Vinicius didn’t win is because he, Jude, and Carvajal ended up splitting each others votes. Recency bias kicks in a bit considering voting is right after international tournaments. Him being unlikeable didn’t help him either.

Although seeing the Madrid media/fan/club meltdown has been hilarious. I’ve never seen a more entitled group in my life. Clown show. Now they’re saying the award lost credibility and they won’t attend. It reminds me when they said the Madrid door doesn’t knock twice when Mbappe rejected them in 2022, then they opened their legs for him like a stripper this summer.

Rest assured the award will gain back its credibility when a Madrid player wins next time.

I brought up stats for the best player in the EPL question. You made it sound like there is some type of consensus among EPL fans that Rodri is the best player, which implies he's head and shoulders above the rest. I simply reiterated that neither fans (including City's), the media, nor the individual stats agree with this assessment.

The bias argument can be made against you as well. Hell most Barça fans aren't even bothering making the case for Rodri, they're just celebrating a Madrid player that they hate not winning it

I think I've been pretty consistent regarding these sort of players that hipsters try to shove down our throats every few years or so. I was on this very site arguing against Jorginho's BO campaign three years ago and I bet you were as well. But now that the choice is between a Pep player and a Madrid player....
