England winning is just as inevitable as Real Madrid in the Ucl final.

Not confident in our chances against them this final at all

Guys don’t overestimate Spain we are fun in attack but have serious holes in midfield and especially defence.

This team too and the manager has zero experience in finals whereas England have a lot of latter stage experience.

Surprised to see no discussion on the penalty here. I wonder what the rule says when a player completes taking shot and then is fouled or is it the kind of case where there is no clear information and decision is on referees discretion.

It was all up to the ref I think... depending if if affected Kanes shots follow through. Werent surprised he gave it cos seemed it wasnt complete b4 Dumfries studs caught him which kinda affected the shot.

Anyway, definitely VAR has affected many games n prolly outcomes, but its just part of it, arent perfect but it's better having VAR than not.

It wasnt a penalty simple as. No way, no how.

But discussing refereeing decisions is a low energy discussion and I never care to discuss them either.

Yep. Whomever is against VAR is absolutely retarded. So many bullshit goals and offside ones would've been allowed if not for it.

The input of VAR is 99% net positive.

Being against VAR is a severely low-IQ take and I cannot see how anyone can argue against that.

How can one find a flaw against an objective system rather than the bullshit eye test of referees?

Willing to take on anyone on this debate.

Euro 2024 - Page 29 Empty Re: Euro 2024

Post by Thimmy Thu Jul 11, 2024 10:31 pm

I think the refs should lose their jobs. The local complaints that I’ve read about VAR are all related to the on-field ref opting not to utilize VAR when it otherwise would have avoided drama and controversy, or referees who make errors in judgement when deciding to override the decision suggested by VAR.

I’ve witnessed this happen in the EPL, La Liga and the Bundesliga as well. It seems to be a flaw in the technology’s execution, rather than a limit to how accurately and effectively it’s capable of performing.

Refs are often hesitant to use VAR. I see this a lot in EPL and La Liga in particular. I assume this is because it often takes ages for the VAR room to communicate with the referrees, and it also might be a pride thing for the primary official who’s entire purpose has always been to consider and decide calls.

We’re neither here, nor there in terms of transitioning away from the old format. Human error is still largely involved in modern officiating, and before we were able to witness how VAR actually worked, I was under the impression that the point was to move away from human judgement and error as much as possible.

Sure, some would argue that it takes away some of the charm or spirit of the game, but it would result in more accurate officiating than what we’re seeing today if all of the power was moved to the VAR room, and the on-field referees were either replaced by sound and visual indications for final decisions, or a dedicated referee on the sidelines who’s only job is to convey VAR’s decisions to the players.

It seems to me that they’ve attempted to preserve the human element for the sake of appeasing the purists/conservative fans among us, and I understand that point of view - but this really wasn’t what I had imagined when VAR was talked about as a concept. It hasn’t made the huge leap in accurate officating that was suggested. It’s an expensive technology that has improved things to some extent, while still leaving some wiggle room for inaccurate decisions to be made. Maybe it’s a good thing that robots or AI haven’t taken over, but I’m not particularly impressed that referees like, Antonio Lahoz have been able to leave their mark on the VAR era either. There’s definitely room for improvements.

When comes to using technology and human discretion I feel cricket has done a very good balance in implementation and therefore had been less controversial thus far. May be it's because the two sports are different but I have seen them more willing to correct error or adjust the rule as soon as they are spotted whereas I. Football it takes a long route of decision making.

I think it did, in my view human error is significantly limited and reduced. Offside goal are basically completely eradicated. The absolutely vast majority of incorrect decisions are getting reversed etc. There is room for improvement but the leap in the overall number of correct and fair decisions is consequential and priceless

There will always be some aspects where technology alone cant provide a conclusive verdict like with the positioning of the hand in handballs, it doesnt understand how humans react and ultimately another human has to interpret the bodily movements. Unless conscious AI emerges and can do it lmfao but infringements like handballs will probably always be disputed in some way
