Re: Europa League 22/23
Everytime I see EPL teams in Europe (minus City) they struggle to match the intensity of other teams. You'd think that they would have experience of running endlessly with their back and forth way of playing in the league

That’s the best you can come up with! I for one was pleased that you took crooked Barca out of the competition. But you are ignoring the 6 year streak!

Roma just unleashed it all after Dybala came on. Was scared at Feyenoord scoring but he scored a clutch goal there.

Because it's not a resurrection, they did well but this is a one off, will not happen again soon.
Still nice to see.
Napoli is the only team that seems to be in an upward swing, while Inter and Milan are going downwards and look to be losing important players for next year.

I've barely paid attention to the team this season, but I did tune into this game and yeah, they brought it in the 2nd half. Matic was everywhere. So essential to this side. MOTM for me.

It’s the first time since 80s or 90s that Italy has had the majority of teams in CL or EL (back then it was called UEFA cup) quarters or semis. That’s 30 to 40 years ago. Definitely it is a resurrection. They may not be favorites nor as you suggest on an upswing, but it is a surprising twist from past decade or two.

For me, a resurrection would mean that top Italian teams and Serie A in general are strong again. These are one off results.
At this time, the teams simply aren't financially strong enough to be at that level consistently.

Re: Europa League 22/23
That’s the whole point isn’t it? Despite not having the budgets of oil nation teams, a few EPL teams plus Real Madrid and Bayern, they have put an amazing number of teams in the later rounds of strongest European competitions. No one said anything about sustainability. It’s a remarkable achievement.
That’s the state of affairs in this financial disparity world of soccer these days. Only 9 or 10 clubs have budgets to purchase top players. So any club making it to final rounds of these competitions is an achievement and for a country other than England, Spain or Germany, having the majority of teams is exceptional and hasn’t been done for 2 or 3 decades!!
Why you keep putting them down is puzzling to me!

Re: Europa League 22/23
It is also puzzling to me why you keep pulling them up. No one alive thinks getting to the semis of CL and EL is not an achievement, but most of the teams aren't looking great domestically and they've gotten lucky with an easy route all the way, not meeting top opposition once, while top teams had to go against eachother early.
I am very happy to see Italian teams up there as a lifelong Serie A fan, but let's not make things out better than they are.
Most impressive thing for me so far has been Inter managing to progress from the groups, leaving Barca behind.

Re: Europa League 22/23
I find Serie A is poor quality this season. Napoli being so far ahead says enough
That side of bracket with 3 italian teams and Benfica is a providential gift for a team like Inter looking to save their season after being winless for over a month. Milan and Juve not very impressive either, Roma are at their expected level.
While i agree with Bill Serie A teams going far in Europe comps is a nice throwback, i also agree with Vibe that nothing indicates a resurrection or blossoming of italian football.

Re: Europa League 22/23
Having only less than 10 teams that can buy top players has a lot to do with it. You can make a case for decline in all countries. Even the EPL is in a decline as many of the top players just aren’t working out, as well as high prized coaches, which is the reason so many of them have flopped in Europe competitions.
So the Italians must have incredible luck in draws! And it has nothing to do with so many big clubs struggling!!
If that were true, why not the Spanish or Germans or Portuguese?
In the last 30 years, the only times a single country has had the majority of semi final positions in European competitions have been Spain, EPL or Germany!!
No where, did I say anything about sustainability nor that any of the survivors will win!

Re: Europa League 22/23
Sevilla probably the most improved team in world football right now. From relegation candidates to being on the cusp of the EL final and being practically safe in the league. Mendillibar has 0 European experiecne too. Classy manager, I like him

Re: Europa League 22/23
Roma take the lead on Leverkusen.
20-year old Edoardo Bove tapped in the rebound from Tammy's shot.
The game has been rather pedestrian, but that suits us I would imagine.

Positive result considering all those injuries in the back right now. Good to see Chris Smilling might be returning for the 2nd leg. The best Ive seen Bove so far. Him and Matic work well together.

Re: Europa League 22/23
Yeah good result. Not conceding in the home leg is always a big boost. Diaby had minimal impact today and that's key as well. Need to contain him again next week. I think it's going to be a different proposition.
