Netherlabds the eternal underperformers in the big tournaments, continues. Their old problems seem to remain, many stars (this time actually having less, biggest name prolly Depay lol), but still they dont work that well as a team, and physically lacking vs the Czechs, defending was poor as usual. Depay was meh, I guess confirming my 0 hopes for him at Barca lol, not even sure if he would be much of an upgrade on Braithwaite.

Frank De Boer, good player, but once again failures as coach.

Czech have a good h2h vs Dutch, and they often do well in tournaments despite not having big name players.

Manager is problem. If Koemean stayed , they would have made better. I rate Netherlands close to Italy as level, but they look like much more distant due to FDB

It's mission impossible when they're on 10-men and having to chase the game. What do you do? Subbing attacking players, having to attack to score, but you must not concede. Malen properly rounding the keeper and we'll hear a whole different story. De Ligt really shouldn't handle the ball there. It's better to let Schick score and then mount a comeback. But I guess it's an instinctive decision.

I don't think Czech would beat Netherlands if they still have all 11 men. And if they're through here, anything could happen later. Fair play to Czech though, it was a professional display. They played solidly, used the ball well, and grabbed the chances superbly. And yeah they have HOLES being everywhere, West Ham's FPL Gods Coufal & Soucek, and Helmut Schick

So similar to Italy, Holland's group was too easy I take it?!

Yeah it seems so. But we should see the other last 16 matches first to gauge it better

I think Netherlands performs well in big tournaments. Like in 2014, they don't have a good squad, but they go all the way to semifinal and only losing on penalties. But this time, they don't have good enough players. And Depay is no Robben

Czech do have remarkable record against Netherlands. Netherlands have unwanted record of 4 red cards against Czech. Czech currently don't have big name players, but the Czech that beat the Dutch before certainly did lol. Their 2004 squad was excellent. Superb midfield with Nedved, Rosicky, Poborsky & Galasek and Baros couldn't stop scoring and combining well with Jan Koller. And they did have good teams before in 96 and when they were Czechoslovakia. They generally did well in Euros and didn't do as good in World Cups. Whilst the Dutch in the past decade did well in World Cups except the last, but didn't do good in Euros

The Dutch were exposed as individual talented players who can't play as a unit when it matters. The Czechs, while less heralded, were far more cohesive and functional.

Which is why I said less "heralded". They are indeed better than credited and not at all average. Just less regarded. They work hard, maintain focus, and are very good technically and tactically. Soucek particularly is the one I like the most in that midfield. His late runs into the box are very dangerous. Similar to Locatelli's for Italy.

You just can't get away with giving red cards in a knockout round. It was game over the moment De Ligt got a red card. De Boer's subs made it even worse lmfao.

As bad as De Boer is, I don't know what could he do the moment Netherlands were 1-0 behind and on 10 men. His main system is a 3-5-2 in which the wingbacks play very high up the pitch. They're forced to play 4 at the back, they lost on numbers, they have to attack, but they must not concede. His non-achievement with Inter and Palace made him a meme, but I don't think even the best managers can make their team do an epic comeback in that situation.

Soucek is great, very dependable. He utilized his huge posture to the optimum as well, winning aerial duels and connecting to crosses on the end of his late runs.

Malen has to lift that over the goalie, he did such a good job but it seemed predictable he was going to attempt to round the goalie there. May have been ruled out for a foul anyway.

Once De Ligt thought he was going for a rugby try, it was an uphill battle. Did he think by handling the ball, the ref was going to be forced into giving him a free kick?
