The "best third" however is dreadful stuff. It's a system that i can only tolerate in baseball because the regular season last 162 games... not a round robin of 3 games

IMO open it up to all members , make members 17-55 by FIFA ranking play 3 rounds of single round elimination, keep 8 of them, and then move into the familiar group, quarters, semis ,etc with the remaining 24. Why even have qualifiers

Amazing idea which is why it won't happen.

Group C provides some entertainment. I did not expect much from Ukraine vs Macedonia it ended up being a real battle. VAR tried its best to ruin the game by awarding a questionable penalty, thankfully saved by Dimitrievski.

Macedonians can be proud of their guys. At 0-2 i've seen far better teams giving up. They controlled the match in second half just could not finish.

Wijnaldum and De Jong were very good, cant win the ball from them and they have great energy.

Wijnaldum certainly lacks the final ball, if he had that he would be quite a player.

The Netherlands are not convincing and I think Austria made a mistake in not having Alaba higher on the field, at least as a number 6.

Some interesting dynamics, perhaps just because Austria also used a back 3 but for Wijnaldum jumping up to press in a front 3 with De Jong and De Roon left behind. I can imagine a team like France or Belgium playing balls into the space between wingback and centerback and causing alot of problems to Blind or De Vrij in those moments.

Netherlands should cruise to the first place today vs Macedonia.

Ukraine-Austria direct match for who gets 2nd place. Draw favors Ukraine. Winner plays Italy.

I wouldn't really worry about Austria, easier opponent for us imo. Ukraine should still be manageable but has more dangerous players than can score at any time.

I know it's Macedonia and all, but it feels like Barca missed out on not signing Wijnaldum. He plays as a 10 for Netherlands which gives him more freedom unlike his role at Liverpool. He would've been a great midfield runner for them. He has the athleticism, off the ball runs, and technical quality. He's not much of a risk taker in terms of passes, but the qualities he does have are what Barca needs.

Great signing for PSG. Paredes-Verratti-Wijnaldum will be one of the best midfields in the world. No doubt about it.

Wijnaldum turns 31 in november. Not a big loss imo in prospects for the future anyway

Pandev actually played well in this match. Great flicks and passes almost resulting in 2 assists. Wijnaldum is very effective with his runs to the box, he became the aim of so many cutbacks and last passess. Malen also did well in this game, very good in bringing the ball forward and combine well with his teammates

We didnt missed out on an upgrade in midfield. But with our financial situation, I guess anything will do now just to keep Messi hopefully, no other hopes realistic...

Pandev, his career highlight for me was knocking us out with Inter ffs, he was so good in that game together with all those Inter players that year

I agree on some level. He was used differently at Pool so we didnt see these qualities as much but he is actually a very good offensive midfielder. He does lack the final pass, but everything else is pretty good. Good timing and finishing.

Not frustrated with Barca on this one though, the wage difference is ridiculous and I think we can find a similar type of player.

On the Netherlands, they are rounding into form here and look a dangerous team. Blind and De Ligt give them tremendous options to make plays from deep, the midfield has a nice balance to it with De Jong really having a hand in everything and in the front, Depay and Wijnaldum have a great connect and Dumfries is a constant threat with his blindside runs.

Netherlands is a very talented team but they're too raw IMO and will fold against a more experienced opponent.

Well yeah, certainly cant be favored over the very very best.

I dont know about fold though, they should be relatively competitive.

this guy had a gigantic season at France and his one of the best upcoming CB. surely better choice to sub / compliment de ligt or de vrij

I guess they're always gonna be in the squad as they're the regular squad members since Koeman's days and dependable from the bench. If Botman were to come, it will be in place of Timber. Managers don't usually bring all the talents at once, they will incorporate them step by step, unless the talent is unbelievable or they have lack of quality in that position
