I assume the "on a free" part is crucial here

Im not a fan of Kessie personally but we have only 1 dm who frankly is totally finished and unfit for the modern game.

Barca needs last minute goals to beat the likes of Alaves every week if they aren't losing. Milan is definitely at a higher level than them these days.

I imagine Xavi envisions that Kessie fills the Keita role. He's always talking about wanting to bring back the values of Pep's Barca.

That means having a technical midfield with the 4th midfielder being more physical.

Unless the long term goal is to go 3-2-4-1 like he did in Qatar.

Mazraoui plays as an inside fullback for Ten Haag or on the right side of a back 3. Christensen plays in the middle of a back 3.

He might want Kessie and FDJ as a double pivot in a square midfield, with Pedri and Fati in between the lines.

If he goes 4-3-3 I can't imagine Kessie starting. He was only ever good at Milan in a double pivot anyways.
