Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Barry is very much fantastic TV. ronny/lilly (the episode you're referring to @pedram) is one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. I haven't laughed that much in a very long time.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Finished White Lotus, Season 2 was miles better imo because the characters were more real and relatable. season 1 was good but i absolutely hated some characters, Shane and the two stuck up bitches were just caricaturish and not really an archetype of real world people.
Overall 9/10, a great show that is definitely worth your time.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
I think they were different. I obviously found Shane contemptible but thought it was funny how he was right about everything and still got punished for calling that out. Made him a tiny bit more relatable
S2 was great for both Tanya and the double couple dynamics (plaza what an actress), but the 3 generations of toxic masculinity thing of the De Grassis didn't really work for me and I kept wishing we got back to the other storylines.

What's people's thought on Albie? I see he's getting a lot of shit on Reddit for being a white knight/nice guy, some even called him misogynist which i felt was undeserved, from my perspective he's just a naïve boy who excessively put women on pedestal and paid dearly for it (of course from his dad's pocket).

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
- Spoiler:
- I think he is clearly meant to be a "nice guy" and the show made a point of calling out how "nice" he is. Selling out his mom to live his white knight fantasy was unforgivable imo, but the ending leaves some room for growth there

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
"white knight"/"nice guy" all just butthurt feminist terminology with no real application in real life... i agree with you Pedram he was just a naive boy who needed real life experience of how women actually work.
@BC i actually enjoyed the De Grassis family line... my review is on the previous page if you missed it.
Also i agree Pedram, much more enjoyable season this one. Hope the series continues!

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
- Spoiler:
- Again the issue is not so much that he naively fell for an escort's plot but that he sold out his own mother in the process. In the first episodes when his father tried to get him to vouch for him he took a principled stance, said that he won't do it and that the father needs to show her he has changed. 3 days after meeting the escort he freely offers talking his father up to his mom in exchange for 50k (a sum neither cares about very much). It didn't take a whole lot for him to turn on her.
And for what? He wasn't in love with her. He just wanted to swoop in and save her, ie being a white knight.

- Spoiler:
- He didn't sell his own mother though, he already spoke to her before getting the 50k, he just didn't tell his father and used it as a bargaining chip to get 50k from him, surprised you missed this small detail BC.
And no he wasn't being a white knight, he genuinely believed he had a chance with the escort girl (again showing how naïve he is) and that the 50k would convince her to move with him to the US. I honestly believe he already knew this would happen but still did it because he wanted to save her or at least feel good about himself, it's clear that he just has a savior complex and feels women like her need to be "saved" which is not true.
Anyway the girl was playing him from the start, she saw how innocent he was and decided to take advantage of this fact, she herself admits this in a scene with Mia when she tells her they won't be punished and that she wishes all men were like this. in the end she refused the pay for sleeping with him a few times but she scored big in the end.

also what's so wrong with wanting to be a "white knight"/ having a "savior complex"?

Some people take offense at the idea of women not having an agency of their own, it's a feminist principle.

- Spoiler:
- I understood the timeline a bit different
1. He takes a principled stance against advocating for his father as he expects him to show her real growth to fix it
2. He uses his influence on his mother as a bargaining chip
3. Having made the offer, he goes ahead and advocates for his father
4. His father wires the money, informs Albie, and Albie answers back tht he already did his part
I suppose it's intentionally left open-ended, as many other matters in the show are, but if this is the correct interpretation then it does feel like he sold her out. I think this is the right take because we never saw the character growth that Albie demanded so it made no sense for him to advocate without wanting something in exchange.
If it's not though, then I agree there's not much to hate on him about except him being naive and getting disabused of his prior notions about women by the end of the series.

Same. I was far too young to catch the political overtones of this show when I watched it as a teen. Back then it was all about the CGI, saying "frak" and Kandsye McClure

I was more into Tricia Helfer tbh, but I vividly remember a scene, I think when Kandsye was wrestling Apollo, she had the finest booty on the show

The way the show toyed with politics and religion in the middle of a spaceship while being chased by killer robots is all you can ask from televion, prime stuff.
So say we all

I'll watch Natasha Lyonne in just about anything so poker face is definitely on my list.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
so 3 episodes into Poker Face and i've increasingly become annoyed by the plot device and Natasha Lyonne's annoying character/style of acting
loved the first episode, and thought i was in for an awesome series... i also don't mind the anthology element of introducing a whole set of characters and events for each episode... but by the 3rd episode it became clear to me what this whole thing is gunna be...
so basically every episode something bad happens and Lyonne steps in to the save the day with her highly deus ex machina/macguffin style character... it's stupid and predictable. So much so that the bad guys often have a whole lot more character and motif to them, you end up believing the plot would advance more interestingly if they got away with what they did instead.

so Chloe Sevigny was in episode 4 and i saw from the future episodes trailer that Ron Pearlman and Joseph Gordon Levitt will also guest star... honestly i love the new characters and events every episode, so i will ignore Natasha Lyonne's cringe as best i can
interested to hear what rest of you think of the show
