Seems like FSG noticed Michael Edwards and his role in signing key players, then promoted him to Sporting Director of Liverpool. Reading articles here and there, he and the scouts at Liverpool got players like Coutinho to Liverpool. If you are interested a short article I copied about him from a website:
- Spoiler:
- Article wrote:Edwards was promoted into one of the most powerful roles at Anfield in November 2016 - the newly-created position of sporting director
You've probably seen the name Michael Edwards a lot recently as Liverpool act good on their promise to do their transfer business early.
That's because Edwards is the man who makes it happen at Anfield.
He was promoted into one of the most powerful roles at Liverpool in November 2016 - the newly-created position of sporting director.
It’s a structure which club owners Fenway Sports Group were been keen on for several years - Louis Van Gaal’s name was in the frame in 2012 - but one which was abandoned when Brendan Rodgers agreed to become manager in the same year.
Jurgen Klopp is a firm supporter of a structure he worked successfully in at Borussia Dortmund with Michael Zorc.
The future identification and recruitment of players is perhaps the most publicly identifiable aspect of Michael Edwards’s new job - and probably one which will define his success.
Yet despite the position being filled through an internal promotion - and Edwards being a former member of a Liverpool transfer committee which was never far from the headlines in the past - for many Liverpool fans the man behind the deals remains can seem like a little known figure at times.
Our friends at the Liverpool Echo tell us all you need to know about him...
Edwards was born in Southampton but started his football career at Peterborough United where he came through the youth system and was an apprentice professional when they were in the Championship, playing as a full-back.
He was released after getting no further than the reserves and went into education, getting a degree in business management and informatics at the University of Sheffield. He continued to play semi-professionally.
Portsmouth in 2003 was his big break. He was taken on as an analyst there working with manager Harry Redknapp when the Premier League started to employ the analytics company Prozone.
Each club had a Prozone analyst and Edwards fulfilled that role at Fratton Park.
Since he had a football background Edwards was able to build up a better rapport with players than most people in such roles. The department expanded and he became Head of Analysis for the side then owned by Milan Mandaric.
He led pre and post-match analysis, just as he has done at Liverpool.
He left Fratton Park in 2009 after six years in his role. He went to Tottenham where he was asked to fulfil a similar role and build a newly expanded analysis department at White Hart Lane, where Harry Redknapp was again manager.
He worked primarily on opposition analysis as well as analysing the performance of the Spurs team.
He packed London in after two years and moved to Liverpool in 2011, with then Director of Football Damien Comolli - who had also been at Spurs - instrumental in bringing him to Liverpool.
He arrived as Head of Performance and Analysis. The first thing he did with Liverpool was to look at how football was analysed at the club and instigated a restructuring both at Melwood and the Academy.
He managed the analysis side for successive managers from Kenny Dalglish through Brendan Rodgers and now Jurgen Klopp.
His relationship with Rodgers was known to be somewhat strained with the Ulsterman making his view on sporting and technical directors plain after he was appointed.
Rodgers said: “For me coming in, I was always going to work with a team of people, rather than a director of football. I always think the manager is the technical director.
"He is the man who oversees the football development of the club, and I believe you should take on that responsibility when you are manager.”
Edwards' relationship with Klopp is said to be 'terrific' and his appointment to the new role is seen as an “obvious” one internally.
His data-driven ethos tied in perfectly with FSG'S "Moneyball" philosophy of using statistics to find value in the transfer market.
n June 2013 he was promoted to the role of director of technical performance and was then made technical director in August 2015, basically running football operations which had three main strands.
First he instigated a fundamental change into the way Liverpool scout, both at first team and Academy levels, and oversees that. Second he continued to manage the analysis side for the club.
The final string to his bow was setting up a research department at LFC, something which has since become more commonplace at Premier League clubs.
For 12 to 18 months prior to his promotion he was working alongside Ian Ayre in contract negotiations. With Ayre moving on at the end of the season he will step up to be the lead in those same contract talks.
Securing players will often be down to him although specific targets may be approached in different ways. For instance Jurgen Klopp might take the lead in attracting a top German player.
That’s the way he likes it. His picture wasn’t even on the Liverpool FC website prior to being made Sporting Director.
He’s very much someone who likes to get on with things in the background rather than be any sort of public face although his successes recently have seen many fans sing his praises.
Primarily his job is to support Jurgen Klopp, with player identification and recruitment while continuing the flow of information to the coaching team.

He heads the team looking at the strategic direction of the club in footballing terms and is certain to be heavily involved in the project looking at joining the first team and Academy training centres together.

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
Alisson was great through out the game apart from that mistake. Looks composed with crosses and made few good saves.
He was bound to make an error with his approach of dribbling players. Luckily this time we won, or I would be pissed af. Hope he learnt his lesson, this is not Serie A with slower pace. It's great that this mistake happened early into the season without costing us points, so he can learn not to dribble players anymore.

Hope he continues to dribble players. It's part of his game, and his game is what makes him great, and one mistake should not have him change it.
As if strikers stop taking volleys just because they embarrasingly miss one once in a while

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
you can't possibly compare a volley to a GK trying to dribble a striker with no one behind him, it's a poor example.
A GK dribbling a player is a farce, play the pass and keep the game going.

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
Unlike Hans, I don't see why needs to continue dribbling players. Just punt it upfront when you're 2-0 up. Thankfully we are much better now so we ended up winning and I'm so glad he reserved this brain fart for a game we won.
All this being said, he's a class goal keeper and will hopefully not pull this shit off again.

He doesn't NEED to, but it's great if he does from time to time. He's a Brazilian ffs, we need to be entertained.
There's few things I love more in football than Neuer making crazily risky dribbles and pulling them off juuuuuust

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
We should absolutely laugh at this mistake accordingly, really glad that Pool didn't keep a clean sheet on the back of a laughable error such as this because could you imagine the over-analysis of both Virgil and Alisson if another clean sheet was had already? Humbling

Na Luca, this is a goal conceded of probably a very high amount of irrelevance considering we won. We've started brilliantly and I hope we can maintain this.

It's irrelevant because of the eventual outcome, but the even itself is like a striker missing a sitter, or a defender with a poor backpass leaving a player in on goal, these moments are certainly important, it's ok to acknowledge them accordingly, Alisson is still amazing and Pool did win but he still made a laughable error

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
The only player capable of beating Alisson so far this season:
This is Alisson's first mistake that led to a goal since he came to Europe. Liverpool GK position is cursed, seriously.

Na buster, we hire a bunch of muppets and then the decent guy who came in becomes overconfident. Nothing can be as bad as last year but Allison needed that kick up ass if hes going to be doing this regularly. Glad it happened today and we still won.

Re: OFFICIAL : Alisson to Liverpool
if alisson goes 3 games with 3 clean sheets then gives 1 goal away from a mistake for the next 10 years i will take that right now tbh.
