When I started watching Liverpool Stéphane Henchoz and Sami Hyypiä formed an enviable and almost impregnable CB partnership. This later evolved into Sami Hyypiä and Jamie Carragher. Subsequent partnerships of Jamie Carragher & Daniel Agger and Daniel Agger & Martin Škrtel also provided considerable continuity and certain degree of solidity. Mamadou Sakho came with a lot of promise and delivered to some extent as well.

The fact that Virgil van Dijk thread is started with half a dozen former center-backs underlines the current state of our CB partnerships and the expectations endowed on him.

Don't judge him by the price-tag. Salah isn't worth £40 mil, Coutinho isn't worth £8 mil, Ibe isn't worth £15 mil (and don't let me start about Neymer). While Lallana (£20 mil), Mane (£34 mil) and Firmino (£29 mil) looks every bit worth of the money we dished out. In this crazy world transfer amount is a random number someone is willing to pay.

I haven't watched him that closely (very little actually) but by all account he seems to be a very good player and at 26 has 6-8 good years ahead of him. Long may he stand tall. YNWA.
