When pepe was suspended or injured, ramos played CB. Man u came after Ramos because Mourinho wanted him gone and there were rumors Ramos wanted to leave if benched... remember Ramos allegedly asking Flo if he could go to Barca.

And Varane was a better CB than Ramos the moment he was born.

Ramos is a garbage defender. He really is. Big reason is that he's completely unpredictable. If he was consistently weak in area and strong in others, a team could compensate. But you can't compensate for a guy who changes profiles literally from game to game.

Not to mention not understanding the offside rule as of yet.

Ah once again you go off topic and ignore.

Sure Ramos played CB when Pepe was out, but he was converted to full time CB at Carvalho’s expense. So at no point was Carvalho better than Ramos.

ManU went after Ramos and Flo gave him a big contract, something they never did with Pepe. And thus Pepe was never considered better than Ramos.

And with Varane, only in past year has he reached a top CB status and despite your opinion, it is debatable as to which one is the best CB. What I will agree to is they are the best CB pair in the world.

And when you offer your opinion as a de facto consensus, it is at best only on GL. Whenever players, coaches, public in general are asked, Ramos is always listed as a top CB.

Sometimes I feel like the spectre on Ramos is so large that we forget how incredible a player and defender he is. He went through a run of 4 CL semis and finals and he was absolutely clinical.

There is no one in football who has been that good, at that high a level, with such consistency. It's just a fact.

Show me one CB who has to perform with a fullback as reckless as Marcelo day in and day out. You have guys like Godin who are praised as gods when they play in extra conservative systems where everyone defends till death but somehow it doesn't bother anyone

Actually agree. Ramos is great.

Sportsczy will degrade Ramos and praise Varane just because one is French and the other is not.

But Ramos is clearly better. Very unique player.

Nothing to do with that. I think Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho were much much better CBs than Ramos will ever be too... and I was a huge critic of Pepe. But Pepe became an incredible defender for 3 years. I considered Pepe and Godin the best CBs in the world along with Silva and Chiellini for a few years there (honorable mention to Barzagli).

And Varane is considered the best Cb in the world because of his defending, not his scoring nor his personality. Basically, he's being judged on what a CB is supposed to be judged on.

Better because they are not in the limelight like Ramos. With Ramos we tend to remember the bad moments, not the good ones like with the others.

Well I mean the others (like Pique for example as well) didn't have a Ronaldo or Iniesta/Xavi/Villa to compensate for their big mistakes. Nobody pays attention to mistakes if the team is winning as an outsider. Only actual fans pay attention to the details.

Not saying Ramos is a bad player... he's a very good one. But the main attributes that make him a very good player aren't defensive. His leadership and scoring ability are his redeeming qualities as opposed to his defense. So when you say that Ramos should be considered not only a great CB, but one of the the greatest CBs ever... i have to wholeheartedly disagree. I'd agree if people said that Ramos was one of the best big game performers of his generation... no doubt there. But does that make you a great player? It's part of it. But a larger part is actually being really good at what you're supposed to do.

Also, Varane is far better CB than Ramos. As soon as Varane shook off those constant injuries and started to play more consistently, he became our Mr. Dependable at the back.

Not to mention Varane was absolute class against Germany lol. Kimpembe and Pavard couldn't keep anyone in front of them so he had to cover left, right and center... and did it brilliantly. He made a couple of bad (but not dangerous) passes in the midfield area... but that's not what a CB should be rated on. He did it because Pavard wasn't playing well and he had to take risks to get the ball away.

That is one of the strangest (and there have been strange ones) comments on GL I've heard Laughing

It's like blaming Messi for making a bad pass even though he scores a hat trick Laughing
