Has Messi ever scored a goal in the knockout stage of the world cup?

Where was Messi in 2nd half. As usual, he disappears when needed most. ....don’t cry for Argentina......

This is an appreciation thread Bill, you can bash Argentina in the WC section to which you should.

Mbappe's run in the first half, Di Maria's long-distance shot...This is the sort of magic that people expect from the greatest player of all time.

He had a decent game nonetheless.

He had 2 assists and was Argentina's best player according to the GL bible whoscored.

That being said, not a stellar WC for Messi (2 bad games, 2 good ones), but it felt like often the coach's decisions were meant to keep him off the game.

Yeah but Mbappe was put in a position to succeed, Messi never was but tbf hardly any one on Argentina was.

Basically forwards who are not put in the position to succeed will look bad, no matter how good they are.

That goes for Messi and everyone else. Di Maria shot was amazing but Messi is never allowed that sort of space anyway and tbf Di Maria is much better at long shooting anyway.

"Mbappes run" like Messi hasn't done this before?

But there is a difference. Do you have Messi running at an open midfield/defense on the break like Mbappe or do you have Messi running into two banks of four, already within their defensive third?

And as Mole said, Di Maria was afforded that space. Messi never was.

Mole is correct here. Messi plays an impossible position for Argentina. Stay up front and don't get the ball. Or drop deep and advance the ball, but Messi probably won't have the opportunity to score. We saw that today, he got two assists, but he never really managed to get the ball in a threatening area (aside from that great dribble that he should have finished off).

Amazing how people act as if this isn't a team sport. You have 22 players on the field and people try to boil everything down to what one player did or didn't.

Sure Mbappe's run was amazing but he was only able to do that because France is set up to defend well and find him on the counter, and Argentina is one of the weakest teams on the counter in the tourney.

I should clarify I still do think Messi could have played better today (although I thought he was good) and his WC on the whole was decent, but not great.

And I'm not taking anything away from Mbappe's performance today either, brilliant.

But I agree with Cruijff, we must analyze players performances from the perspective of a team sport, which football is

Pretty solid game, why do people expect him to score 3 goals everyy game if he doesn't get any service? The only goalscoring opportunities he gets are created by himself and no one else in this Argentina team.

The only time football becomes a team sports it's when Messi lose.

Never seen a barca or Messi fan using this logic to tell me that the concept of GOAT doesn't exist because football is a team sports.

But as soon as Messi wins a golden ball ---> GOAT

It's always one thing or the other with you Laughing

This is a team sport which means victory and defeat comes down to teams, not one individual.

Having said that some individuals are better than others and Messi is the best attacker of the modern era without a doubt.

These two statements don't contradict each other lol

I didn't know 11 v 11 was about individuals, good to know though.

I was wrong all along, Football is tennis quite clearly.

You can look at Messi's NT career as Ronaldo's times 3. He did what Ronaldo (once in the world cup) 3 times. Not everyone has an Eder

His world cup was actually decent but obviously for a player like Messi "decent" is still disappointing.
He still got a 7.88 rating overall, that's not too bad.
