'Dark Net'
Have heard the term many a time, but have been a good netizen for quite a few years since I moved to Europe. This kindles my curiosity a fair bit.
What is it?
Is it legal?
Looking for the well informed here.

Re: 'Dark Net'
It's the part of the internet which is not visible unless you use special measures. It provides you with anonymity since it's really difficult to track your location as it uses thousands of relays to divert traffic making it extremely hard to find the originating location which is yours or the site you are on. You are still traceable though since NSA/GCHQ/FBI have unconventional ways. But they won't use it for an average joe. Mostly for high end criminals or organisations.
Legal? yes but it has illegal stuff on it. Quite a lot of it. You can buy fake identities, bitcoins, drugs and pay hackers to hack something. It's also a paedophile heaven. You can find literally anything there which is illegal. Virtual black market. And other nutcases share their extreme political views over there too.
It used to be a lot more active and had 5 times more content back in the days when not a lot knew of it. Now it has too much exposure so the permanent users are all dispersing elsewhere.

Re: 'Dark Net'
How does it work though? Is it like peer-to-peer networks?
How easy is it to access it for a average Joe?
I find the whole thing rather intimidating tbh. This is like reading about Carlo Ventresca dealing with antimatter for the first time or something.

Deep Web is part of the internet that is not indexed, ie: you can't find it on search engines. Its mainly used for stuff like online banking.
If you are interested in these stuff, I suggest you watch the Deep Web documentary.

They are pretty much the same thing. Think classes and objects in C

Think node to node and that node goes through thousands of layers randomising an IP address. This structure is then used by P2P networks. Tor is the biggest one if you have heard of it.
Around 40% of the material is gone in the last 5 years due to the constant effort by hackers and other security companies to try and get rid of the illegal activities. However as always, one thing is replaced by another.
It's not really intimidating. Anyone can download Tor (usage has increased like 20 times due to everyone promoting it as 'secure') to get tor browser which gets you access to the dark web. But you really won't be able to do anything unless you know what to look for. It's also extremely slow making it useless if you are just using it to browse normally.

Re: 'Dark Net'
Nah I get it lol, just like that emoticon.
Anyways you want to stay off of the Dark net lest you find yourself on some dodgy pedophile shit. Half the time I see that area of the internet mentioned it's in relation to some sick child stuff.
Now if you're trying to put together a GOAT crime syndicate and need help on that just PM me on GL and we'll hash out the details. And ain't no law enforcement task force wasting time browsing through my 30k football posts so we're all good.
Plus if you do commit a crime at some point and they find out you've been on that, dat gon' make them real suspicious of you like.
If it happens though, better call saul.

Thanks mate, let me look for that now.
Online banking and paedo sites have something in common. Meditate on this, I must

Re: 'Dark Net'
kinda related since Silk Road (basically Amazon for criminals) had to be accessed by dark net/deep web I think
https://www.wired.com/2015/04/silk-road-1/
if anyone is bored read this entire thing, reads like a tarantino movie, it's amazing.
Anyway I knew someone who purchased drugs via The Dark Net for a while (good quality weed and some LSD to sell for insane profits and recreational use) his dealer eventually got busted though and he stopped but he was telling me about all the crazy stuff you could buy on the various marketplaces there, like RG says I believe you can basically find ANYTHING there. Never tried it myself. Although I came close once when I was looking for a cheap new macbook or iMac

Documentary I mentioned here (Deep Web) is centered around Silk Road. They can make a legit movie out of it.
