When you get a quarter you put it in the piggy bank. The piggy bank is on a shelf in your closet. Your mom knows this and she checks on it every once in a while, so she knows when you put more money in or spend it.
Now one day, you might decide "I don't want mom to look at my money." So you go over to Johnny's house with an extra piggy bank that you're going to keep in his room. You write your name on it and put it in his closet. Johnny's mom is always very busy, so she never has time to check on his piggy bank. So you can keep yours there and it will stay a secret.
Now all the kids in the neighborhood think this is a good idea, and everyone goes to Johnny's house with extra piggy banks. Now Johnny's closet is full of piggy banks from everyone in the neighborhood.
One day, Johnny's mom comes home and sees all the piggy banks. She gets very mad and calls everyone's parents to let them know.
Now not everyone did this for a bad reason. Eric's older brother always steals from his piggy bank, so he just wanted a better hiding spot. Timmy wanted to save up to buy his mom a birthday present without her knowing. Sammy just did it because he thought it was fun. But many kids did do it for a bad reason. Jacob was stealing people's lunch money and didn't want his parents to figure it out. Michael was stealing money from his mom's purse. Fat Bobby's parents put him on a diet, and didn't want them to figure out when he was buying candy.
Now in real life, many very important people were just caught hiding their piggy banks at Johnny's house in Panama. Today their moms all found out. Pretty soon, we'll know more about which of these important people were doing it for bad reasons and which were doing it for good reasons. But almost everyone is in trouble regardless, because it's against the rules to keep secrets no matter what.
RT wrote:Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) has released the biggest leak in journalistic history, posting 11.5 million documents from a Panamanian law firm online and providing “rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows.”
SZ said it received the law firm’s documents a year ago from an anonymous source who “wanted neither financial compensation nor anything else in return.”
The German paper obtained further documents in an investigation that followed, involving “400 journalists from more than 100 media organizations in over 80 countries.”
SZ said it decided to analyze the data in cooperation with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
The data in the so-called Panama Papers, “provides rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows. It proves how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the world’s rich and famous: from politicians, FIFA officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes,” the German newspaper wrote.
The information in the leak covers the activities of the Mossack Fonseca firm over a period from the 1970s to spring 2016.
“The Panama Papers include approximately 11.5 million documents – more than the combined total of the Wikileaks Cablegate, Offshore Leaks, Lux Leaks, and Swiss Leaks,” SZ said.
The data is presented in the form of e-mails, pdf files, photo files, and excerpts from the Panaman firm’s database.
The leak claims to expose the offshore holdings of 12 current and former world leaders and provides data on the financial activities of 128 other politicians and public officials from different countries.

Re: The Panama Papers
What's hilarious is that a lot of papers have been trying to shame putin's friend instead of actual world leaders involved.

Re: The Panama Papers
The sad thing is that none of this is a surprise. It's common knowledge that tax havens exist and are widely used by the wealthy. This just sheds some light on the details, which individuals and organizations have been doing it. I don't know is this going to change anything, tax evasion will continue as long as tax havens exist.
I also find it a little amusing how several Western newspapers and sites are making Putin the main piece of news of all this. He's just one individual among thousands here. It's pretty ridiculous that a media like The Guardian is screaming about Putin on it's front page when they could and should be focusing on the plentiful UK citizens who evade tax that they should be paying to the UK.

Argentina's president is named but he claims he didn't do anything ilegal. It should be stated that just because they have an off shore account that doesn't make it ilegal in most places, the issue is whether it was declared or not.
Also highly suspicious not a single American is in the list.

Re: The Panama Papers
Was also really wondering why there isn't any German dignitaries on the list, though that might be the reason the leak was presented to the SZ.
Having vast riches offshore just seems like something our conservatives would do, like faking a doctorate, or stealing from the poor.

Story leaked yesterday, there wasn't even a breaking news notification on American media outlets until a few hours ago.
Guardian US covered it immediately, but I'm not sure they count
Haven't read much on it yet

Lionel Messi's family denies his involvement in the matter.
"In response to the news released by various media outlets in which Lionel Messi is held responsible for the forming of a company with the aim of 'putting in place a new web of tax fraud', the Messi family wishes to make it clear that Lionel Messi has not carried out any of the actions he is accused of, the accusations of having created a new web of tax fraud and, even, money laundering, are false and libelous."

Iceland PM looks like he's going to face a vote of no confidence as there are large protests in Reykjavik following the emergence of the Panama papers.

More than 1,000 Germans are named in the leaked Panama Papers - and they used all the major German banks says the editor in chief of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. Wolfgang Krach says the banks involved included Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, HypoVereinsbank and Bayerische Landesbank.
The Munich-based paper says it was offered the leaked data from a Panama legal firm more than a year ago through an encrypted channel by an anonymous source.
Mr Krach told the Associated Press that the paper and its partners verified the authenticity of the data by comparing it to public registers, witness testimony and court rulings.

Re: The Panama Papers
The US is very closely tied to Panama as the US got rid of Manuel Noriega, cleaned up all the cartels, financed the rebuilding of the country and then has a treaty to insure the safety of Panama and Panama canal. As such, it's a horrible place for US citizens to use for offshore accounts.
When you set up an offshore account, you're looking for places that don't have treaties with your country of citizenship that would go contrary to your goals with such a setup.

Re: The Panama Papers
Yeah snooping around the internet tells me that US owned off-shore accounts would be likely to find at competitors - remember that Mossack Fonseca is only the 4th largest or so of these entities.

Re: The Panama Papers
Vast majority of Americans don't use offshore accounts to illegally avoid taxation... they are meant to legally avoid taxation. Most people I know who utilize these vehicles have a law firm and a Big 5 accounting firm make sure that everything is completely on the up and up. These set ups are also meant for asset protection since the US is so litigious... if you get sued and lose, you want to make it onerous for the other party to collect against you. A lot of wealthy people protect a portion of their estate this way as well before they enter into marriage... this last one is a bit illegal if in fact you don't report the asset during the divorce if in fact the asset is ultimately owned. But a lot of people do it since it's virtually impossible to be found out.
