Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
Absolutely ludicrous decision. Ivanovic handed an extension on a silver platter after years of abject shittiness yet our captain and the first name on the teamsheet every week is flogged off. The absolute state of this club.

Disgraceful, he won't play for another English club which is a given I suppose.
Maybe MLS?
Maybe MLS?

Chelsea without Terry will be weird...
Like Inter without Zanetti or Milan without Maldini.
Only on a far more pathetic level.

He's 35, it's the right decision by Chelsea. He's still OK, but OK shouldn't be enough for Chelsea.

I'd honestly keep him around.
But it is sad if true.

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
I am aware.
The only reasoning I can put behind this decision is perhaps the clubs sees the upcoming season as the start of a new era, with Zouma and potentially Stones as our starting CB's so Terry was not needed.
But I don't like the decision.

Even if we assume that true, there's no doubt in my mind he'd have been just as happy to stay as an alternate player. He's still the best we have and would have gotten plenty of playing time, and it would have allowed us to retain his experience and leadership in the dressing room as well. It's a bemusing decision.

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
Indeed.
I suppose the other factor is Bran's contract extension. He is younger and going to be our next Captain. I think it must have been a keep one, lose the other, situation.
Maybe another reason is to reduce the wage bill as we won't likely have CL football next season?

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
Our Captain-in-waiting is a player who's stealing a living and can only be assumed to have a sex tape of whatever manager he's currently playing under considering he remains on the teamsheet week after week. Says it all about the state of this club at the moment.
As for potential financial implications, it'll surely cost us more to a.) sign someone good enough to replace JT and b.) pay such a player's wages, than it would be to just keep him on.

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
When Ivanovic can only be replaced by Baba Rahman, or Ola Aina, I can understand why he still starts. Hence why I've been crying out for a RB for 6 months or so.
Fair point, unless we want to roll into next season with Cahill, Zouma, Christensen and Miazga?

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
Miazga is probably who the geniuses at the top see as his replacement
Jokes aside though, the club's inability to find and sign a halfway competent fullback doesn't equate to Ivanovic being good enough to start and good enough to stay. As a back-up maybe, but when we're talking about him being our next captain and thus a regular in the team, we've got a problem.
And lastly, heading into a season with those 4 would be suicide.

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
I think Zouma is Terry's replacement, really.
I'm still 100% in the switch Bran to CB camp.
signing a RB, loaning Baba and bringing back Ake would make me quite happy.
a defence of:
RB:
e.g. Mario Gaspar, Seamus Coleman et al., Ola Aina, Ivanovic, and Azpilicueta
CB:
Cahill Zouma, Ivanovic, Christensen/Miazga/Hector, Ake
LB:
Azpilicueta, Ake
With Ivanovic and Cahill as captain and vice captain respectively. Lots of experience and depth, with some decent back ups, imo.

Re: Chelsea elect TO offer Terry contract extension
He's much better than Naismith ffs.
To add to that RB list, Dani Carvajal, Clyne, De Marcos, Fabinho, or perhaps Cedric from Soton?
Anyway, that team could get on without Terry, imo.
