Watched Hateful 8 yesterday and The Revenant today.

Hateful Eight was amazing  Not a single wasted second. Loved the plot and acting of all the characters. Walton Goggins was GOAT, hope we see him in more big movies from now on.

The Revenant, holy *bleep* shit. Oscar for Best Actor is a no brainer this year. Leo and Tom Hardy just effin killed it. Possibly the most beautifully shot movie I have ever seen. Ffs them feels on DiCaprio's journey. Felt like I was walking in the snow with him. This was Alejandro's masterpiece, better than Birdman.

Started watching Mad Max Fury Road, had to turn it off half way through.

Not gonna watch a drawn out car chase with 0 story/characters.

8.2 rating and thriller listing on IMDB deceived me. hmm

It's understandable the thriller tag deceived MT since he has no idea what a thriller is.

Thriller's definitely my favourite genre. Though there are some movies/tv shows that I didn't really like that were labelled as thrillers.

True Detective (season 1) for example is often called a thriller. My definition of a thriller is something that keeps you on the edge of your seat/is suspenseful and TD doesn't do that. It also has to have a solid story that builds towards a climax. Mad Max has no story whatsoever and there is no build. It's just 99% mindless action.

Max Max has tons of story and a contained plot. I've been through this so many times in these threads. Story is everything the film hints at. There's so much of it, it's up to the viewer to decide.

A thriller to me, is something that borders on horror. It's basically what we in Danish call a gyser. Hitchcock basically invented the genre.

MT you ought to watch some remastered Hitchcock films, those are legit thrillers. Have you watched Finchers thrillers?

Yeh seen social network, bit of seven and gone girl's on my list.

I would class horror as its own genre. The goal is to shock, disgust and scare the audience with gore, blood, zombies, monsters, demons etc. The goal for a thriller on the other hand is suspense.

Suspense is a part of horror. Psychological thrillers are very much horror films in a sense. A lot of people call Psycho a horror film, despite even Hitchcock calling it a thriller and suspense movie.

Kid honestly deserves an oscar nomination (not sure if there is an age limit)

For a kid as young as him, he delivered a 10/10 performance.

Fantastic film overall. My top 5 of 2015 definitely

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

I gave it 3/5 on Netflix.

Fight scenes were excellent as can be expected from Yuen Woo-Ping directing megastars like Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh. Beyond the cursory mentions of Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat's character in the original movie) this doesn't really connect with it in any other way. Not even the sword looks the same.

The Chinese and Hong Kong media don't appear to like it for the above reason as well as the fact that it's in English with Chinese dubs, which makes it more Westernized. I will admit seeing this was a tad strange as I had expected English dubs instead.

None of the characters have a lot of substance unfortunately though. A sign of the film's more westernized approach is reflected in the actors themselves, many of which are Australian or American born/based with Mainland China or Hong Kong roots.

Overall, I consider this a typical sequel in that it lacks the substance and poignancy of the original. Yuen Woo-Ping was never going to be able to replicate what Ang Lee did so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised at that. Completely different directors.

Watched Brooklyn. 8/10. Good movie. Slow at times but very deep if you stick with it. Sort of movie you'd watch with a significant other.

Saoirse Ronan's performance was magnificent.
