Is Schneiderlin a top 3 CM in EPL?

Genuine question i was asking on the chat recently, more importantly after the Saints beat Man Yoo and made Van Gaal look like Moyesie 2.0.

When talking about holding mids, Is Scheiderlin good enough to be considered top 3 in EPL? subsequently, that would make him one of the very best in his position in Europe.

By no means do i watch all of his games, but i do try to watch the ones he plays against the traditional power teams in the league, and he hardly ever looks out of his depth. I guess it was most evident last week vs Man Yoo.

So without appealing to your bias towards your own players, is this a correct assessment to make? Because to me, he gets into Man Yoo, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, spurs etc..., and doesn't look out of order at all. I can't mention Chels because Matic is better.

He's a good defensive midfielder that is growing in influence, but he is not a top 3 CM in the PL.

EDIT: I see you mentioned only holding mids in your actual post. I would say maybe to probably, only Matic off the top of my head is clearly ahead of him.

Let's see what he looks like outside of Southampton first, Lovren looked great there too.

Outside of Matic there isn't many good DMs in the PL anyway. I personally don't rate him that much but we'll see.

Easily...  but that has a lot to do with the lack of CM quality in EPL tbh.  It goes Matic, Yaya and then Schneiderlin right now.

Big reason that Southampton's defense hasn't missed a beat despite changing a ton of players and the coach too (new system to boot) is that Schneiderlin is playing in front of them... noticed it too on NT the few times he played. France's attack suffered some; but then there were absolutely no chances on goal to speak of suddenly.

Since this Lovren fiasco, I'm very reluctant to rate Soton players.

I remember when Schneiderlin was playing for France, I kept thinking how poor his touch was.

Regardless though there aren't that many great CM's in PL so he's in the conversation. But he's not better than Matic or Hendo.

did you say Hendo as in Henderson???   I understand the rest of your post though... but keep in mind that Southampton changed managers who brought a drastically new system AND 3/4 of their back 4. The only guys that remained in the basic defensive shape were Schneiderlin and a defender YET they're just as good as last season.

Henderson is better than Schneiderlin, if that's what you're laughing at.

Also calling the Lovren signing a 'fiasco' after only a few games in one season.

Schneiderlin is as good as Henderson, But he's not better. Both are improving midfielders with potentially high ceilings.

Definitely he is.

A simple statistical analysis shows he's nearly toe-in-toe with Matic in terms of defensive play and he gets goals to boot as well. He's also a real presence and leader in that team.

Only Matic and Fabregas and prime Yaya are better than him in the PL.

Eh, I don't agree. There are some pretty good midfielders in the PL.

I would take Henderson, Matic, Cesc, Toure, Ramsey and Henderson at least over him. Then it depends on whether you consider Di Maria a midfielder or not (since it's his best position).

That said he's definitely a talent and on the rise.

Don't pay attention to El Cujo when it comes to Lovren. He's got some weird thing for him, still thinks he's gonna be great for Liverpool

I don't think anything of Lovren right now. It's far too early to tell, but you guys are writing off a 25 year old defender that was one of the better defenders in the league last season because he's had a few bad games, a few average games, and a few good games for a team that played very poorly in the first part of the season.

Do I think he'll be great? I think he has the tools to be. But it's far too early to determine anything about him yet which is what I was commenting on.

But then again to you after one bad game everyone is a fraud, and after declaring him the next coming you want Rodgers out too so I'm not concerned about your knee-jerk reactions to our players or management.

Yea top 3 CM is Matic, Cesc and Yaya. He's one tier below with Ramsey, Rooney, Henderson and Mikel

No he definitely plays central. They have Silva, Nasri, Navas and even Jovetic and Milner playing ahead of him.

Mikel and Rooney made me scratch my head, but Henderson is better than Schneiderlin.

Defining top three CMs is quite hard. I think the following have been the best CMs this season:

Matic
Fabregas
Jedinak
Henderson
Toure
Fernandinho
Rooney
Colback
Fer
Wanyama
Schneiderlin
Kouyate
Song

If I had to pick the top-3 out of those, Matic and Fabregas would make it, but I'm not really finding a clear 3rd choice. Maybe Rooney, but he's playing higher up than most others on that list.

He's been better than half the players mentioned in these thread.

Take Art's list for example, only ones better are Fernandinho, Toure, Matic and Fabregas.

Oh and the difference between CM and DM should be established, Schneiderlin is a DM and one of the few serviceable ones in the league although I still consider him overrated there just is hardly any talent at that position.

As a CM there are many who are better.

Mikel has been benched simply because Cesc and Matic are excellent, that doesn't mean that he's not one of the best midfielders in the country. He would start comfortably for at least three quarters of PL teams.

Fer and Sissoko are good shouts. I wouldn't say they've been better than Schneiderlin though.

Though yes there's a difference between CM and DM I usually group them together in comparisons while grouping AMs with wingers and strikers.
