Re: zidane overrated or not?
sportsczy wrote:@titosantill... you're wasting your time. It's the same thing as someone digging up all of Maradona's bad games and then saying that Laudrup was better. You can't argue with this stuff.
Just take solace that one of the few people who actually saw a huge amount of football in the past 30+ years (me) agrees with most of what you say.
I remember that i had to defend Zico's and Platini's greatness in the early 2000s when people rated Baggio and Bergkamp as better... then people started rating every good striker of the moment better than Van Basten. It's just how it is.
Good players are fine and all... but great ones are rare and universally known. Doesn't matter what nonsense people might say... and most importantly, this discussion is beneath you tbh.
unlike that person,i try to bring the review for EVERY zidane matches, that is more fair

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 14]
22 December, 1996
Juventus 1-1 Piacenza
Stadio Leonardo Garilli: 13,010 spectators
Referee: Racalbuto
Juve draw for the 5th time this season. Tacchinardi's red card in the 75' swayed the match in Piacenza's favour, who scored a late equaliser to salvage 1 point.
Piacenza marked Juve's forwards [Boksic, Del Piero] very tightly with two defenders [Polonia, Conte]. Juve were so dominant half-way through the match; their central defenders [Montero, Ferrara] were playing so high up the pitch they were at the half-way line. The loss of Deschamps due to suspension was noted for its negative impact on Juve's midfield. Piacenza hit the post in the second half, prior to their goal.
Zidane was described as "trotting like the horse of Camargue". I have absolutely no idea what that means. However, Zidane played a free kick in at the 58' which was headed in by Padovano. According to the match report, it was an own goal from Lucci of Piacenza, who directed the ball into his goal. Zidane was not involved in any of the other key moments.
Zidane's individual rating notes his part in the goal, but also states "does not affect anything about the game".
RATINGS
Peruzzi [6]; Torricelli [5] - Ferrara [6.5] - Montero [7] - Dimas [5]; Di Livio [6] - Zidane [5.5] - Tacchinardi [4.5] - Jugovic [6]; Boksic [5.5] - Del Piero [5]
Substitutes: Padovano [7], Pessotto [n/a], Lombardo [n/a]

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 15]
5 January, 1997
Parma 1-0 Juventus
Il Tardini: 6,987 spectators
Referee: Ceccarini
Juve lost their second match of the season, by a Chiesa goal in the second minute. After that, it was a "bloodbath", as per the report. Four red cards: Melli, Chiesa, Torricelli, Zidane. Torricelli was sent off for two yellow cards, Melli was sent off for a violent kick on Deschamps, Chiesa was sent off for pulling down Zidane, Zidane was sent off for hitting Chiesa in the face.
Zidane was the best Juve player in the first half [a weak half overall], but was sent off simply due to his own temper and stupidity. His second red card of the season, so he would miss the next two matches: Atalanta and Lazio.
RATINGS

1996-97 Serie A [Round 18]
26 January, 1997
Juventus 3-1 Reggiana
Stadio delle Alpi: 2,433 spectators
Referee: Bolognino
Juve win comfortably; up two goals by the 30', and a late consolation goal from Reggiana did not spoil the party. Goals from Padovano [Jugovic assist], Jugovic [Padovano assist], and Tacchinardi [n/a] were on display.
Zidane was the worst Juve player on the pitch. He was expected to perform better coming from his two-match suspension. Instead, his individual rating began with "ouch, ouch." Zidane's replacement, Lombardo, was seen to be a more lively participant in the match.
Again, Peruzzi was not given a rating. It seems odd that this has happened multiple times already, and is certain to continue.

1996-97 Serie A [Round 19]
2 February, 1997
Cagliari 0-0 Juventus
Stadio Sant'Elia: 21,169 spectators
Referee: Boggi
Dull match, quite simply. As the report states, "the Cagliari wall stops Juventus". A 34' red card for Montero made the task more difficult for Juve, who could not pull off the win. They controlled the match completely, but could not get a single shot on target.
Zidane was good. He dictated the tempo of the match, and his presence was clear. However, he had a clear chance to score in the 43', but wasted it. Juve's forwards were poor yet again. Zidane's individual rating described him as "not the best, but not the worst". It is noted that his touches of the ball were excellent.
Del Piero's individual rating was very damning, mocking of any chances of him winning the Ballon d'Or in the future.

Juventus 2-1 Perugia

You couldn't make it up. Last match, Del Piero was harshly criticised for his performance. This week, he was the star, and his second goal drew comparison to Maradona! :ROFLMAO:
Zidane played a very minor part in this match. His individual performance was described as "blurry", and he received the joint-lowest mark for this match. There was one scene in which Zidane played a major role in: at the 21', Zidane played a good cross to Jugovic who headed it over the bar. Apart from that, there was nothing of major significance in Zidane's performance.
After the match, Lippi considered returning to the trident formation: the 4-3-1-2. Something worth keeping in mind when I compile the next reports. Lippi also called Antonio Conte the best midfielder in the world.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 21]
23 February, 1997
Fiorentina 1-1 Juventus
Stadio Artemio Franchi: 6,817 spectators
Referee: Bazzoli
A very late goal from Fiorentina turned 3 points into 1 point for Juve. Crucial points at this stage, specially because Juve were only 5 points ahead of Sampdoria at the time.
It was a very fast-paced match, with many duels in the middle of the pitch and little action for the goalkeepers. The likes of Jugovic, Deschamps, and Di Livio were praised for their energy and commitment in the match. Del Piero scored his 8th goal of the season, equaling the most he ever scored in his young career. Fiorentina had a player sent off in the 56'.
Zidane had a difficult match. He was criticised very heavily: the report said Lippi was "stupid" not to substitute Zidane for Tacchinardi [a more defensive midfielder] later in the match. Zidane was unable to match the tempo of the match, and his presence diminished as the match went on. With Pessotto, the worst players on the team.
Zidane picked up a yellow card in the match, his sixth of the season. He's also had two red cards [one for two yellows, one straight red] after 18 matches; a horrendous disciplinary record.
As a side note, the performance by Jugovic was described as arguably the best of his Juve career. He made the assist for Del Piero's goal, amongst other scenes. Interesting bit of information, I thought.

1996-97 Serie A [Round 23]
9 March, 1997
Inter Milan 0-0 Juventus
San Siro: 42,612 spectators
Referee: Collina
the pre match:
Another massive game. Everyone loves the Derby d'Italia! Some pre-match comments:
Deschamps on Zidane-Djorkaeff: "It's easy to stand out in France, but in Italy you will see who the real champion is."
Zidane on different styles: "I prefer to pass the ball, Djorkaeff prefers to shoot. That's my style even if it makes me look less than what I actually am."
Djorkaeff's response to Zidane: "I, selfish? Nonsense."
Lippi on Zidane's style: "It is a flaw to be too selfless. Zizou can shoot more, we need his goals."
Zidane on his form: "January and February were difficult months, now I am better."
Hodgson on Inter's scudetto hopes: "We still have this dream, so we will try not to destroy it."
Moratti on Juve's 'relationship' with referees: "It is impossible to win when the opposition has 12 on their side."
Who will win the duel? We will see...
___________________________________________________________________________________
Controversy in Milan. Maurizio Ganz scores a goal which is very likely to be offside. But, the assistant referee does not raise his flag. Collina, the head referee, signals the goal. However, the assistant referee changes his mind. He says it was offside after the goal was allowed. The ruling changed. The goal was taken away. Ganz was 260 centimetres offside.
Collina's assistant thought it was a back-header by Montero, so he did not flag offside. Collina saw that it was from Zamorano.
Moratti: "In 45 years of football I have never seen such a thing. He has invented a new rule. The goal was signaled and it is inconceivable that it has been canceled due to the protests of the opponents."
This scene was a major talking point in Italian football media. It is now regarded as one of the more famous "scandals" of the Derby d'Italia.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Okay, away from the controversy. Zidane played a decent match overall. Lippi wanted him to be more aggressive on the pitch, and Zidane responded. He created a couple of chances, but was not able to be decisive.
However, Djorkaeff was better. Djorkaeff was described as a "snake"; whereas Zidane was good in the first half and dropped off in the second, Djorkaeff was good in the first and was even better in the second half.
Boksic, coming back from a two-month injury, was sent off late in the match.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 24]
16 March, 1997
Juventus 3-0 Roma
Stadio delle Alpi: 10,558 spectators
Referee: Cesaro
Vieri redeems himself. After a heated argument with Lippi in mid-January, most people expected Vieri to leave Juve. But he stayed, and just like in the quarter-final first-leg against Rosenborg, Vieri made the difference again today. 2 goals, and he hit the post.
Juve were by far the better team, creating seven (!) scoring chances. Roma did not even test Juve once: Peruzzi's individual rating claimed that it would be an insult to his talent to rate him on his "performance" in goal. Juve's attack partnership worked perfectly on the day: "Vieri providing substance, Amoruso providing elegance".
Zidane was playing like a real trequartista: his playmaking was praised, and he played in front of an uninspiring midfield of Di Livio-Deschamps-Tacchinardi. Zidane was not involved in any of the goals, but he offered an "inspired effort" in midfield, but he was not a stand-out. He hit the post on a free kick in the match.
Jugovic was a substitute late in the match and did nothing but earn a stupid yellow card. He is now suspended for the next match.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 25]
23 March, 1997
Napoli 1-1 Juventus
San Paolo: 43,711 spectators
Referee: Pellegrino
It was a relatively even match until Paolo Montero was red-carded in the 38'. After that, it was the "Angelo Peruzzi show", as Juve's goalkeeper made several stops and was decisive in a hard-earned point for Juve. Peruzzi played so well that his performance was described as "miraculous", and Peruzzi was described as an "angel".
Peruzzi had an unbelievable save in the 94', showing incredible reactions. Napoli had many, many goal-scoring chances but they were just so wasteful. On another day they might have scored 3 or 4 goals. A very disappointing draw on their part.
Zidane had a good performance. In the first half, he was very good; however, in the second half his performance was average. Zidane hit the post from outside of the box with his left foot after a nice play
(see min 0:59)
and he created a couple of minor chances. In the second half, he was absent.
Juve have hit the post 21 times over 25 rounds. I don't know of any current-day comparisons but that seems like an incredible tally.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
So... based on what you're saying, we should use "whoscored" as the absolute rating system for today's players too
You're not watching every game. You're using "La Gazetta" as the rating source... the notoriously eratic and, frankly, crap source.
You do realize that they had Candela as the second best defender in Serie A ahead of players like Maldini (10th according to them), Nesta (18th) and Costacurta (19th). Heck, they had Boghossian as the 2nd highest rated midfielder... and Zidane 29th
This is garbage, pure and simple. The highlights are cool to watch though. Thanks for that at least.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
Sportzcy, answer this question. When did Zidane ever dominate through a season putting in 9/10 performances almost weekly like ronaldinho in 2005-06 or messi in 2010-12? When could you clearly say e is by far the most dominant player in this league? Certainly not at Juve where del piero was the talisman, and the likes of rui costa, boban, and totti were regarded as comparable(and I've followed juve since 97-98 so dont try pulling that card. have you?). Also at rm i remember watching him in his first season at real and being underwhelmed much of the time...some flashes of brilliance but hardly dominating whole matches. Certainly there where some matches he was the best on the pitch but you can say that about any great player....for me he is a great but the ultimate example of how a good wc can blow up your rep.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
Only strikers can put up 9/10 ratings based on the current rating systems since they're all statistical and highly skewed towards goals and direct assists... you could play like crap and score a goal = guaranteed 8. If you get more than a goal it's a guaranteed 9. On the other hand, you could be a dominant CM and not reach an 8.
The perfect examples are Kroos and Matic. They've both been outstanding so far this season. Their season ratings? 7,46 for Kroos and 7,66 for Matic according to whoscored... so if a striker happens to play in a very high scoring league, he is going to have a MASSIVE advantage.
Also, if you look at those Serie A ratings who are based on god know what... nobody ever gets an 8 even lol. It's all between 4-7.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
I looked at your thread on the other site... of the Juve players, I don't think i saw an 8 at all tbh. Maybe on the other teams. But then again, how does that make sense? In the 5 years Zidane was at Juve, they won Serie A 2 times and finished 2nd twice (which in the Serie A of the 90s and early 00s was HUGE; by far the toughest league ever). He won 1 BdO and was on the podium 2 other times too.
At least i understand the whoscored rating system, although i disagree with the formula. With the Italian media (like most everything in Italy tbh), you have no idea what the methodology is lol.

1996-97 Serie A [Round 26]
6 April, 1997
AC Milan 1-6 Juventus
San Siro: 35,815 spectators
Referee: Braschi
Quite simply, Sacchi's worst ever defeat. His team was out-played, he was out-coached, and Milan had no answer to the ruthless visitors on the day. Even more amazing was the fact that Juve did not have the likes of Del Piero, Conte, Deschamps, and Montero in the match.
As Lippi said after the match: "We are as ruthless as Capello's Milan". An outstanding display from every Juve player, from goalkeeper to forward.
Zidane was ever-present in the match. He only had 1 goal, a penalty to make it 2-0. It was almost saved by Rossi. In a friendly at the beginning of the season, Zidane saw himself being dominated by Desailly in midfield. However, on this day, Zidane "made Desailly suffer". Zidane's individual rating claimed that his performance "transcended the goal he scored". A very good display from the Frenchman.
Individual Zidane highlights:

1996-97 Serie A [Round 27]
13 April, 1997
Juventus 0-3 Udinese
Stadio delle Alpi: 6,177 spectators
Referee: Bettin
Truly a shock result, especially after the previous round. Juve had been unbeaten for 11 consecutive rounds, conceding only 3 goals in the last 11 matches. But in this match alone, they conceded 3. Amazingly, Juve had two penalties in the second half. Vieri missed his, Zidane's was saved. Udinese were down to 10-men as early as the 2nd minute, yet they still won!
Zidane was very bad. Apart from his penalty miss, his touches were very inconsistent, and he was not able to do anything of significance. Juve had the numerical advantage, but "did nothing with the ball". As the primary playmaker, this is simply unacceptable from Zidane.
Tacchinardi was red-carded in the second half for a harsh foul. Bierhoff and Amoroso were the stars for Udinese on the day.
RATINGS

1996-97 Serie A [Round 28]
20 April, 1997
Bologna 0-1 Juventus
Stadio Dall'ara: 17,989 spectators
Referee: Ceccarrini
A tough win for Juve, but poorly refereed by Ceccarrini. He let many things go, and should have awarded a penalty for Bologna. He also should have sent off Bologna's goalkeeper for a foul on Boksic.
Boksic scored in the 40' to make it 1-0. It was the first match he scored in for a couple of months, if I recall correctly. Immediately after the match, Zidane praised Boksic, claiming that Juve's attack was faster and more effective when Boksic was playing.
Zidane played a very average match. His individual description remarked on that, saying he did not do much for Juve on the day. However he did some dirty work defensively to try and compensate. Although to be fair, looking at the individual descriptions and ratings for quite a few players on both teams, it was a very average match overall.
Peruzzi did some very good saves to maintain the victory. He regularly has these outstanding performances for this team; something I personally never noticed when I used to watch Juve when I was younger.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 29]
May 4, 1997
Juventus 0-0 Sampdoria
Stadio delle Alpi: 14,053 spectators
Referee: Messina
A poor match for Zidane, who was suffering from a toothache. Lippi had him taken to the dentist a day before the match. Zidane tried to do too much by himself -- described as "individualistic" by La Stampa after the match. Inconsistent touches, he had the desire to play for the audience and it was only towards the end of the match where he became "more concrete and focused".
In the 70th minute, Zidane and Amoruso made a play for Vieri who scored a header, who was wrongly called offside by the linesman. At first I assumed it was just a pro-Juventus bias from La Stampa, but La Gazzetta confirmed that it was a wrong decision and the goal should have stood. But this does not conceal a poor performance overall from the Frenchman.

Re: zidane overrated or not?
1996-97 Serie A [Round 30]
May 11, 1997
Verona 0-2 Juventus
Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi: 28,863 spectators
Referee: Treossi
Another weak performance from Zidane. Verona man-marked many of Juventus' players, but the player who suffered the most was Zidane. As La Stampa says, "the pressure of Verona embarrassed Zidane", who was found out of position and too far advanced several times.
Zidane played a part in Juventus' first goal, playing the corner which Jugovic deflected to Ferrara, who scored the opening goal. La Stampa gave a very short explanation for Zidane's poor rating -- "nothing special, tired" -- and he was rated as Juventus' worst player on the pitch. Yikes.
