Felipe Santana- 2 m
Schmelzer - 0 m
Blaszczykowski -3.7 m
Kagawa - 2.5 m
Gundogan -6.5 m
Gotze - 0 m
Lewandowski -4.5 m
Sebastian Kehl -3.2 m
Kevin Großkreutz -1.2 m
Sven Bender - 1.2 m
If i'm not mistaken with my mental calculus we get a shocking amount of 31.3 millions squad, for the Bundesliga winners in that season and future Cl finalists ...
I don't think think this is even comparable with Wigan or other small budget success recently...
Where is Reus? He is a Dortmund youth product but they bought him back for 17 million...

It's the 2011/12 squad that won the league... They bought Reus after that season, but they also sold Kagawa that summer for a higher price.

Man Utd have spent a lot under Ferguson.I could've sworn i saw a graphic where Utd's expenditure in the past years equal's that of City's.
Plus Utd operate(d) on a high wage bill anyways.
They spent alot but the recent Chelsea and City always outspent him. Ferguson managed to do alot with his admitedly expensive squad, he got pretty lucky sometimes on finding amazing players here and there, but of course he always took promise and talent and led them to glory.
Also, i wouldn´t look too much into good CL runs, unless they become consistent. Going deep into the Champions League can be just a sheer roll of the dice many times.
How did they 'overachieve' though ?
Man City had to build from scratch,Chelsea needed heavy investments for a title push. Some context is needed here.Man United already had a solid core of players and thus needed 2-3 quality signings like each year to continue maintaining their level.
Just because a club like City has spent the money poorly that doesnt equate to United overachieving. And its been only like what ,3 seasons since City are into the title frame.
Not discrediting SAF though. He has shown that stability of the club is also a factor in success. Also regarding the 'gems', i think you must be referring to the ones he brought from Portugal namely Nani,CR etc and they did pay a lot to acquire those talents.
I feel like some part of this reaction is due to the cluelessness shown by Moyes.I dont even think United have a bad squad but they have a manager who's truly out of his depth.

Agree.Art Morte wrote:You probably find the best low budget success stories from smaller leagues.
Also, clubs like Swansea, who win promotion from the second level to the top level, when there's a big gap in revenue between those divisions like there is between the Championship and the Premier League, and then comfortably stay up in their first season in the big league, achievements like these are pretty great. And they won the League Cup last year, too. Although an even greater achievement was probably that of Bradford's, being the runners-up.
Swansea's story has always been one of the more amazing ones to me.
To think a few years ago they were dwelling around in League 2.
Their rise has just been so sudden and to add to it they play football with the right mentality (beautiful, entertaining stuff).

Re: success through low budget
Spend 5 times as much a year as any other clubs on youth academy only to sell the most promising one as well as being forced to take a out a loan to pay wages despite having one of the highest revenues in football, not exactly low budget material.Fußball wrote:Barca CL victory 2011.

Re: success through low budget
i think boca juniors should be in the list considering they won several trophies & managed to go to the final of certain cup in the last decade till now, despite not so high budget compare to other argentina club:
1) intercontinetal cup (2003, 2000) (2 times champion) (1 time finalist - 2007)
2) copa libertadores (2007, 2003, 2001, 2000) (4 times champion) (1 time finalist - 2012)
3) copa sudamericana (2004, 2005) (2 times champion)
4) recopa sudamericana (2005, 2006, 2008) (3 times champion)
5) argentina league (2011, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2000) (6 times champion)
6) copa argentina (2012) (1 time champion)

Re: success through low budget
were getting far too technical.
we already agreed though Barca and most other big clubs don't fall under the low budget area.
Dortmund though is the clear choice.
