Talks between Manchester United and Chelsea over the transfer of Juan Mata are going well, Sky Sports understands.

Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says all parties, including Mata, want the deal to happen.

And Balague revealed on Revista de La Liga: "Manchester United and Chelsea are negotiating the future of Juan Mata - and the idea is that Mata, who Chelsea are happy to let go, goes to Old Trafford in this transfer window.

"Chelsea are asking for £32 million or with Wayne Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no to Rooney - but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have questioned whether Juan Mata is the right player for Manchester United at this current time.

"Manchester United need quality, Mata needs to get out of the situation he is in, and it would reinforce United for their meetings with (Chelsea's title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from Jose Mourinho."

Sky sources reported that talks between the two rivals are "progressing well' which came after we learnt that Chelsea wanted in excess of £35million for the diminutive midfielder.

United officials have remained in London over the last two days to conduct negotiations for Mata and one other "European-based central midfielder" -- believed to be Juventus' Arturo Vidal, according to ESPN.

United feel a significant wage increase can entice Vidal to the club -- either now or in the summer. Although the Chilean midfielder is hugely happy at Juventus, and turned down Bayern Munich for the Italian champions, initial negotiations were encouraging for United.

The fact that Vidal is also on relatively low wages for a player at a big European club, and that Juve are maintaining a comparatively prudent approach to transfers, means United feel they have some leverage.

The English champions are also keeping tabs on Vidal's teammate Claudio Marchisio, and have renewed interest in Roma's Miralem Pjanic, Atletico Madrid's Koke as well as Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye.

The range of targets reflect what has been a frustrating period in the market for Moyes, with United said to have scouted up to 40 players over the past few months.

Vidals new contract made him the 2nd highest earner in Italy I believe

He's not on Ibra oil money, but he's not on low wages at all.

I'm sure Moyes has plenty of leverage

Yo Vidal m8, come play with Tom Clevz, cover for our 40 year old defenders and we'll make sure you get dat coveted top 6 trophy.

Mata is better than Koke ever will be. Rather get him.

Not like you need Costa. You do need Felipe but much easier to buy Coentrao/Baines.

Coenttrao and Mata > Costa and Luis

Besides, we don't have any need for Costa when we're signing Cavani

This Mata thing is really heating up huh..I honestly don't see it, but maybe I am giving Chelsea too much credit in the common sense department..

yes I understand Mata is a superior player, but Koke is a player in a position of need.

and ya Costa is completely unnecessary, why wouldn't Atletico just offer him to Chelsea for Mata?.....they need him more then we do

Why do United even want Mata right now?

No denying he's a great player. But Rooney is their most important player right now, and for Mata to play in his ideal position, Rooney would have to be moved.

I understand if it's a swap deal. But even then, United are making a change in their strongest position before addressing the 1,000 other weaknesses in the squad.

------------------------DDG------------------
--Scrub-----Scrub-------------Scrub-----Scrub
-------------Scrub---------Carrick--------------
Januzaj------------Rooney----------------Scrub
--------------------RVP (Injured) / Scrub--------

So, they get rid of Rooney, bring in Mata. And they still have an equal amount of scrubs. Makes no sense.

They need Mata because he is 10 times the player Young, Nani or Valencia are. Not to mention he is better than Januzaj and Kagawa too.

They will play him at LW or RW essentially. If RVP goes then behind Rooney.

rooney won't be swapped mata would play out wide like kagawa has been forced to, but Mata has actually shown an ability to play out there unlike Kagawa who goes missing when he's not #10

Manchester City are tracking highly-rated Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

City have sent scouting delegations to a handful of Sevilla games towards the end of last year and over the past fortnight, with sporting director Txiki Begiristain and manager Manuel Pellegrini both big fans of the full-back.

Real Madrid also want him once Coentrao is out of the picture.

I just think, when you need half a new team... you shouldn't be buying quality players and then playing them out of position before you address the serious flaws that are already there

Mata is useless on the wings. It would be ok if we were talking about how arsenal play, with cazorla for example. but United need actual wingers on their flanks
