Report: Vermaelen to leave this summer

Posted by: Arseblog News
Thomas Vermaelen has informed Arsene Wenger of his desire to leave Arsenal this summer, according to a report in Belgian publication La Dernière Heure.

Claiming to have spoken to the Belgian international’s representatives, Sports Entertainment Group, the newspaper says that Manchester United made a tentative approach for the centre-back in January but that the player’s current injury problems and a lack of cover at the Emirates scuppered any possibility of a move.

As has been well-documented Vermaelen has cut a frustrated figure this season spending most of the last twelve months on the bench as back up to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The 28-year-old has previously been linked to Napoli and Zenit St Petersburg and will likely have a number of suitors come the summer especially if he gets minutes in the World Cup.

Given Bacary Sagna, Wenger’s de facto fourth choice centre-back, is stalling on a new deal it looks as though defensive reinforcements will be top of the list this summer for the Gunners.

should Force Napoli to overpay for him Twisted Evil

Cheers to all those who voted (didn't even see the thread for this initially!)

As RG said, this section is incredible, easily could be any other combination of three.

An honor to be nominated, and well deserved, Jay, the voice of reason

People commending him for apologizing is hilarious. Man up and apologize to your wife, you don't have to have it reflect on Arsenal by blowing up Twitter with it. Yes, it was at a team hotel but do the fans have to be in on this? That's a problem with him and his wife and with him and Wenger.

Also, two hours before a crucial FA Cup match, really man? Mad

so that tabloid stuff was true after all?

That's terrible. Especially seeing that it happened the night before the Liverpool game?!

Goes to show if people don't have enough competition they get ideas.

Happened before Crystal Palace, Feb 2nd.

What I think is worse is that this model sold the story to the Sun to make a buck. Giroud made a big mistake, yes, but this model just interfered with his family life in order to get paid.

ah ok so they just timed the publication at the day of the Liverpool game. These *bleep* assholes.

Anyway, it's unprofessional behaviour (not because of his private life, that#s his business, but because of the game preparation), which should lead to him being dropped at least for a couple of games IF you had someone competing for his place.

It's his personal life and he drag his manager, team mates and fans into his apology and through twitter no less. Could call his wife and sort it out privately like Wenger did back then.

Love is cursed by monogamy... hmm

On a serious note though (don't know why I'm taking everything lightly tonight) that is like sooooo wrong! Seriously! At the team hotel??? You're a pro footballer at a massive team with media spotlight on you every day of the week and you are married with a baby on the way, and you do that!!! At the team hotel???

Btw, it wasn't the press who timed it, Giroud apologized on Twitter today. No one knew it was for sure until he did.

I still can't shake this feeling that even if you represent an organization, this should be between you and your spouse, maximum between you and your manager as well but it is something that he apologized.

Quite a few footballers didn't do similarly... *Cough* Rooney, Terry *Cough*

Why he would send this twitter stuff today is really strange, but I meant the Sun had timed the publication around the 5-1 game, no?
He could maybe just have kept quiet about it publicly, let the headlines fade away..

But I can't shake the feeling he wouldn't dare this stuff if he knew his place as a starter was in danger, you know what I mean?

I must say I thought it was really strange already when in the winter window he said publicly "I would rather not see a new striker come in." (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11670/9094422/transfer-news-olivier-giroud-tells-arsenal-they-dont-need-another-striker)

I feel that this is completely out of place for him to say, just as the stuff last week with him saying he tried to get Loris to join you. WTF? You've got a goalkeeper right now...

It does seem a bit bizarre, I was wondering why we'd heard so much from Giroud over the last two weeks, especially the Lloris thing. Made no sense, really.

Giroud is a moron. While lt is to an extent a personal matter, personal matters effect your play and it seems football isn't the first thing on his mind and his head isn't always in the game. Doubt anyone can focus or have confidence/belief in themselves when you betrayed your wife and children like a total scumbag. A lot of that would explain his constant choking and horrible finish, honestly... Only way you could get over that without a hitch is if you didn't care/don't have a conscience

l facepalmed a lot because of his poor play, but l didn't hate him as a player because l felt like he was trying his best and wanted him to succeed.

Now l feel like l genuinely dislike him.
