Re: Official: Manchester United sign Juan Mata
As amusing as all the GIFs and Moyes bashing is, I think there are serious questions to be asked surrounding this move.
Mata is a serious player. Whether he’s truly “world class” or not is up for debate, but he’s certainly an elite player for both club and country. He’s the sort of player that Moyes could build his side around. However, the £37m question is, will he?
If you were to base your prediction on Moyes’ tactical history, you’d almost have to say no.
Moyes has a history of playing 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 while at Everton. 4-4-2 obviously isn’t a formation that traditionally accommodates a pure creator, such as Mata. While the 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 most definitely can, Moyes has a history of shunning that approach. Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini were the most recent players to regularly take up the CAM position for Everton. Both players used their physicality and aerial prowess to provide an outlet for the defense and a target in the box. Neither was particularly adept at orchestrating attacks or controlling a game in midfield.
Instead, Moyes has usually opted to force his more creative players out wide. Steven Pienaar and Royston Drenthe are two such examples. If you think they are poor examples, I wouldn’t argue. They’re simply the most creative player on rather straightforward squads. Moyes simply hasn’t bought many pure creators in his managerial tenure. The best examples have been in his use of Januzaj and Kagawa this season. Both have spent the majority of their time playing wide (usually on their weaker foot), with Moyes preferring to play two strikers in front of them. Therefore, the safe money is on Mata being slotted into the RM/RAM position opposite Januzaj.
The question then becomes, can Mata be United’s saving grace when playing on the wing? That’s a much more difficult question to answer. As previously mentioned, Mata has the quality to boost United’s campaign, but just how much and especially how much from a wide position are legitimate questions. I personally think his effect will be limited, as another dedicated attacker doesn’t fix United’s problems this season.
In my personal opinion, Mata is more of a statement buy than a bit of strategic genius. There’s certainly a place for such a move, and you could even argue that now is precisely the time that United needed such a buy. However, that will be of little consolation if they fail to make the top 4 come the end of the season. Strikers and attackers are the sexy move, but a little bit of solidity in defense and midfield might’ve gone much further toward aiding their cause.

Re: Official: Manchester United sign Juan Mata
Mata so elite riding the bench for Spain?
How about that confederations cup final? Where he was moving around like he was older than Xavi.
Whoever knows where Luiz Gustavo is tell him to let Mata out of his pocket so we can see the little Spaniard again.
He's Charlie Adam with a better supporting cast.

Re: Official: Manchester United sign Juan Mata
Mata will play inside left, more of his Valencia days than Chelsea. It stretches the play freeing up jacuzzi on the right. Simple really. If we played tomorrow with Rooney fit, he'd be the tip with kagawa, jacuzzi and mata interchanging behind him. Rvp fit you remove kagawa.
Moyes has always played with inside widemen, it's the style sir Alex plays in big games and suits us to the ground

Re: Official: Manchester United sign Juan Mata
Mata's best seasons have all come at #10 or as an SS. Stop pretending otherwise.
He can do a job out wide but he's only truly World Class playing in the hole.

Re: Official: Manchester United sign Juan Mata
Yeah, he was shit at Valencia huh?
Everybody and their mother wants to play ss these days, but from zidane to deco to ronaldinho to messi even Henry started out wide rather than straight therough the middle, the free role has suited them just fine.
Well use him better than Chelsea, and he'll be better for us than for chelsea

He will most likely battle out with Kagawa as who can serve as the best lapdog for Moyes.
