Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
It looks like the news regarding Cagliari takeover is true.
Apparently an emissary of Qatar Foundation was in 'Costa Smeralda' for business directly related to the negotiation for the acquisition of a majority stake in Cagliari and he said 'we are waiting'.
Seems like only Cellino's approval is what is needed here.
LINK
This article also says there's a consortium of American entrepreneurs ready to invest in Cagliari. Its either between them or Qatar foundation if you believe this article.

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
DC United sold for Inter ?
A report today suggests Erick Thohir is considering selling DC United, in a bid to cover current debt levels at Inter.
The Indonesian is believed to have paid €75m alongside Rosan Roeslani and Handy Soetedjoto take 70 per cent shares in the Nerazzurri in October, and to take on around €200m in debts.
Il Sole 24 ore report today that as he continues the process of transferring that debt from banks in Italy to banks in Indonesia, the Inter President is considering offloading DC United from his portfolio.
Thohir, who also owns Indonesian football club Persib Bandung and part-owns NBA franchise the Philadelphia 76ers and can count on a personal fortune of €300m, has held joint majority-ownership in MLS side DC United since July 2012.
However, it is believed that in approaching his plans for the Nerazzurri, Thohir intends to aid his personal guarantee on their debts by selling his share in DC United.
Meanwhile, Michael Williamson is expected to arrive this month in Milan to assume the role of chief of financial operations with Inter and oversee Thohir’s planned structural reorganisation of the San Siro giants.
Williamson has previously worked for DC United in the same capacity as CFO.

Why are two different parties fighting over Cagliarli when there's God knows how many other cheap, small teams who are in a better position in regards to their stadium, financially etc.

Cellino: Cagliari practically sold
“22 years dreaming the impossible dream,” Cellino’s SMS read. “I am a poor romantic, I am sorry if I haven’t succeeded in my aims.
“I have practically sold Cagliari, the formalities will be completed tomorrow when the lawyers of the buyers provide assurances to the league’s governing bodies. They are good people.”
The identity of the owners is still unclear, with Corriere dello Sport reporting that it is likely to be one of either the Qatar Foundation or an American organisation who specialise in stadium construction.

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
Another Qatari owner? Another PSG perhaps? Does anyone know Al-Thani's aims with Cagliari?
Al-Thani is the surname of the ruling family of Qatar, so these guys could be loaded (This is pure conjecture though, so take it with a pinch of salt).

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
Don't think that they are aiming to turn the club into PSG's underling. The Al-Thani's interest in European clubs has been known for a while, they have inquired about United and Milan in the past IIRC. But the buyout of Cagliari is weird compared to their previous interests lol.
Of course, this is just speculation. They very well may become a feeder club to PSG as Surag suggested

If they are serious about creating a super power they would at least choose a club with a bigger fan base / bigger city / some name recognition outside Italy. But you never know, these people have too much money to care how its gonna be spent.

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
There's one thing that can play to their advantage(if they spend big that is) and thats the limited financial power of the rest of the Serie A.Even the big Italian clubs cant afford to spend big without selling their stars these days.Plus the TV deal isnt as ridiculous as La Liga with even bottom clubs earning a fair bit so that would help i suppose if they are serious about building a major product.
Also, isnt this Al-Thani the same guy who owns Malaga too ? I actually wouldnt be surprised if a Malaga-esque situation transpires in this case too tbh lol.

Al Thani is the royal family in Qatar, there are plenty of Al Thanis and all of them are in the billionaire side of the scale. It might as well be a different guy.
Anyway, the intentions of these investors are not clear yet, as suggested before they might be planning to make Cagliari a proxy club for PSG, they might be willing to invest heavy and create a super power, and in the worst case someone is looking for short term entertainment. Either way if these people spend money in Italy then it could be positive for the whole league, and if they stick around then Serie A will benefit from the exposure. We'll know in time..

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
Massimo Cellino looks set to sell Cagliari to the Al-Thani family as he prepares the takeover of Leeds United.
The patron reportedly sent a text message this morning stating: “I have practically sold Cagliari, the formalities will be completed tomorrow when the lawyers of the buyers provide assurances to the league’s governing bodies. They are good people.”
According to TMW, the buyers are the Al-Thani family, who already tried to buy Roma and Manchester United in the past.
The Qatar-based group will buy 98 per cent of Cagliari Calcio, with the remaining two per cent remaining with Cellino’s son.
It is believed this deal is linked in with Cagliari’s new sponsors, MSC cruises, who can make the most of the Sardinian port and holiday destination.
The timing of the sale is no coincidence, as Cellino is on the verge of completing his takeover of English Championship club Leeds United.
Some of their intentions are known in that highlighted part.I did read in a no.of Italian articles today that they're ready to invest in the port of Cagliari(including Luxury hotels, navy etc).It was a similar case with Malaga where allegedly the main reason he(Al-Thani) bought out the club because he wanted to expand his interests in the City like owning a stadium and building hotels and shopping centres along with it but it failed because apparently some 'promises' were broken by the institution.
Knowing Italian bureaucracy, wouldnt be surprised if something like this happened again lol.

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
A piece on why Al-Thani turned his back on Malaga.
http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/22/sport/football/malaga-cazorla-al-thani-football/
So lets just say ,chances of something like this happening to Cagliari do look good.Could be wrong though.
Al Thani's interests in the Costa del Sol are not restricted purely to football. He has plans to build a "Sport City," complete with a new stadium, along with a luxury marina and hotel complex in the nearby resort of Marbella.
So why would a man of substantial means, with such an expansive vision for Malaga and the local area, suddenly get cold feet?
"I think he has lost interest and I think it stems from the fact Malaga didn't get the TV rights they wanted," George Prior, a reporter for the English version of Spanish newspaper Sur, told CNN.
"There are rumors he has lost interest because of a lack of urgency from the Spanish authorities with regards to his other projects -- the Marbella hotel, the Marbella port, the football academy he wants to set up and launch in Malaga. This has frustrated him.
French football club spends big Waking a sleeping football giant
"I think he is biding his time to see what is going on with his other projects. If the sports village and the port moved forward, it might reignite his interest in the club."
Trouble has been brewing for some time. The death of long-serving official Jose Carlos Perez Fernandez in February was a blow to the club, and in May highly-regarded former Spain captain Fernando Hierro left his role as Malaga's sporting director.
"It's a personal decision which I've already informed the owners of. I think it's the right time in order not to affect future plans," the former Real Madrid star said in quotes reported by the AFP news agency.
Prior rejected the idea Al Thani could have run out of cash, suggesting his lack of investment could be an attempt to push through his ambitious building projects.
"He's one of the richest men in the Gulf," he said. "He could resolve all of the financial problems within five minutes. I think it has now become somewhat personal, which is obviously frustrating fans and frustrating the players and the manager.
"It has been mooted by the fans on social media sites. Some of the fans are saying this is him saying, 'Look what I can do' ... But there is now a worry there isn't the financial backing that was there before."

Well on the plus side he could always "convince" Italian officials to back up his vision.

It's something of strange...it's strange to image an Arabian in Serie A, and expecially in Cagliari. You could image a top club, ma not Cagliari
on the one hand I can be glad for Serie A
It's important to have foreign investitors also in Serie A, before Americans, then Thohir, now Arabians (?) . It can help to grow the whole italian movement , and I would be glad also for Sardegna, a land in distress who can revive thanks to the football too as it was for Scudetto 1970 ( There was a lot of distrust about Sardinia at the time, it was considered a land of bandits and shepherds, the Scudetto helped to give a different and real image of Sardegna , a beautiful place)
on the other hand it would be another squad to brake balls for European places , and we struggle still with this Serie A
Anyway very curious how the situation will evolve

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
Part of me hopes this works out well. Aside from the fact I have nothing against Cagliarli, if foriegn investers come here and do well it may open the gates for several others to come in
I'm not in favour of a few teams going the way of Man City but if some of thes lesser clubs could actually sort themselves out and attract plenty of fans, decent players etc then everybody would benefit.

Re: The 2013-14 Calcio Saga Episode II
yes I have nothing against Cagliari club and city ( then my sister lives there ), it's a place who deserves to savor ambition , unknown thing if you have Cellino as president
However if Arabians really buy Cagliari it means there are other interests surely, I know Arabians are investing in Sardegna , otherwise I can't understand why they are gone to choice the only club in Serie A with problems for stadium
Oh , now I understand why Moyes was in Cagliari ... United fans the day of liberation is coming

I'd imagine they wanted a port city as previously mentioned above in their interest to invest in Cagliari's portal area.So i would assume their bigger interests probably lies outside of football.
