I'm not talking about saving Lukaku's shot obviously and as explained.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
The free kick took a deflection and he did very well to get a hand on it.free_cat wrote:He didn't clear or catch the free kick well, afterwards it took him ages to stand up again and let Mirallas to get the ball, chasing him Benny hill style, and leading afterwards to that goal.
then he followed through, but the defenders stood like statue , so he couldn't run after Mirallas. It should have been cleared after the ball was moved out wide, I can't believe we left Lukaku unmarked in middle of the box, to finish it.
Mignolet is superb in 1 vs 1s especially. Makes himself soo big. Schmeichel/Neuer style. The save from Lukaku 1 vs. 1 at 2-1 was the best of the game.
I also think Howard's save from Suarez' volley was very ynder-rated.

When he played in Sunderland I remember he lacked in high outputs...
but I think he has improved in this now.

lmao I was just about to post that
Neville rips him to shreds and he's absolutely right. Mignolet has so many flaws ffs.
He's still a great shotstopper but he's terribly flawed.
Victor come home you beaut

'Mignolet should save it and he doesn't because before he's crouching with his hands not in the air'
Has Neville any clue what he's talking about? How is Mignolet supposed to save that one
"I just think...he should save that"

Very good squad depth for a top 4 club. Very good starter for relegation scrubs. Great second choice for us then

Let's just make him the problem.
I mean, we have no attack, we have no defensive structure at all, but let's put all the blame on him.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
The point Neville is making about Mignolet having that technical issue in his game is correct, it is weird why he crouches so low.
However he is talking absolute trash about this particular goal, the flight of the ball is ridiculous and veers at pace from a low central position to near top corner.
Even Jagielka's body position when he strikes the ball suggests that the ball should end up in the centre part of the goal, but he seems to have cleanly struck it close to the outside of his foot.
To save that Mignolet imo would have had to be at least 2-3 inches taller and even then that doesn't guarantee anything.
And Carragher needs to shut up, Gerrard slips just inside his own half and the striker is through on goal at 0-0 and it's not even late in the game.....Excuse me what??
Why is the slowest man on the pitch the last man and so far from his goal knowing he has previous "balance" issues?
I wouldn't even question the GK in that case, if he stops the 1 on 1 where the striker is under virtually no pressure running for near 40-50 yards I would commend him very highly.
1 on 1 shooting under no pressure that's like a training ground drill ffs
Carragher was just bandwaggoning in that case, don't get me wrong I think Mignolet is not a top keeper but the two examples these two chose are hilarious.
The Arsenal and City examples Neville chose are much more appropriate.

Glad to see the hype has died down on him, never a top top GK only a decent/good one.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Can't wait for Mignolet to adjust his body in a higher position now just for the rest of the league to take lower shots at him and Mignolet getting too late to the ground.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Neville is talking garbage only 2 keepers (Courtois/Neuer) in the World have a remote chance of saving Jagielka's shot. Mignolet is bang average but he had no chance there.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
He is right though, its a technical mistake. Like he said at the end, you dont do alot of goalkeeping stuff in your coaches licence, but from what little you do do, that super low crouching thing Mignolet is doing is wrong.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
don't you think Mignolet himself might have given some thought to the question from which body position he can jump and make saves best?
And that thought process might have been a little more elaborate than some things that are said while obtaining a coaching license?
I mean I don't know of course...

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
What thought process though? Seems to be he is afraid of being beaten by low shots so he starts off lower...but then he is at a more difficult position to save the high ones.
Its just common sense really. There is a middle ground, which nearly all other goalie adhere to.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Maybe.. but it is really straightforward like that?
Lower position = better suited to reach low shots, higher position = ...?
Or isn't it also about from which position he can utilize/deploy his jumping strength from, move his body etc?
Again, I don't know anyting about it, but something about Neville's criticism feels far too casual for me.
I find it hard to believe that Neville (or you for that matter, with all due respect) would find basic technical mistakes in the game of a top goalie that Liverpool gk coaches don't find..

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Actually it is a style question. Some goalies use the lower basic position so that they can get more momentum so they can actually jump higher that way.
The problem is they need to have a very fast reaction time as the timing is crucial and they have less time to get to a higher ball. It depends on the height and the jumping power of the goalie, too.
You can't say that it is generally a technical problem as you have to take into account the physique of the GK.

He is the same height as Neuer though, why should he need to jump higher than him?

Well, dunno. I would have to take a closer look at him. My comment was meant more generally - that one can't say that it is generally wrong.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
He's garbage.
Genuinely rather have rwo in net. Please get fit Valdes and save us.
The goal...it's not that shot. It's the initial cross by Browling ?? that Skrtel failed to deal with , IT WAS WITHIN Mignolet's catching/punching area, yet he failed to come out and claim ANYTHING in the air as per se.
Thank god I didn't watch the game live, or else I'd gone mental.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
No way that GK saves that goal even if he was upright, but I do agree he shouldn't be crouched that low though..
Also that's might be the ugliest studio set I've ever seen in my life.. Wtf is that?

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Mignolet just doesn't work well for Liverpool. We need a keeper that can take command of his area and help organize the defence. Mignolet is, quite simply, a shot stopper. He doesn't read the game well, and he doesn't handle the ball all that well. His reflexes are good, but he'd be much better suited to a mid to small side that plays very defensively. He isn't good with space behind the D because he doesn't know how to command his area and it's obvious his communication is very lacking.
I don't hate him persay, but he doesn't belong at Liverpool with the way we are trying to play.
