Might depend on the age group tbh.

If people started watching football in say 08/09 and onwards they'll tend to say Xavi

Whereas Pirlo was winning what Xavi was winning prior to that.

Thats the thing.An average football fan thought of Pirlo as this new found 'old jewel' at the time of the Euros.Whereas Xavi plays for Barcelona and has been their 2nd most important player in their recent success as well as ,has lifted the WC for Spain.These are some of the factors which tick in his favor and hence why he has a bigger name than Pirlo.

I'd bet you if Pirlo played outside Italy for Real Madrid for example ,he'd be a much more renowned name than he currently is.

Neither Xavi or Pirlo is super-well known outside of footballing circles. As for casual watchers, the key question is did you start watching before 2006? or even 2007 (Milan CL win)? If yes = Pirlo, if no = Xavi.

if you started watching football late in the last decade, you will have barely seen Buffon at all whilst Iker was a CL regular + WC winner

But go back a few years, it was all Gigi. And many people regard prime Gigi as the top dog.
