I know everyone deserves a little but it has to be one MAIN reason why todays english football is the most popular in the world.

seriously, when you have big dogs like chelsea, arsenal, manchester united, manchester city, liverpool, totenham chasing a few cups, it's intense....

not counting the fact that teams like everton, QPR can pull upsets quite frequently :I

It's because of the worst refereeing at the top level

It's got great advertising and the TV stations always repeat that it is the best league of the world. If you hear that each time by every pundit etc, one day the brainwashing is successful

The focus on marketing has been intense ever since the EPL era started, and with all that money coming in, and all the foreign investors, the fall of Serie A, and the lack of interest in the Liga apart from the classico, the EPL was bound to become the most popular, even when the football isnt exactly to die for (at least for me)

English is the 'universal language' as they say.. Plus they have great presentation, any country that covers the EPL seems to have great pre-game and post-game shows etc. The in game sound is great because you can hear the crowd clearly, not primarily the commentators like when watching some other leagues.. Just crisp presentation all around

For example Gol TV here in Canada used to cover La Liga (in addition to other leagues), and the presentation was GARBAGE.. Ray Hudson and I forget his partners name, are pretty good but sometimes you get commentators that are unbearable.. The music, graphics, etc. was just shit

The turning point was creating Premier League in 92 with 'fair' TV rights.

Because of new-rich clubs turning a 1 or 2 horse race into an actual competition imho. That, to me, is the number one reason. Advertising, language, etc come into play, but the combination of money and competition is king.

Thats actually true. Crap or not crap... money is in English football right now with Bundesliga taking over soon that 2nd spot.

It's popular because it's been heavily marketed for many years now and the product itself is actually good entertainment. From a purist's perspective, the quality of football may not be as good as some would have you believe, but most games are usually fast paced, have a lot of chances, decent number of goals and drama. It's good entertainment to most people.

British Empire and english language.


This is the main reason why the EPL is so popular.

There's a lot of competitive teams, the atmosphere is good etc etc.

News Corporation and its ownership of Star TV which is by far the most influential English language satellite/cable broadcaster in South East Asia. Epl is pretty much the only thing you can watch so that coupled with the propaganda from British Sky (partly owned by news corp) and you end up with something akin to the hero worship of many dictators

It's clearly because of the fast paced & high energy football. Almost any game is watchable because of it.

No doubt the marketing by SKY & the success of English clubs in the CL also played a HUGE part but I doubt anyone would be watching games if the quality was poor.

It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The people behind the set up of the premier league deserve a lot of credit for making the league what it is imo. Both at the FA and at SKY.
