Re: Do you support teams from "your league" when they play in Europe?
Generaly no, i do not. There were a few rare cases , in which i caught myself hoping that Inter and Napoli should win in Europe , but in any case , it definitely wasn't about coefficient points . Fk the coefficient points , really
I've got nothing for Juvi though . In fact , compared to what i usualy feel and say when Juventus is playing in the CL , I am an Inter fan when Interis playing used to play in the CL , without any shame . Even during the last Derby D'Italia , i actualy caught myself rooting hard for Inter . I've always in my life was across Juvi , even as a kid before i became a Milanista , when i had nothing against them i never liked them.
I could never genuinely support them in a game , never mind for a reason like coefficient points

there is an inverse relationship between a how mature the fan is and how much he/she hates rival teams.

Like I said, I hope Inter, Nazio and Juve fail horribly in every match they play in. Other teams it depends. Was neutral in BVB-Napoli.

Bar Inter and Milan, yes,i do root for every other Italian team playing in Europe and this mainly because the league is in a bad state atm and there doesnt seem to be any signs of progress either.
In normal circumstances,i couldnt care less about other teams.

Only in the EL but obviously not Chelsea/Tottenham/United/City ( last few years)
Wanted Fulham to win the Uefa Cup few years back, and hoping Swansea does well in this year's EL.

It seems only clubs who are in leagues with shit co-efficient points support clubs from their leagues, i just can't see the logic in wishing a fellow domestic rival any success.

people usually outgrow adolescent tribal thinking after a certain point, especially when it's just football. I'm not saying you should be hugging rival fans coz after all it's competition, but if you cant respect your opponents then you still have some growing up to do imo.

Re: Do you support teams from "your league" when they play in Europe?
Yes, but only because I got no serious derbies to keep track of. My favorite team is St. Pauli, we play in the 2nd division, not in Europe. Our main rivals are the HSV, who are in the first flight and don't play in Europe, as well as Hansa Rostock, who sure as hell won't ever play in Europe.
So I tend to watch European Football mostly for the love of good football itself, and to keep track of the German and Swiss NT players, so I'll watch the Bundesliga clubs in pretty much all their matches, and also watch Arsenal, as well as FC Basel, if able. There's no German club playing in Europe I got much hate for, I used to dislike Dortmund and Bayern in the late 90s, but they've vastly improved their behaviour imho.
I don't see much of a point in mindlessly supporting clubs as some kind of surrogate WC - I sure as hell wouldn't cheer for the HSV, for example.

I have that same thought pattern as well. Well, something similar anyway.zizzle wrote:people usually outgrow adolescent tribal thinking after a certain point, especially when it's just football. I do like Celtic, but I really can't bring myself to watch the Scottish league.

Zizzle there is more to rival that your supposed "immaturity". I guess football fans for the past 100 years with historic rivalries based on geographic, political and socio-economic differences don't mean anything. They are probably just immature. That must be it.
