Chelsea, City, PSG and now Monaco!!!
Monaco is reportedly ready to splash €200 million on five players to fast-track their rise as an European elite. We have seen Chelsea, Man City, PSG, Zenith & Anzhi take the same path. True, such mindless spending paid both short & mid term dividends. Both Chelsea & City have established themselves as English powers while PSG is now the team to beat.
However, was the extent of spending really necessary! Does it justify the gains! Don't you think whatever the gains are, could have been achieved with only part of the spendings made! Well, it might have taken a bit more time (and don't forget none of Chelsea, City or PSG won in their first season).
All these teams could have bought a host of young talents, combined them with few star-signings and could still have enjoyed a rise. The spending wasn't even one-off. For several seasons, they continued to buy STAR players.
People say these spending help improve the clubs profile. Really!!! You just don't start supporting Chelsea, City or PSG just because they have signed a bunch of Crespo, Silva or Ibra! Even if they had signed some rising talents (and a handfull of stars) they would have enjoyed the same, as all those who watch football would knew these team would be attractive. Has ManU, Arsenal or even Liverpool has suffered ANY decline in their support-base! TV-rating!! Or commercial revenue!!!

If they are willing to spend it and are able to, I don't see why not. Everyone plays to win trophies and at the end of the day, Chelsea, City and PSG all became more successful after spending cash while clubs like Arsenal have not while promoting youngsters.

Why are you surprised? No-one actually wants to work hard for success anymore, they just want the quickest, easiest route possible to accolades as is humanly possible.

Are you saying people use to want to work hard for success in the past?
Pretty sure humans have always been lazy.

Is spending money lazy? It's just capitalism. We live in a capitalist world. Footy is not a socialist endeavor lol.

why are normal fans concerned with the amount spent on players? in fact, it is better that more and more clubs are getting owned by sugar daddies since talents will not be concentrated at a single club or region and competitiveness at a continental level will increase.. I don't get why this is such a big deal really

Re: Chelsea, City, PSG and now Monaco!!!
Working hard means getting the best out of your players and maybe signing one or two players to compliment what you already have. It means working on your tactics and gameplay, pinpointing any weaknesses and dealing with them accordingly
Nowadays, managers can't be arsed with all that and just buy six £30 million of the best players in their respective positions and call it a day. Defensive tactics? Screw that, just buy four of the best defenders in the world for £100 million. Striker lacking confidence? Buy Cavani etc etc etc
Lazy

You need to spend to win. I don't see any top flight team who has achieved consistent success in the league and Europe without spending big bucks for the best players.
And buying the best players is the fastest way to increase your marketability in football.

spending their own big bucks though... if you have a competitive advantage through decades of pursuing a certain business model that brings you more money than the opponents, fair play to you, you worked for it and you deserve to reap the rewards... man utd and madrid are very admirable in this way
chelsea and co, on the other hand, gained this advantage through sheer dumb luck when some shady oil baron got bored of buying bentleys and coke and decided to get into this football thing

this is more of an equivalent of a bunch of kids struggling to earn enough money to buy a ps2 and then the one douchebag's new stepdad gives him a ps3 and a huge tv

Why work hard when you don't need to?
Nothing wrong with clubs spending money to achieve success. It's just a strategy.

I don't have a problem with club owners wanting to spend money and trying to achieve instant success. But it is important that such endeavours do not saddle the club with unsustainable debt and short term liabilities that can turn ugly when the owner decides to bail. That is the reason i am in favour of FFP.
Otherwise, it takes effort to win even after buying the best players. You think playing a bunch of world class players together will get you success without the hard work that is needed? Sure they have the advantage when compared to other clubs that do not have the money, but they still need to compete with the best to win. And the best is always loaded with money.

Again, this is a competitive endeavor. It's not a picnic where everyone shares each other's food lol.

The question is not about spending. As I have mentioned, they could have had the same success (well, give or take) even if you spend less than what you have.

They could, but it's easier to trust bigger/expensive players to achieve success I guess.

It's funny how the people defending the spending are fans of some of the biggest spenders in the game

I'm a OM fan. We don't spend 70 mil on 2 superstars. We pay 2 mil for 70 nobodies with the hopes that we find a diamond in there somewhereLex wrote:It's funny how the people defending the spending are fans of some of the biggest spenders in the game

It's a disgrace. Modern football has ruined the game.
But you need to accept it and move on. If UEFA can't do anything about it, then no need to waste your time arguing with the apologists.
Thankfully clubs like Dortmund will always be around.

If spending is so bad, why isn't anyone trying to impose spending limits on clubs and bring everyone on a level playing field?

Because UEFA don't share the same views as the fans. They are running a business themselves.
