a 1 year back injury doesn't sound too good for his future.

I don't think he'll ever play again. We've been hearing he'll be back within 2 weeks since August ffs.

Agree. It would be a terrible shame. Such a fantastic player, a complete, intelligent midfielder.

Publicly of course this 'career threatened' stuff has been vocally denied by him and others involved.
What is known is that he has a 'nerve root inflammation' in the lower back, which 'can be treated' but takes whatever time it takes.
However when this inflammation doesn't go away for a year, it's not very far-fetched to speculate that the reason for this persistency would be some problem with his vertebrae - like a bulging disc tat keeps irritating the nerve etc.
In any case it's hard to imagine this is something that will just go away for good, although I VERY MUCH hope I'm wrong.

Exactly and even if it does go away, it's going to comeback. Back injuries are the trickiest to deal with in sports, feel sorry for him. he would be a madrid player if not for that back injury, sucks

Which would be an even bigger shame. The grass is not always greener away from BVB.

Fantastic news.

Everything else would've been ludicrous though, in his current predicament.
He needs a safe environment.

I just hope so very much he comes back to full strength.

BILD writes "Ilkay Gündogan (23) bleibt mindestens noch vier Jahre ein Borusse. Dortmunds Mittelfeld-Star hat seinen Vertrag bis 2016 verlängert!"

Doesn't make sense - 'he'll remain at Dortmund for at least 4 years, as he's extended till 2016'

Surmise that Gündogan's injury despite its loss to Dortmund was a subordinate reason behind the bigger and more financially blessed clubs outside Germany not prying him away; the long-term back injury subdueing the interest incurred from last year.

Will leave next summer anyway, atleast Dortmund get a good fee though. Good deal for both sides.

Die quälende Ungewissheit hat ein Ende. Nachdem Borussia Dortmund im Fall von Nuri Sahin jüngst Vollzug gemeldet hatte, wurde nun auch der Vertrag mit Ilkay Gündogan um ein weiteres Jahr bis 2016 verlängert. Das gab der BVB am Dienstag bekannt, ohne auf die genauen Vertragsdetails einzugehen

It's probably a way of protecting himself and the club protecting themselves.

No one is going touch him after his injury issues and quite frankly he should stay at least another season which hopefully he can remain injury free for.

it goes both ways, BVB given him a safe platform to recover, they cant realistically commit for any longer.
