Beginning of the end? Empty Beginning of the end?

Post by Art Morte Tue Mar 05, 2013 7:16 pm

At Manchester United.

Left out of the XI for their biggest game of the season so far.

I mean, I'll take my hat off for Ferguson for having the balls to start Ryan Giggs against a very athletic Madrid side and also starting the hot-and-cold-blowing Nani, but a couple of years ago you wouldn't have dreamt of going without Rooney into a match of this magnitude.

What does this tell you about Wayne Rooney's current role at United and his future at the club?

But starting Nani before Rooney for tactical reasons? I don't see it.

Yeah I don't see how starting a seriously out of form Nani over Wayne Woonay against a juggernaut like Madrid is a tactical masterstroke

Should probably place a bet on Nani scoring now.

He'll come off the bench in the second half and probably bag or create the winner for United. Fergie's been rotating his top strikers all season.

lol you people

why would rooney play the wing?

welbeck's pace was the reason rooney didn't start

do you have nothing better to worry about then Rooney?

Rooney cannot advance the ball with the dribble like Nani down the wings, doesnt have that type of dribbling ability.

A tactical decision and a good one.

Rooney could have easily started ahead of Giggs.

Rooney looked seriously pissed. I feel for him. Their best player easily. And only got 20 minutes in the most important match of the season.

Giggs was doing a good defensive job, he also advanced the ball and made some good passes...like a great cross for RVP.

Rooney in that exact role last time did the defensive job, but struggled with the ball like we all said a couple weeks ago.

Welbeck was Utd best players for me, a constantly outlet, made great runs and was a constant problem.

I agree with Sir Alex, though before the game I was worried, I was wrong.

Sir Alex was brilliant today. Welbeck was a constant danger and suffocated any space Xabi had today.

Brilliant tacitcs from Sir Alex and would have won him the game if not for Nani's red.

I agree that Welbeck was United's best player, did everything right today. But I dont think that he should have started over Rooney. We all know Rooney is one of the best big game players out there.and quite honestly, I feel like RVP drops his game massively when he plays with either Chicharito or Welbeck.

This, although Welbeck had a couple of chances which would have made the Red irrelevant if he took them.

But he got everything spot on, there is just some things a manager cannot effect.

Also it was just a tactical decision, Roonay will be at Yanited for the rest of his career.

Another good point. Last time vs us, he put Rooney in the same role Welbeck had today vs Busquets...and he left Busquets open all game long.

It's not really about roles imo. You can't just not play one of your best players. There has to be some way to accommodate him.

For all Roonay's so called work rate i don't think he understands how to close down spaces that well at all.

Pirlo had a cigar out all game against England.

To be fair to Fergie, he got it spot on at the beginning. We couldn't do shite in this game. Even if it meant benching your best player.

I think SAF did well with his selection and tactic. Welbeck was a joy to watch, Giggs did well defensively and got some nice pass up front, Nani got a key cross which lead to a goal and was overall good. All in all, MU didn't lose because of not playing Rooney; they left RM no chance when they had full team on the field.
