I'm not trying to take anything away from Messi here. I just think Iker could've done better and to me it seemed like he didn't position himself as good as he could have.

I don't think any player can shoot from free-kicks so accurately that it's actually worth taking the shot. I've never understood why players shoot from free kicks when their team is in such a strong, dominant position to score a goal from open play if they pass instead.

The ball went around the side of the wall and into the net, no Gk is going to position them self for that eventuality.
Suarez did the exact same thing on the weekend, amazing fk which had nothing to do with the GK's positioning, same as Messi excepts Messi's was even better cos it was further out

i have a stat running in a thread on the Please don't spam. forum about set piece goals conceded, this year so far we have conceded 7 goals, 3 of which were from set pieces so 42.86%
not to discredit the goal it was a great FK. just a tid bit of information.

One free kick doesn't change the fact that he's an average FK taker. Suarez scored a similar FK, but it doesn't make him all of a sudden an amazing FK taker.
Kudos to both Messi and Suarez though, those bends on the freekicks were sublime.

Ronaldo is also an average free kick taker. Long gone are the days where he is a threat from free kicks. Every time I see him take a free kick I sigh in relief cause I know it's either going way over or into the wall.

Ronaldo has been shite at FK's lately but last three season's he's had spells of FK consistency where he'd score quite a few during a positive stretch of games. Messi though has never had that stretch of consistency, he scores one once in a blue moon like every average Joe.

Considering only Cazorla scored more than him in La Liga, he's not so average. I never said he edged him just that he's not average, he's decent, he has room to improve that's for sure and he has plenty of time to do that. overall if I have to make a choice. Last season Messi took less, scored more. A season or two before, wasn't there a video (i'll check if it is still out there) where Ronaldo could not score in about 30-40 freekicks he took? Talking about consistency...
Messi takes less and scores more, so his ration is much better last three years.
