This point last season, Arsenal were 6th with 34 points.

In our last 10 home fixtures, we've only conceded once - Deulofeu's goal for Everton back in December.

Looking at that, I was wondering what our most common scoreline was this season...

Out of 34 games, we've won 2-0 10 times. Our second most common scoreline is 3-1, standing at 4 times, followed by 1-0, 2-1 and 1-1 at 3 times each.

We've won 1 game by more than 3 goals.

We've been involved in 1 goalless draw.

The most common scoreline we've lost by is 2-0, which occurred twice.

I've noticed we've had a lot of 2-0's. Feel the team relies on absorbing pressure after that, we never seem to get that extra goal unless we need it.

Our plan usually is to score 2 goals and then take a defensive stance via either poverty possession or just staying back in shape. It's been working really well but always a danger of complacency.

There are a few games that we could've actually gone on to win 4-0/5-0. But is it just a coy that Wenger has started to maybe save some energy in the players? hmm

Note: he hasn't used the jaded word this season, so it might be just that.

Wenger has become more concerned with results than style, so probably doesn't encourage his players to go for broke and get more goals as much as he used to. He wants the team to prioritise securing the result, and it's something the players are comfortable doing. That the players don't expend energy embellishing a result is probably just a useful additional benefit rather than a motivation for the change of mentality.

The main issue with it is that it's dependant on controlling the game and keeping the opposition at arm's length, either by starving them of the ball for long periods or by preventing them from creating any sort of decent opportunity on goal, but in some circumstances this isn't always possible. In the recent Villa game, we were comfortable, then Villa managed to get a goal and suddenly we had to go into full-on defensive mode for the last quarter of an hour. We wouldn't have had to do that had we scored a third or fourth goal.

The Coventry game is a good example, too. Arsenal sat on their 2-0 lead, let Coventry have more of the ball and they created good chances. Had one of those gone in, the game becomes very different. When we scored the third goal, the fight went out of Coventry.

That we've achieved a 2-0 scoreline so many times is indicative of how good we are at seeing out results, but there are times where you've got to push a little bit more. I hope to see more 3-0 and 4-0 scorelines in the second half of the season.
