Cristiano is a better player, but can't deny the fact that Raul is unique.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
Don’t think it’s a great comparison since Raul was not a pure 9,so comparing him to Ronaldo who works in very particular channels is difficult. He was a kind of second striker who used to be a complement of the 9 of his teams (call it Zamorano, Morientes, Anelka, Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Huntelaar, etc.).
But Raul in his day, truly something special. His goal scoring ratio for the era was incredible and as a percentage of the teams goals was on par with Ronaldo’s.
Pure intelligence , awareness.
He could run a channel on either side to develop a play., he will do it.you ask him to make the extra pass he will do it almost every time. he spaced the pitch as good as just about any other forward I've ever seen. He picked his time and his place to perfection that's what I love about him. His movement was unbelievable, thus as a foil for other strikers he was probably second to none.
He's wasn't soley a poacher he's capable passer , he's capable of spacing the pitch by floating out to the wings, he was smart a player as there was in the game.
In his prime he was almost the counter attacking threat Ronaldo was, had similar speed, had better couldn’t exactly get by his man but had better positional instincts.
Under Del Bosque he played more of a teraquista role , linking the attack and midfield, something Ronaldo is not capable of doing, he was never a highlight reel passer but more of a short simple distributer, thus the youtube generation won’t remember him like they do Del Piero and Totti, though, if you watched the games, he arguably played the position just as well.
Better first touch, better awareness of space and passing options, better vision.
He made sacrifices for the team.He gave up his stats in favour of a more fluid and dynamic team play. His intagibles are infinitely better.
He scored in 2 separate Champions League finals, semi-finals, quarter-finals, and big goals in the group stages against big teams.
Amazing finisher, and smart player. Like Hierro said once: "Raul isn't a 10 in anything, but he's a 9 in everything".
He could play as a striker, forward and a midfielder. One of the most complete players I’ve seen you could see him going back into the midfield doing the dirty work, his work rate is simply outstanding. That’s why he got the comparisons to Di Stefano early on.
In his prime, he was the best at his position.
Sadly, after the 2004 season, something happened to him that is unexplainable. He became a shadow of his former-self. Still, I don't think anyone has an explanation of what happened there.
Thank god for Magath and his crazy training, people actually got to see a little impression of what Raul used to be, not nearly as good but more true to the player he was pre galactico era, not the poacher he was from 04 to 09 after the injuries and marginalized role.
If I had to choose a player for my team, it would be Raul, Ronaldo’s a great player , has some clear advantages over him, is a better fit for certain setups , but I don’t think we can clearcut say he was a better player, and certainly not a level above or by the margin being insinuated.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
Raul's first touch was amazing, as well as his first touch passes. But Ronaldo is better, faster, better dribbler, stronger, better fk-taker, better header, and his consistency is astonishing. The way he scores goals every match is amazing.
PS: For Madrid, I'd choose prime Raul no doubt.

Yet we ignore ronaldos 15 assists this season.. josh can we please stop with the myth that ronaldo is selfish, because he is far from it.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
Cristiano Ronaldo took more shots last season (400) in 5812 minutes than Raul did in his last 5 seasons at Madrid (15611 minutes)
Raul minutes per shots : 49.
Ronaldo minutes per shot: 14.53.
I respect his assists to be honest, has a decent backheel final ball and good high and low cross, but they and those are effective weapons on the counter.Just don't see how you can label him as unselfish.

Ronaldo has yet to accomplish and perform the way Raul has in multiple UCL finals.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
A more debatable topic would have been Raul vs David Villa. That certainly would have been a testing discussion. This one, however, is not much of a discussion.
As Old man Jibers harshly but correctly put it, some men either wasn't aware or forgot how good Raul really was.
Ok, Jibers didn't say exactly that but mine was more easy to the eye...

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
Raul was really good man. But I am talking pure talent and ability, not hard work.
In big games though Raul>>> cr
He wasn't a far better player but he has a better mentality, and was calmer.
But raul has achieved far more with madrid.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Raul (prime)
A prime Raul is a better team mate and benefited Madrid more as a team, hell an old Raul benefits his team in Germany more then Ronaldo.

Raul.. Cristiano is probably the most over-rated footballer I have ever seen, he's a great player but it stops there
