What's a defender gotta do to win a Ballon D'or around here?

Seriously, how long will it be before we see another defender win the Ballon D'or?

With Messi and a host of other talented attackers hogging all the votes, it seems almost impossible for a defender to win this award.

Like Cannavaro, is winning the world cup one of the only ways as long as Messi and such are top scorers year after year?

Well you need another Beckenbauer, Maldini, Baresi type defender to have any chance of getting Balon d'Or votes.

True... defenders of today aren't of the highest quality. There really ain't any standout guys I'd vote for if given the chance.

Even the Cannavaro thing was totally world cup politics...

Maldini and Zanetti, 2 of the finest defenders to ever grace a football field never came close ti winning it. Obviously the award is biased towards attacking players who score and create goals

I know...what I was trying to say is that you need defenders to be at a level close to these guys to have any chance of getting votes against the Messi's and Ronaldo's. At the moment the quality of defenders isn't anywhere near those mentioned.

Agree, that pretty much says it all.

Maldini went 3rd place in 2003, Roberto Carlos 2nd in 2002. Buffon and Kahn were 2nd and 3rd a few times.

That's it for the past decade.

Cannavaro's award was a bloody farce!

I don't think the Ballon D'or competition has any integrity left. Bad choices in the past, the spectre of corruption looming over it and no transparency in the decision-making process. The whole thing stinks.

They gotta become strikers....

They require a league triumph and probably a CL in a squad that doesn't have a dominant forward or midfielder but rather players who are talented but make balanced contributions or have been absent through injury for long enough to exclude them.

So in short it probably won't happen again for quite some time.

how many per season is a lot? lol...or at least, a ratio.

It's depressing to know that strikers are usually are just nominated and win for the most parts.

Look at 2010 WC performances. Iniesta had scored the winning goal. Sneijder won the treble, as well as being exceptionally good in WC. How many performances must xavi repeats during 2008-2010?

not that he's not important or doesn't have anything but...the current system is more broken than the old one.

Honestly I think defenders need their own award that considers only defending when voting.

Sort of like a "defensive player of the year" or something like that.
