Exactly. Spurs HAD the chance to clinch 3rd fully aware that Chelsea could potentially win the CL and doom whoever finished 4th to the Europa. And they f*cked it up nicely Laughing

Oh i beg to differ. We'll be playing CL football next year on Sky sports and ITV while Tottenham slum it out on Channel 5. As far as two teams who were out of the title picture and were vying for a CL spot go, i'd say our campaign was better.

If Spurs and Chelsea both deserve to play in the Champions League like most of you are assuming - should EPL have 5 spots? It does not make sense the champion to not even have a chance to defend it.

Not really. Like I said it was only a point difference in the end and you nearly effed it up with that magnificent performance against West Brom.

I look at all 38 games played and not just how it ended. They screwed up big time and lost so many points near the end, but they were in the hunt for a top 3 spot and that is all because of how well they did earlier on. All counts.
Even your goal difference was equal, 25 each.

Stupid idea...Chelsea won the freaking CL they should qualify again next year automatically

if anyone should be in a playoff it should be Arsenal-Spurs, but Arsenal bested them over a 38 game season so why the hell should they have to play them in a one-game playoff?

Threw away a 10 point lead.

Went on a crap run of one win in 13 games.

Dropped silly points to Wolves at homes, lost to Norwich at home and should have went all out to defeat Villa away knowing what was at stake.

Conclusion- no one to blame but themselves. They choked when it mattered, like they always do.

In 2004-2005 Liverpool finished 5th and won the CL, Everton finished 4th and both were in the CL the following season.

They had to change the structure of the competition and Liverpool had to join the competition at the 1st qualifying stage...

It's better this way, its a shame for Spurs ( in a sense) but the only way it can change is if the competition is re-structured in such a way where both can fit.....

Luckily Everton got KO'ed in the qualifying stages by Villarreal so it wasnt as bad as it really could have been.

All in all the winners take prority over a 4th place team.

I don't know why is this even being considered, Chelsea just won the feckin Champions League - they have every right to defend it without playing a two-legged match before. Spurs had bad luck they finished 4th this year but there's no other possibility other than letting both go in the Champions League. Which would not be fair to another team etc....

Btw why's no one crying about how Chelsea and Spurs ruined Swansea's chance of playing in the EL next year. Rolling Eyes

They have no right to defend it if they havent qualified for the next edition by the normal means.

that rule is pure BS as far as i am concerned. The play off idea is the best way to settle it, and to give respect to the teams actually putting in the work during the season.

The Champions League is not like a world heavyweight title, it's not like you have to beat chelsea to be crown the new champion.

IIRC the team that finishes on top of the fair play table gets automatically an Europa League spot. I guess Spurs should play a two-legged match with that team aswell Very Happy
