That should be the way to decide who gets the CL spot in occasions like this imo.
It would be ridiculous to not have the defending Champions in the CL, but also it's a bit shit when you've worked so hard for 4th and it means nothing.

Yeah that would be absolutely fair.
Spurs worked hard over 8 months to achieve that 4th place, and it's a bit cheap to see them losing it that way.
A playoff game between both sides would be a fair way to decide which team gets it.

Spurs choked a potential 13 point lead away. They only have themselves to blame.
The rules were already established before the season started. They don't deserve any sympathy.

This LOL, Chelsea won the CL so deserve to defend the trophy oh and BTW England only has 3 nailed on places for the CL the other is reserved for a possible winner ( Chelsea) or a play off spot( Spurs)
If Chelsea win then boohoo, Spurs should have nailed down 3rd anyway they only have themselves to blame.....
And Yes i would have said the same if we finished 4th.

That is nonsense, Spurs knew the rules before the start of the season, yet they managed to lose third spot, when many thought they could even challenge for the title at some stage in the competition. They got what they deserve. The Champions league cannot be complete without the Champions of Europe.

Absolutely no-one would give a shit if Arsenal had finished 4th 
Spurs (and every team in the PL) were aware of the rules from day 1 of the season. Spurs weren't good enough to finish 3rd. That's that.

It's not that straight forward in my opinion. CL qualification is obtained through showing league consistency and proving you are one of the best in your league.
In this case, Chelsea flunked their season while Spurs proved more consistent. I admire Chelsea's determination and champions quality in CL but on paper they didnt earn their spot through the league.
It seems to me a respectful thing to do, to allow the teams putting the work through the season to have a playoff game. It's not such a crazy thought.

Quite a conundrum the FA find themselves in. Or not. Just send Tottenham to Europa and be done with it already. A play off is actually not a bad idea but it would basically spoil the whole defending champions thing.
But then again, the defending World Cup Champions have to qualify like the rest of the nations so it's certainly something to ponder on...

Over the season Chelsea were not better than Spurs. Winning the champions league makes them look they actually were better. They were fairly even. Rule for CL qualification is finishing top 4, Spurs did exactly that. Unfair for them to get knocked out.
Imo they do deserve some sort of play off chance.

Based on what perspective you are viewing it from it could be seen as unfair.
