It basically takes into account of average amount of goals scored per game in the era, and then compares that into a different era.

Example

In Gerd Müller's 72-73 season and competitions which he played, scored on average 3.91 goals per game, which is about 1.4x more than what is scored now on average ( 2.8 ). Which then indicates that it was easier to score in the 72-73 in the competitions involved, or that offence was better than defence on average than now.

It doesn't say that football was easier then, only that scoring on average was easier.

Sure, but in better time. That's not really hard to do if you want to try. You can find goal statistics basically for everything in http://www.rsssf.com

Just calculate total number of goals and games in every competition that players were involved.

Then use the equation (example Messi compared to R9):

((Total Goals in 11-12) - Messi goals)/ Total Games in 11-12

/

((Total Goals in x) - R9 goals)/ Total Games in x)

, to get the adjustment ratio. Then multiply R9 goals with that ratio to get the era adjusted statistics.

So, you are removing Messi's and R9's influence and then comparing the number of goals scored per game between the two eras. If this era has higher number of goals scored per game than the previous era, then R9's era-adjusted goals will increase and vice-versa.

Don't forget Messi's titanic tally of 1 goal in two world cups.

Dont understand why this is a difficult concept. He is adjusting and making things on an equal footing. Granted there are variables than cannot be captured by this simple adjustment, but this is valid.

It also does not necessarily mean Messi will score more goals in a previous era or Pele will score lesser goals in this era. It is just a statistic adjustment to make comparisons better.

We saw that already. without messi spain with xavi and iniesta could score only 1 goal 7 matches in a row. without xavi and iniesta messi's argentina scored 3-4 goals every game.

About creating goals for messi, it mostly comes from Alves not Xavi or Iniesta. Even against big teams messi's goals mostly didnt come from xavi or iniesta. Last season CL final - his goal nothing to do with xavi and iniesta. CL semi-final his 2 goals vs Madrid has nothing to do with Xavi and Iniesta. His 4 goals vs Arsenal has nothing to with xavi iniesta. so what big games you talk about?
