Away goals rule becoming negative? Empty Away goals rule becoming negative?

Post by BarcaLearning Sat Mar 17, 2012 9:42 am

I forgot where I read it, but Wenger was quoted to say he thinks nowadays, teams in the CL take advantage of the away goals rule so much, they are very happy to get 0-0 at home and then go for it in the away game as u get the advantage of the away goals, knowing that 1 goal the host will need to score 2, etc. I remember a few years ago, the general plan were to go for 0-0 away from home and win it in the return. But now there seems to be a change in that teams are more afraid of the away team scoring and perhaps going more defensive at home as a result.

Im not sure if thats changed and if Wenger is right. But the rule has been around for I dont know how many years. But do u think its having a negative impact on the tactics? I think it has a huge impact on the game plane, not sure positive or negative.

Has there been or what was the rule b4 the away goals rule were introduced? Can it be changed at all?

Secondly, on the defensive note. I remember the WC when we had Spain winning all 1-0s and general tactics in it were defensive and ppl complained and commented that football has become that. But this season we have seen all the big leagues and in Europe consistently attacking play, high scoring matches etc. So luckily in that sense football has not become defensive, but rather more intense and entertaining. Thats a result of say some teams pressing more as first introduced largely successful by Barca and hence teams followed I think. Or maybe just club football is very different to country football. Ur opinion?

but extra time + Pk's add a lot of drama too... IDK for me it should just be the two games, and whoever scores the most out of the two win and if it's tied.... then they go to extra time... screw away goal rule.

I agree. The away rule is just a too big advantage.

I consider it almost like 2 goals. It makes being home a liability.

Just way too big advantage. They need to change it to ET if tied, then PK.

it should be abandoned if a match reaches extra time, no reason why one team should have 30 more minutes to score goals that pretty much count as two

This is why I feel Napoli was robbed.

Extra 30 mins at Stamford bridge of course Chelsea will go through.

If it was the last 30 mins at the San Paolo there would be no English teams left in Europe at all.. :coffee:

I would not at all be happy with a 0-0 at home, but that's just me. I like the away goal rule since it forces teams to go after goals in some cases, plus defenses have to be virgin tight.

I really dislike the away goals rule. Its takes the passion out of a lot of the games and makes it very dull.

Its been crap for years now, it really isnt fair.

Teams can draw 0-0 at home and be happy with that result.

If Napoli has scored in extra time, Chelsea would have had to score ANOTHER GOAL as Napoli would have the advantage on away goals. How the bloody f*k does that result to Napoli being robbed?

because napoli had to play 90 mins at home but 120 minutes away, so chelsea has a 30 minute home advantage.

With or without the away goals we were going to extra time, how were Napoli robbed?

On topic: I miss golden goal rule too. I don't think away goals are negative, however, I don't think they should go into extra time.

Sensitive Chelsea fans

Was 50/50 messing about. Chelsea obviously deserved to go through but I stick to what I say about them having an advantage by playing an extra 30 mins at home :coffee:

Away goal rule had nothing to do with us playing 30 minutes extra at home, that was because of the fixtures, you had no reason to bring it up in this thread.
