Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
Arsenal v Manchester United, Sunday 22nd January, 4pm, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, Sky Sports 1
Aaron Ramsey's strike secured three points for Arsenal against Man United at the Emirates last season
Premier League Table
1. Man City 51pts
2. Man Utd 48pts
3. Spurs 46pts
4. Chelsea 41pts
----------------
5. Arsenal 36pts
6. Newcastle 36pts
7. Liverpool 35pts
Arsenal looking to bounce back from consecutive league defeats
Defeats at Fulham and Swansea in Arsenal's last two league games have left the gunners' season in real trouble. Despite taking the lead in both games, Arsene Wenger saw his side leave Craven Cottage and the Liberty Stadium with no points, and the Arsenal manager is adamant his side must "wake up". Wenger's side will be hoping to avoid three consecutive league defeats on Sunday - something the Frenchman hasn't seen his side suffer since March-April 2007, when Arsenal lost away at Everton and Liverpool, before a shock defeat at home to West Ham (Arsenal's first ever defeat at the Emirates).
Manchester United back on track after shock defeats
Arsenal aren't the only top side to suffer back-to-back league defeats recently, Manchester United suffered the same feat over the new year period. A shock 3-2 home defeat against Blackburn was followed by a 3-0 hammering at Newcastle. However, Sir Alex Ferguson saw his side return to winning ways at Old Trafford last weekend, when the champions beat Bolton 3-0. United arrive at the Emirates with 9 wins from their last 12 league games.
Gunners out to avenge historical defeat in August
On August 28th, Arsenal suffered their worst defeat since 1896, when they lost 8-2 at Old Trafford against Manchester United. It was simply a catastrophic day for Arsene Wenger and his side. Rooney's hat-trick and Young's double helped Ferguson's side to hammer Arsenal that day. What followed, was a last minute rush in the transfer market from Wenger as the Arsenal boss snapped up 5 players (Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker, Park Chu-Young, Mikel Arteta + Yossi Benayoun).
Match Facts
* Rooney scored his first Premier League goal, his first Premier League goal for Man Utd, his 100th Premier League goal and his 150th goal for Man Utd in all competitions against Arsenal.
* Man Utd have won seven and lost one of their last nine matches against Arsenal in all competitions.
* Thierry Henry scored seven goals in eight home appearances against Manchester United.
* Henry’s last goal at the Emirates in the Premier League was a last-minute winner against the Red Devils.
* Arsenal have only scored more than once in four of their last 16 Premier League games at the Emirates and netted just 20 in total over those matches.
* The Gunners have won none of their last 10 Premier League games with Mike Dean as the referee (W0 D5 L5).
* Arsenal have dropped eight points from winning positions in their last four Premier League matches.
* Man Utd have gained just one point from behind this season, fewer than any other team.

Manager's Views
Arsene Wenger
"For me, not making the top four would be a disaster. Because I want to play with the best. We want to play in the Champions League and anything else would not be good enough."
"Ferguson will manage until he dies and I think he will be 100. I only said that I have the same hunger because I'm very polite! My motivation is to beat him. To last the longest is not a record. Of course I will never beat his record. But to win the game on Sunday is my motivation. We have to consider that we are in a job where we need our physical strength and health. That weakens, I've heard, the older you get.”
Sir Alex Ferguson
"I don't think that Arsenal not being a threat is the issue. I think it's because they are different types of teams. The type of player they had, the likes of Vieira, Petit, Henry, Tony Adams and Steve Bould, has been replaced by a different type now. It's a younger player, a different type altogether. Arsène has not changed his philosophy and it has paid dividends for Arsenal over a long period. He is still trying to do the same things. He is still trying to entertain and to play their football their way."
"You have to go back five or six years for when it was last combustible, when Keane and Vieira had that slanging match in the tunnel. You have to go back a few years. I don't think it has been anything like that for the last three years. It has calmed down a bit. Do I miss it? That's a good one."

Re: Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
Thanks Sam, great preview.
I know we are short at the back, I know this game is very important and I know all the players are waiting for this game.
We will see a fearless and motivated Arsenal. We will win this game mark my words
RVP will make us all proud.
3-1 to Arsenal.

Re: Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
This is a time when the boys gotta stand up and fight. Form don't mean jack in big games. ramsey and Rosicky gotta run back and help in defence. Song has to make sure he keeps the ball well, because Rozza likes to always play the ball forward and make the risky pass and Ramsey is Ramsey. We can do this. Boys just gotta believe. Up Gunners!!!!

Close enough, I dream about winning by astronomical amounts, and then we lose ):The Verminator wrote:Man does this only happen to me or does it happen to you guys too?

Re: Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
I had a dream 3 days ago that I was watching the game from a pub in Windsor called 'The Manchester' (official supporters club of Man Utd), we got embarrassed, and everybody laughed at me. And I had no pants
Then again, last night I had a dream I had a threesome with my ex-girlfriend and a model, and as of yet this has yet to occur either.

Yes, Rosicky did well at Swansea when he came on. Hopefully he starts over Benayoun.

8-2 team:
-------------Szczesny
Jenkinson----Djourou----Koscielny----Traore
---------------Coquelin
--------------------------Ramsey
-------------- Rosicky
Theo Walcott--------------------Arshavin
---------------van Persie
probably team for tomorrow:

oh dear, the only position that is significantly better is defensive midfield
i will take anything less than 0-3

@ Diego
Mert> Djourou at CB
Miquel> Traore defensively
Djourou> Jenkinson
Our midfield is 2x as good with Song and Arshavin and RVP have had good runs of form.
We're better and at home, hopefully that's enough.

Re: Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
Great job Sam
NO Anderson,NO Fletcher
without those energetic runners they may come to slow it down and keep it calm
we should raise the tempo and play brave and at fast pace their midfield will find it hard to cope / Just like vs Newcastle
i would rather Ferdinand make it
OUR MAIN concern should be dealing with the likes of Nani and Valencia
with Arshavin i hope he tracks back and help Miquel out
though if Verm make it it would huge Boost
and Song should Deny Rooney the space between the lines
yet again SHAME Arteta is not available
hope if things not going our way crowd remains behind the team and help them to overcome Manure

Re: Arsenal v Manchester United Preview
Tough match, I would have been confident if our team was available but with so many injuries, its hard to predict the out come
But hey, we are at home. We can win this.
The battle will be at the wings, Stop Nani n Valencia from cutting in and crossing. welbeck and Rooney will cause problems but Koscielny can handle Rooney while Mertesacker can outthink welbeck.
Somehow this game will be different then previous years. We wont be countered because we dont play the same style anymore. We will counter them instead. With Theo n Arshavin, we can do good amount of damage if only their final ball is good enough.
we need to be clinical. Missing chances wont lead us anywhere
