Varane vs Smalling

Similar size and stature, Although Smalling is playing regularly but varane also played number of games. I would like you people who watch both to rate them on the bases of the following ratting.

Defenisve Positioning:
Varane 7/10 _________ Smalling 7.5/10

Man Marking:
Varane 7.5 _________ Smalling 8.5/10

Tackling:
Varane 8/10 _________ Smalling 7.5/10

Recovery Speed & Reactions: (After faild tackle or bad positioning):
Varane 8.5 _________ Smalling 7.5/10

General Speed (Acceleration/Agility/Pace):
Varane 7/10 _________ Smalling 8/10

Slide tackling & Blocking:
Varane 7.5 _________ Smalling 7/10

Heading & Jumping:
Varane 8.5 _________ Smalling 8.5

Concentration & Consistency:
Varane 7.5 _________ Smalling 7.5

Technique & Passing:
Varane 8.0 _________ Smalling 8.0

Hope i didnt miss anything, Remember, this are only my views and i dont watch smalling regularly, just against big teams, please post yours, and be nice to each other, this is just fun thread. I probably gave low ratings in all the cuz i want it to be compared to the best defenders.

I havent seen much from Smalling, but I can say that Varanes 1v1 duels has been pretty much successful from the start of preseason. In terms of skill Smalling and Varane are pretty much equal imo.

Varane has much more potential, but at the moment Smalling is better

thats why he has higher ratting 8 then smalling 7.5, but he also lost few tackles the past few games, probably cuz of lack of gamplay.

Smalling.

Varane = potential to be great
Smallling = has more game time & experience atm

no contest smalling is alot better.

There was a vote much earlier in the season about this. Think it was between Smalling, Jones and Varane. Smalling won that vote and I think that won't change. All 3 have a bright future though...

Small is better ATM but that's due to more game time. Varane had more potential

I remember when superMAG said we were mad to sign a noob like Varane, that we needed to go after Smalling because he is so fast. Now he is making up fifa stats for both, nice

if i remember correctly, i said we needed to "also" sign smalling. i said nothing about not signing varane.

Varane is good but I'll give to Smalling.

Yeah, that actually is a pertinent question. How did you come up with those ratings and what basis are you even rating them by? Because, if Varane is 7/10 in defensive positioning (which is just positioning btw), I assume guys like Vidic, Silva, Nesta, Puyol, Pique, um, Terry (lol) have like 9 or perfect.

I really wonder about your football thinking Mags. Not that it is bad or anything...

Well, i like numbers, i remember them easily that way. there are too many players to remember all their strength and weaknesses, so i write those numbers somewhere, and then when i see the number, i remember why i rated him that way, and see if he has improved in certain areas or deproved in others.

You are correct, they probably have like 9, 9.5 or even 10. The thing about positioning is how they defend, the way they dont let the ball even reach the striker by anticipating in other words to position them-self so they can steal the ball before it reaches the attacker, or staying tight to the attacker all the time, varane is young, i couldnt give him more then 7.5 because he usually leaves his attacker sometimes and he havent yet mastered the veretern's way to anticipate, probably cuz he is young and havent yet played a full season to improve and remove his mistakes and improve his overall game, to deserve ratings above 9, he need to be very consistent in his positioning, its like almost never have bad positioning.

Afcource no matter how good you are, some goals cannot be stopped.
