Re: Chelsea Youth & Reserves thread
Anyone in the mood for a good laugh?
I don't know where to begin with this horrible article.
Firstly, we've got Ake and Christensen (neither are English, but both will be homegrown) on top of JT and Gaz, We also have Baker on the cusp of first team AND many of our youngsters may not be getting first team games but they certainly are getting better chances to play at higher levels than they would otherwise.
Calling it a shame is the actual shame, express.
- Spoiler:
Chelsea's FAILED youth policy is a shame on the English game
http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/505193/Chelsea-s-failed-youth-policy-is-a-shame-on-the-English-game
Three pounds buys you glossy pictures, engaging articles on the club's history, a welter of vital statistics, and the only place on earth where you will find Jose Mourinho being dull in some unbelievably bland manager's notes.
Then you turn to the back page - and find a shocking sight.
It is the official Chelsea first team squad list, which contains just two English players among the 24 names listed. Yes, only two; John Terry and Gary Cahill.
This is one of the elite clubs of English football, our most recent champions of Europe, favourites along with Manchester City to win this year's Premier League, and they appear to have all but given up on belief in the quality and use of home-grown players.
Yes, it is shocking - and it is almost unique in football anywhere in the world.
Other rich and powerful and successful clubs do not neglect youthful domestic talent even as they pay monstrous fortunes to acquire the finest global superstars.
Bayern Munich fielded a local 17-year-old defensive midfielder, Gianluca Gaudino, in their opening Bundesliga match last weekend and he looked to the manor born.
Barcelona started their La Liga campaign playing 18-year-old Spanish striker Munir El Haddadi, who scored a fabulously clever goal.
The equivalent player at Chelsea right now is probably Nathaniel Chalobah, a hugely promising 19-year-old midfielder who has yet to play a single minute of first team football for the club, and cannot even be found a place in a 24-man squad.
How good is Chalobah?
Well, that is still to be discovered. But we do know he was selected for the England U21s last week, for whom he has already played 15 times.
He played for the England U17s at the age of 14, which suggests the possibility of excellence, and he receives regular name checks from England manager Roy Hodgson as a player of the future.
What the kid needs, though, is to be tested in the present - and in the Premier League.
Chalobah is currently in the classic Catch 22 situation. His manager, Mourinho, praises his potential yet doesn't pick him, therefore revealing he doesn't think the player is good enough. But how can the teenager prove his worth if he never gets a chance?
It is the nightmare scenario that meant several wasted years for Daniel Sturridge at Manchester City and Chelsea, and stalled the progress of Jack Rodwell when he too was left in the shadows at City.
We could just heap the blame on youngsters like Chalobah and Rodwell and say it's their fault for picking the wrong club, being tempted by the lucrative wages offered by oil baron owners and then stuck under the wing of managers reluctant to take risks on youth.
Other top English clubs in Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham clearly have a better record of player development - and managers with a longer-term outlook.
The swift journey of teenage defender Calum Chambers into the England squad after impressive early season displays for Arsenal is evidence of that.
Tottenham's willingness to give responsibility to the talent of Eric Dier has also been a welcome note of this campaign so far.
Yes, we could blame Chalobah. But that would be wrong
It is not just for the sake of an individual talent like his that Chelsea's policy is so depressing.
Isn't it also a major concern for the future of a great club that the playing staff has so little connection with its own land and with the kids who chase around the football fields of London dreaming of becoming a star?
The first time I saw John Terry he was 13 years old, a classy midfielder on a mud-soaked pitch in a district match in East London.
I was spending a day in the company of a scout from Manchester United who hoped to persuade the kid to join his club.
He told me it was likely to be in vain. Terry was already set on Chelsea; a club he thought would give him a good chance to become a professional.
So it proved back then, two decades ago.
Not a single English player after Terry has come through the ranks to make a career at Chelsea, a club which reveres its legends like Peter Osgood and Ron Harris.
Surely it's time that changed.
I don't know where to begin with this horrible article.

Not surprised, he would have been kept if we didn't loan Ginky.

Ginkel left, allowing Schwarzer to be registered on our 25 man squad, as third choice. If Kinky stayed, he'd take that non-homegrown spot and Schwarzer wouldn't be registered, therefore our third GK would have been Blackman.

Speaking of Kakuta, he scored for Rayo, this past weekend. They still lost.
