Greatest European XI of all times?
Good ol' Carlo made an entire Article out of a "my right back"-thread.
Read it 'ere: http://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2011/11/29/2776856/the-greatest-european-championship-xi-of-all-time-featuring
Actually a pretty decent lineup. Wouldn't really disagree, which is surprising, because, you know, Carlo.
But it's interesting enough and there's a huge time to wait for the next international matches and I'm bored, so let's discuss it.

He was also the greatest German football pundit ever, simply because he could never be pleased and almost never said anything nice about anyone ever. It was awesome.
I really miss him insulting his co-commentator.

Netzer back then, Reus now! Football-world is in deep debt to Borussia M.Gladbach.
Netzer Reus
Also my special buddy Beckenmüller in this lineup... did not expect anything else!

Even though I would have loved to see Sepp Maier there, one can't find fault with Dino Zoff either. Another legendary keeper!

It's weird that Carlo included so many Germans.
Actually a very decent lineup, although Goal.com does much better with legends of old rather than current affairs.

Also, let's talk about Netzer some more and how he could've played together with Overrat in today's systems.
4-1-4-1 I say! With Netzer and Overrat as a double CAM.

I found that weird as well, especially since Carlo has often been quite quick to disregard any or most achievements of ze Germans.
BTW I think they do better with legends of old, because they're actually knowledgable about football, and there's just less bias involved if there's a couple years in between, while with current legends in the making, national and club bias plays a bigger role.

Yeah, I agree. They'd fit right at home in GL with the incredible knee jerk articles they make after some results.VivaStPauli wrote:Sushi Master wrote:It's weird that Carlo included so many Germans.

Re: Greatest European XI of all times?
Carlo only disregards achievements of the Bundesliga, he has long been fan of German NT and players.
I myself find the Cruyff to be more deserving of a spot over Zidane.
Also, a Van Baste, Muller front two would obliterate anything.
Would have appreciated if Carlo added a bench.

Did Carlo just pick more Germans than Italians in his piece?

Re: Greatest European XI of all times?
Yes, since this piece is entirely influenced by the Euro which Germany has been the most successful at.
You would have seen more parity and no Van Basten or Zidane if it have been the WC and Euro or the WC alone.
Regardless, Carlo's real bias is against English players whom he never rated.

Saying that would any English players be close to featuring in this?

For all of Cruyff's talent he didn't really achieve much at the Euro's. In fact as far as International careers go Germany '74 was his only real great tournament.
As for the rest of the team it very good and hard to disagree with considering the criteria.
I would have liked to see Panenka for the lulz though. Also Amancio deserves a shout.
Here's the team
-----------------Zoff-----------------
------Kaiser----Sammer-----Maldini---
Van Moer-----Netzer--Zidane-- Dzajic
---------------Platini----------------
--------Van Basteb---Muller---------

Re: Greatest European XI of all times?
That is actually a great list. Good to see Dzajic there. Very, very underrated player. One of the best wingers in history. Didi and Dzajic are arguably the best CM and best LW of all time, but no one puts them up with Maradona, Pele, Di Stefano, Cruyff, Beckenbauer etc. It's a shame.
