Re: Luiz Suarez
Alright folks, there's a lot of different quotes and (mis)information floating around re:Suarez at the moment so let's all cool our jets and get a good grip on the situation before jumping to any absurd conclusions.
First off, Suarez has not said that he "wants to leave" or any direct variation thereof as SkySports and several other news sources have reported today. They are taking a very creative translation and interpretation of the interview he gave yesterday that Echo had already covered. I have read the full transcript in original Spanish as well as in an accurate English translation (available below in spoilers). He DOES state that a change would not be bad this summer, but only in response to a direct question on that exact turn of phrase. It is clear that he is open and even wants a move to Spain this summer, but it is also clear from his quotes that he would be happy to stay at Liverpool and would give his all next season.
Funnily enough, even Florentino Perez's quotes have not escaped this little bit of creative interpretation. He said, "Suarez is a great player and I am sure all in the world would want him. I like him and others too, but it does not always fit." The first part has received plenty of attention and fuels much of the discussion about Madrid's interest, however a key part is mostly ignored (and at times even edited out altogether). "But it does not always fit" deserves some consideration as it suggests that while Perez himself admires Suarez's ability he may not believe that Suarez fits into Madrid on/off the pitch, or may defer to whichever manager eventually arrives. Madrid's supposed move for Luis may never materialize simply because they have other targets.
Also clear is that his motivations are not ENTIRELY related to the media as he claims. We [Liverpool] have not been in or even close to the CL during his time with us and we are not in European competition at all next season. Further, clubs such as Madrid and Barcelona could and would offer him a significant wage increase should either be interested in securing his services. Both of these issues clearly play a significant role in his current stance. That said, the English media, and by extension a notable portion of the British public HAS been on a bit of a witch hunt at times. Yes, he's brought much of the negative attention upon himself but there is simply no justification for:
The sensationalism and double standards are clear for all to see. However, as with any group English journalists and media have circled the wagons in response to Suarez's criticisms. It is as natural a reaction as it is frustrating. Even journalists who criticized their colleagues for the headlines and reports at the time of the event have suddenly changed their opinion and jumped on the "Suarez is using us as an excuse and was never misrepresented or defamed by any British media; we're the victims here!" bandwagon... and they have been very effective at pushing that agenda/message, so far.
It is plenty clear that Luis Suarez would welcome a move away from England this summer and that his motives are not as clear cut as he suggests. However, things are not as cut and dry as the media would make it seem, nor is Suarez victimizing them so much as they claim. He may well move this summer... he may also not. The outcome is not yet decided however, and the situation is still quite fluid. There are multiple agendas at play and Suarez's is only one of the factors in the eventual outcome.
I maintain that while Suarez does seem to prefer a move abroad, he would not be upset at another season with Liverpool. As things stand it seems unlikely that he will hand in a transfer request, though with his continuing consideration there's always the chance that this could change. This leaves the impetus on deciding his future to the clubs involved (Liverpool & Madrid or any other interested). For Liverpool he is an integral player: he is perhaps the most recognizable face off the pitch due to his (bad) publicity and is a massive, massive influence on it. The price of any player is decided by his importance to the club selling. It's up to Madrid to meet that price, be it the rumoured (and now defunct) buy-out clause or simply Liverpool's "too good to refuse" bar. Should Suarez be allowed to leave, it will almost certainly be for more than the Torres valuation... i.e. more than £50m. Only time will tell whether this happens and until such a time as it is decided, or the player/his agent make a definitive statement on the subject, let's be a bit judicious in our conclusions and assumptions. My only hope is that if he should move that the deal be down rather early in the summer, so that Liverpool and Rodgers have plenty of time to use the money raised effectively and efficiently in strengthening the team... if this drags on too long all first choice targets could be unavailable.
An unedited English transcript of his interview yesterday:
P.S. It is never, EVER acceptable to burn a kit. The name on the back doesn't matter, the crest on the chest and eternal flame DO.

An unedited English transcript of his interview yesterday:
- Spoiler:
- Q: What can you say about the repercussions [your statements had] on the international media?
#Suarez: "Every time I talk, it gets turned into something huge. I only said I'm very happy in Liverpool, I'll be forever grateful for the way the club and fans treated me. I love being there because it's a spectacular club and city, and I still have a contract there. I said it's hard to say no to Real Madrid because it's normal, you always dream about [being in] big teams. But I don't have anything yet, I haven't spoken neither to Real nor LFC, nobody, even my agent hasn't told me anything yet and that's what keeps me calm. What happens is that there have been speculations and that's why everything I say will be turned into something big.
Q: With that said, do you think it's the right time for a change?
#Suarez: "Yes, obviously. On the subject that I spoke about yesterday and will keep repeating, it's a complicated and difficult moment on which I am a human being and have feelings, and I've suffered because things have being said that aren't true. They haven't valued me as a player on the pitch but only my attitude so, it pisses you off. This has been going for a while so, you have limits, you have a family that suffers as well and it's really tough."
Q: "Do you feel identified with RM's playing style? There are other teams that want you so, which team's style do you identify at the moment?"
#Suarez: "To this day I feel identified with #Liverpool, not to mention I have a contract with them. They saw great potential in me and I grew up as a player in #Liverpool, but always in transfer windows there are many rumors, this [the window] is only getting started, I don't want to imagine what's to come next.”
Q: Yesterday you talked about LFC's support for you but, have you thought that the sensation the journalists and the FA transmit [to the people in England] could expand to the rest of Europe? [This question is a bit weird but it has to do with LS having a "reputation"]
#Suarez: "I don't think so, I think that the interested clubs will be interested in 'Suarez the player', not his attitudes. I made a mistake, I apologized and regretted it. I already said it, that's clear enough. And I think one [himself] should be more aware of the mistake I made in case I go to other club or stay at #LFC, I can't keep doing things wrong, I think I've learned and it's a lesson for the future."
Q: Are you aware that Atletico's interested in your services? and 2.- Are you seduced by spanish football because of its playing style or simply because the environment in England has gone complicated and turned unsuitable for you to continue?
#Suarez: I think that there will always be interest of clubs and it's going to be talked about a lot, but I've never got anything personally or [been asked] to talk with anyone of any team. But it's kind of the two things, one of them I always said it, In England, I'm in the best league in the world in my opinion, and the spanish league is up there too, they're two of the best leagues in the world.
In England [there] is spectacular football, and I think I've shown bravery, I've moved on with what happened on the racism case. And after this [Ivanovic case] I've felt bad because like I said, things have been said that made me feel uncomfortable. I have a daughter to look after, she's important too and I think [I should] put her out of that environment, of those things like "her father's bad". I'd rather change because of that, it doesn't have anything to do with #LFC or anything like that. It's just in the sense of me feeling bad, I'm a human being, I have feelings and I'd love to play in another league too."
Q: On a possible move, what do you prioritize the football aspect, the team you 'like' the best, or the economic?
#Suarez: "If it was down to the economic [reason] I would've already left for the countries that have been mentioned before but, I am prioritizing my family, my image and I think that's what I care about the most. I went through a complicated & difficult moment from which I'd love to get out, & I'm not saying this because I'm here [in Uruguay] or anything, but cause the manager and my teammates know what I went through. I was mistreated and didn't feel comfortable, they know that perfectly, and I think it'll be understandable if one day I get to leave #Liverpool."
Q: About the english press, what was the last straw [that broke the camel's back]?
#Suarez: "First of all, the thing of the paparazzi following all the time, every move I made, everything I did. I couldn't take my child to the park, go to the market or anything, it's something like, you're exposed, but well, not to mention they've said absurdities. Pictures every day, mockings, from which none [of the media] came forward to defend me.
I think-- I already knew the talk about me possibly being the Player of the Year, I said it on the club's website I think, that I [knew I] wasn't going to win any award because of the way they treated me. Our captain, Gerrard, came forward to say I wasn't being treated fairly, and well the last straw was the mistake I made, which I accepted, but they exceeded the limit as well."
Q: Now outside of England, but on the same line of thought. Are you surprised the incident in Chile got into the hands of FIFA?
#Suarez: Yes! It surprises you because if we look at everything that happens in the box we'd have like 5 or 10 actions where you feel like someone is getting suspended, it even happened last night on Boca vs. Newell's.
If everything's looked at, it will be complicated and there won't be any players left. Well, also it surprised me that the President of those who were watching me [Probably disciplinary committee] was english, irish, or somewhere around that, so you know where it's coming from. It's a constant thing, the Minister of I-don't-know-what was like "Suarez is this and that to the children" or something. He should worry about his business, we're trying to do our job here and I can't apologize more than I already did."
Q: Were you left wanting to see Evra? Because the Uruguayan public was expecting him to come and [so they could] show you their support
#Suarez: "No, at all. I already played against him a few times, it's on the past, I think it's something left behind and well, to me if he had come he was going to be just another player I could play against on the pitch."
Q: Do you have a deadline to say if you are going to stay or leave #Liverpool?
#Suarez: "No, I don't. I don't know if I'm going to leave and I don't know if I'm going to stay, the club knows perfectly what I think. They know what I went through but hey, I have a contract with #LFC, if I stay, I stay delightfully cause it's a spectacular club, but at the same time they know it's difficult cause of the harassment I received from the press there, and they know that perfectly"
P.S. It is never, EVER acceptable to burn a kit. The name on the back doesn't matter, the crest on the chest and eternal flame DO.

Re: Luiz Suarez
I will be making no further comments on this (in the General Section) until something there is a substantial and legitimate development in the situation (i.e. not Marca-reported or originating from any other rag given they've already had Suarez agree terms with Madrid, then talk with them, then state he wants to leave and would be open to Madrid all in that order and in the space of a week and a half).

A very good clarification of the situation. The interview sounds nothing like what the media have been reporting. I do think he is tired of the off what's happening on the non football front and perhaps the main factor in his willingness to seek a new environment.
Still think he can be persuaded to stay as he looks like a player who loves liverpool but won't be surprised if he does move to Madrid or somewhere

Great post Red.
I wouldn't take what Flo is saying too seriously just yet since he's still not won the elections. I do agree he might not pull the trigger on Suarez though, especially if we manage to land someone else.

Anyways, if he goes (and we get good money for him), I'll wish him the best of luck. Zero ill feelings towards him, he is a great professional and deserves to play at highest level.
He really is.
He works hard in practice, doesn't get drunk at night clubs, and gives it his all every game. What more can you expect from him?
The racism row is BS. If you actually read what happened evra milked it completely. Things are said in the games during the heat of the moment. Plus, for god fking sake, suarez is part black himself wtf are people still on about?
The biting thing was weird. but people have done much worse then this.
The punch he did was because the other player was literally molesting him.

Why doesn't he call a spade a spade and say the real reason he wants to leave is to play CL football.
Anyways....if he goes, good riddance. I hope it's to Russia so I don't have to see this despicable **** again.

Some will welcome him back with his first important goal. Others won't accept him back no matter what happens. Most will accept that he's needed if the club wish to push for a top 4 place and support him as a Liverpool player and member of the team, if not as an individual, until next summer when he's moved on.urbaNRoots wrote:Will Liverpool fans really accept him after his comments?

Pretty sure there have been many many images of him signing autographs and getting pictures with fans before/after training and practice sessions. The suggestion here is that he wouldn't be doing so if he was still expecting a move away this window as there would be no point.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Usually is the key word. He does it once in a blue moon but not as regularly as it's expected of a player whom the fans adored so much. Which is why it's kind of funny that he does it now right after such a controversy. So like Red said, the suggestion is that Suarez has accepted that he won't be leaving and is trying to mend his relationship back with the fans.Rebaño Sagrado wrote:I find that hard to believe but if you say so.McAgger wrote:He usually never does that after training.
