i don't know if you've heard this before, but book 5 is essentially the same time period as 4, but with all the characters that are interesting instead of the crap book 4 had.
- Spoiler:
- dani, tyrion, jon snow, the rest of arya's story and stannis
i'm only a little ways in, but DAMN

Re: Game of Thrones
Guys, if you have read the books, how do they compare with books like 'LOTR' and 'Harry Potter'? Is the story more engaging? Better experience than watching the TV series?

Re: Game of Thrones
goonbrain the key is that it's a more adult show. In LOTR and HP it's good vs evil, the good guys can do no bad, and the evil guys are completely evil. In GoT there are no good or bad guys, only shades of grey, there's sex and violence, and the conflicts are never clear, it only depends on your interpretation. I'd say it's better than the TV show because it's a richer experience.

I think i will definitely give it a try. I am totally into fantasy and absolutely loved LOTR and HP, the first being so diverse and epic while HP was perfect when i was reading it and it was very entertaining.
The tv show 'GoT' really intrigued me because of the treatment of the characters as absolutely human and it keeps reminding me of the ironies of life.
Gonna order it

Re: Game of Thrones
Goonbrain, if you've ever read harder fantasy than that stuff, GoT fits right in. It's not as detail-oriented as LOTR, which painted vivid pictures of everything - and at times got bogged down in it - so it's easier to get through quickly. Action generally keeps moving quickly. The difference with HP and LOTR though is that this isn't about any adventures; it's about the politics and inter-person relations more than anything else.
Also, a warning - the first season was VERY loyal to the first book, so it'll feel like you can skip it or that you're wasting time. I would suggest not doing that though, as you get much more in detail and correct phrasing than just skipping ahead to book 2 would do for you.

Thanks...i am not going to skip the first book even if the element of surprise is absent...a good read is a good read?

Absolutely. It's well written and will establish some background you'd be lacking otherwise. They changed around some of the dialogue and scenes for the TV show in terms of character development stuff - more concise ways to get to the same point, that type of thing. Reading the first one will let you in on little connections you may have missed otherwise. You'll also get a somewhat different feel for the characters... In the show, I really didn't like Jon Snow, for example, and his character in the book is incredible, while Ned Stark is presented less as the central protagonist. It's subtle stuff, but definitely worthwhile.

Re: Game of Thrones
Anyone who hasn't read the books. Get on amazon right now and order them. They are amazing reads. I was never much of a "book person" growing up, but these books are so excellent. They suck you in to the point where you think more about this fictional world in your spare time more than anything else. EVEN FOOTBALL.
If money is short, start reading online. http://www.bestfree-book.com/Vampires/A-Game-of-Thrones.html
George R R Martin knows he has obsessive fans and he writes the books so that you will keep finding new details which the TV shows never even mention.
I started by watching the first two seasons and then went back and read all the book. Any fan of the show, I urge you read the books.
You won't be disappointed

Word out is that all 10 episodes of this upcoming season are going to be about 56 minutes each, with the finale going over 60 minutes. This will be the show's longest season to date.

The show, for the most part, is pretty true to the books. The biggest difference is the timing of how some of the events happen and where some characters emerge and where others don't.

Re: Game of Thrones
So I watched this show for the first time last night, I've had the first two seasons for a while now but never watched it.. I like Medieval story lines and what not, but when I heard there is magic and elves (i think) and shit like that, it turned me off..
I had to have a girl talk me into watching it.. I'm going to have to re watch it since I missed a few parts though
It seemed ok so far, I heard all that magical crap comes into play later though

Seriously can't wait
Anyone feel the third season can beat the first season? I heard that there is going to be more Jamie in third season. So this will be definitely better than the second season
