Is a CF a striker?
Is a CF a striker?
Interesting question.
Do you consider a striker to cover all the positions upfront?
or differnt positions?
What players do you consider a CF and which a striker if you think they are different. There obviously players than can be both.

a CF is always a striker, but a striker is not always a CF

Poll added.
I have heard loads of differnt opinions, but I never really established what the real answer is.
The answer changes from country to country as well.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
This is too broad, mate. Well, firstly you all know we separate to GK, DF, MF, FW, but the people on the very outside are playing on a quite exclusive position. Striker is a part of FW. There are also deep lying forward and inside forward. Striker is divided to general striker who is upfront which is called advanced forward, striker who wait up top to hold and flick the ball and release the upcoming players called targetman, and a very goal searching pure breed whose main objective is really scoring goals characterised easily through their tendency of playing by the lastman's shoulder and always looking for great movement to get on the end of it called poacher. Deep-lying forward is divided to a forward who plays off an Up-Top Striker mainly supporting him called second striker and a forward who generally looks to go deep to help a lot in build up but played centrally without an Up-Top-Striker in front of him called false 9. The last forward type is inside forward who is a kind of a winger but in fact just started from the wide areas and mostly cutting inside to finish moves or creating opportunities. Inside forward is different from winger through the fact that the player more often than not is near the sidelines. That's all I could think off for a detailed explanation regarding this.

Striker = guy who's job it is to create or score goals.
CF = guy who scores a lot of goals, but not necessarily has to create them out of nothing.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
this has been my understanding of it:
The players that play along the forward line (CF, SS, and L/R FW in a 4-3-3) are strikers... there are players that only fit one role within the realm of striker... as well as players that encompass all forward positions (messi, CR7, etc).
When it comes to wingers, I think it depends on what style they play as. Messi and CR started out as Wingers but have developed into all-round strikers... Messi plays (on paper at least) as a CF, but he operates as a FW that can break down defences, pass the ball, or just score... a player like Krasic or Nani is just a winger IMO...

Di Maria, Krasic, Nani, Valencia, Robben, Johnson are not strikers, they are wingers or in initial RWF or if they play more withdrawn RMF. Hulk, Pedro, Suarez when wide, Sturridge are inside forwards or in your thread is considered a striker then So, the one you called CF is actually what I and many people think as Striker and the one you called striker is forward in general? I'm confused, but I think you mean it like that. :lol!:

Lol obviously Di Maria is not a striker.
A CF is often understood as the target man that scores the headers and is the big presence in the box and hold the ball up.

Oh I didn't pay attention. Obviously what Sushi meant was in context of the forward players, like I said in the long winded post if you play really-really wide you are in an exclusively different zone, the sideman. That's what you mean by CF? I though you mean strikers in general who could be further differentiated to advanced forward, targetman, and poacher. Well, if you think and say so, then CF is off course a striker. Rooney is quite a unique type as he is a complete forward who could play any roles in the forward line btw.

Aha! In my dictionary this:
Drogba, Ibra, Koller - Targetman Hold ball up, flick to upcumming person, typically tall and bulky
Torres, Ronaldo, Eto'o, Henry, Shevchenko, Romario, Cavani - Advanced Forward dribble, technical play, shoot, you name it, can create and finish chance by themselves
Pippo, Trez, Ruud, Chicarito, Fowler, Montella, Van Basten, Gomez - Poacher goal-machine, really because their skills is very focused on the art of finishing goals from crosses and through balls, though they can at certain skills to their footballing-vocab.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
So pretty much the thread is: are targetmen strikers? Which I would reply, yes they are.
But not all strikers are targetmen.
Similar scenario: Are all registas midfielders? Yes, but not all midfielders are registas.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
I hope were not talking about the FIFA CF here.
Anyway, IMO CF=Striker. Thats it really. Then there are SSs, Inside forwards, wingers, whatever, but Strikers for me include poachers, targetmen, etc.

Do you guys remember the argument of a Second Striker not being a Striker?
One of the most hilarious things in here...
If only i can remember who started it.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
CF = center forward.
I guess it depends on your definition. It can be the position, as in the central most forward position on the pitch. SS's can play here, too, just that tactically they're usually a little deeper, between AM and CF. So yeah, SS could be a CF.
I think the OP means CF as in big assed targetman or poacher, though.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
for me a striker solely occupies the forward most position, a CF can occupy all 3 forward positions
CF creates and supports
striker is a poacher/finisher
at least thats how i define it in my mind.

Re: Is a CF a striker?
A CF can't be considered to play on the wing forward position, because that just takes the C out of the CF.
