Alien encounters ‘within twenty years’

A top Russian astronomer say he expects humans to encounter extraterrestrial civilisations within the next two decades

Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer said on Monday.

“The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms … Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years,” said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Applied Astronomy Institute, according to the Interfax news agency.

Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.

If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

“They may have different colour skin, but even we have that,” he said.

Finkelstein’s institute runs a programme launched in the 1960s at the height of the cold war space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.

“The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilisations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way,” he said.

In March a Nasa scientist caused controversy after claiming to have found tiny fossils of alien bugs inside meteorites that landed on Earth.

Richard Hoover, an astrobiologist at the US space agency’s Marshall space flight centre in Alabama, said filaments and other structures in rare meteorites appear to be microscopic fossils of extraterrestrial beings that resemble algae known as cyanobacteria.

Writing in the Journal of Cosmology, Hoover claimed that the lack of nitrogen in the samples, which is essential for life on Earth, indicated they are “the remains of extraterrestrial life forms that grew on the parent bodies of the meteorites when liquid water was present, long before the meteorites entered the Earth’s atmosphere.”

There is no reason at all for alien civilizations to colonize Earth. It would be too much of a hassle.

I only hope of this coming true. I have this awesome book on the matter which puts everything into perspective. We are just so insignificant and relative to galactic terms, we're a baby civilization who have only been on the lookout for other life for a few decades, and in limited ammounts and frequencies.

No REASON? if we have an important resource they want, they will take it and vice versa. If you watched the movie avatar you would know what this is about.

Chances are there are other life forms out there, but I think it will take longer than 20 years for us to encounter them.

i persnally do not believe that there's an intellegent life in outer space. Our planet is one of the newest planets in the universe, and that means other habitable planets existed billions of years before ours, so if life was found on one of these planets, that civilization would be billions of years ahead of us and they would have the needed technology to find us !

why didnt they ? i mean we cant even send a man to Mars and yet we're scanning the universe looking for clues for other forms of life, why wouldnt they be doing the same thing ?

Aliens are defiantly out there intelligent and primitive...

Im not sure how contact with an intelligent alien race would happen though. Some say we would benefit from such and an encounter and others say that It would be a complete slaughter of our civilization as they rape our resources. (As above so below)

Honestly I would like us to find something living outside this earth to prove the naysayers that don't believe there is anything outside of earth wrong!!

Maybe these species have the intellectual ability of animals on earth
Like they could be just a species that has evolved but they just maintain their lives and don't progress further forwards (e.g. technology, buildings).
Take fish for example, been around for as long (probably longer) than the evolution of man yet all they do is eat, sleep and procreate (or get eaten anywhere in between).
They could just be living and not progressing, hence the reason why there has been no contact.
