Messi was still the false 9, its just to play with a false 9 you cant have a tradional 10. Zonalmarking called it, needing a false 10, which Cesc is. He is like Mole said in a mocking way, Spanish Lampard. Cesc makes runs into the box away from the ball, times them well and can finish. So when Messi is doing his false 9 and dropping deep, Cesc has the ability of a "false 10" and he runs into that space in on goal.

Messi is false 9 - looks like central foward, but he is G.O.D.
Fabregas is false 10 - looks like attacking midfielder - but he is central foward
Villa is false 11 - looks like winger, but he is left striker
Pedro is false 7 - looks like winger, but he is right striker
Alves is false 2 - looks like right back, but he is winger
Valdes is false 1 - looks like keeper, but he is sweeper
Busquets is false 6 - looks like defensive midfielder, but he is sweeper and playmaker

It seemed to me that Messi made far less runs into the box than he usually does for Barca and that this was mainly due to Cesc's presence in front of him, relegating him to mostly playmaking, so I just assumed a 9 and 10 relationship - reinforced by the comments made by the commentators. But what you're saying makes more sense. Is there a precedent for this "false 10"?

Well I think Messi came deep, leaving the space he usually does, Cesc took that space with his runs therefore Messi didnt have to. If Cesc wasnt there, Messi would of played differently.

Precedent for a false 10? I am not sure.

But it was said that, and correctly, for a false 9 to work, the target is to come deep and overload midfield and playmake. For this to happen, of course you cant have a normal number 10 because they would do this job. We have 2 CMs in Xavi and Iniesta who dont play in between the lines permanently like a number 10 and therefore that situation wont occur.

However, to play with 4 mids like we did, the space is taken up so if Messi is to do what he usually does, someone has to play in front of him (in effect making Messi a normal number 10) or behind him and make off balls runs into that space, which Cesc did do.

I dont remember it ever being done before.
