Obama says: "Tripoli is slipping from the hands of a tyrant". Good on Obama to actually realize what's going on, unlike some people Rolling Eyes

Also, people, stop calling us "rebels". We are Freedom Fighters! ☀

Plus, FFs are saying that all of Tripoli is under control except for Bab-Al-Aziziyah, which is the most pro-Gaddafi area in Tripoli.

That was reported by Al Jazeera so there's gotta be some sort of truth to it. But I wouldn't be too hast y in believing it.

Update: Large amounts of forces from the National Liberation Army of Libya is now arriving into Tripoli to fully secure and stabilise the city.

Good to hear. The only real area still under Gaddafi control is Bab Al Azaziyah and few other areas. With huge amounts of the Liberation Army coming to Tripoli, securing the capital is almost 100% done!!!

Good thing that SOB Gaddafi is finished.

I remember him paying the ransom(more than required) for all hostages of the Abu-Sayyaf in my country to make him look good but in reality he just supplies them with money. lol

Tricky sick Bastard.

"Rebel" doesn't usually follow with a negative connotation. Not according to my books, at least.

I wish more people took the rebel assignment even in so-called "modern" democracies. A lot of dumb sh*t goes on with few voices to battle it.

Either way, I'm also very happy that Gaddafi is being taken care of. It's the most important step to get Libya back on track again and - perhaps - to inspire the rest of the region to follow suit.

All I can say is wait and see. The new government did acknowledge the the possible threat of Islamists, and I think things will run pretty smoothly in regards to the West interfering.

Not many other new things to be noted to day:

The head of the NTC warns against seeking vengeance from those who were supporting Gaddafi, because in the end, they're Libyans, brothers.

And despite everybody in the country celebrating, it's still not over yet. There are still FEW pockets of resistance throughout the capital, the biggest being Bab Al-Aziziyah, the only area left in the capital which is still predominantly Gaddafi's. People are being warned to take care, because the opposition (pro-Gaddafi) still have sleeper cells, a few missiles, and other types of weapons.

If I wanted to give an overview, I'd say that 95% of the cities in Libya are under Freedom Fighter control. The only major cities still predominantly under Gaddafi control are Sirt (Gaddafi's hometown, some of his brigades are still there), Sabha, and Bani Waleed (a place where Gaddafi's been bringing mercenaries from all over Africa to kill his own people). Zlitan still has some of Gaddafi's brigades, and the city is still being fought for. I'd say that Zlitan is 60% under FF control. The rest of the major cities in Libya are completely under FF control.

And Gaddafi is still at large, so until he is captured, this war isn't over yet.

I guess it depends on how the person understands the word "rebels". Some people associate the word with riots from what I've gathered.

And yup, the Arab Spring is definitely for a good cause. I hope Syrians are inspired by what happened in Libya so they can take Assad down quickly.

There've been a couple of recent setbacks:

First, Mohammad Al-Gaddafi, who was under house arrest by the Freedom Fighters since last night, was freed by Gaddafi's forces.

Also, many firefights are erupting right now in areas of Tripoli. But rest assured, the capital is still under FF control.

On a positive note, many FFs coming from Misrata have finally arrived at Tripoli, expect them to help restore order.

Saif al-Islam Qaddafi appears in Tripoli: I was never detained. We are winning.

Saif al-Islam Qaddafi is back
In an extraordinary turnabout in the Tripoli standoff between West-backed Libyan rebels and Muammar Qaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam turned up with cheering crowds at the Rixos hotel early Tuesday, Aug. 23, and told foreign reporters he was never captured as widely reported. "We are winning,"he said.

His detention was not only reported by the rebels but "confirmed" embarrassingly by the International Criminal Court's prosecutors.
"The rebels fell into a trap," said Saif, asserting his father was in Tripoli running the fight against the rebels who have suffered heavy losses. "We control the capital," he said. "The people are with us, but communications are jammed." He spoke of attempts to sow chaos in Libya by controlling the electronic media, then took reporters on a tour of the capital to show them that "the situation is excellent."

DEBKAfile adds that Qaddafi forces Monday night freed his brother Muhammad Qaddafi from rebel hands.

Saif al-Islam's appearance and his boisterous welcome by Tripoli crowds holding his father's picture aloft accountd for President Barack Obama's caution earlier Monday over confirming the widespread claims by NATO and the UK that Qaddafi was finished.

Monday night, DEBKAfile reported: For the first time in the six-month war against Muammar Qaddafi's regime, NATO troops, despite denials, are taking part in the fighting on the ground as British and French "military advisers" – members of special operations units – help Libyan rebels fight for control of the Libyan capital Tripoli. This contest is evolving into a war of intelligence, as DEBKAfile's military sources disclose. Qaddafi's counter-offensive aims at separating the Western troops from the small numbers of rebels – no more than 2,500-3,000.

Sources close to that contest estimate that if Qaddafi's roughly 5,000 loyal troops in the capital can achieve this goal, they will have enhanced their chances of reversing the tide of battle.

Those sources refute some media claims that the rebels already control 80-90 percent of Tripoli and say they were left with no more than one third of the city by Monday night, Aug. 22. In the day and a night since they entered the capital, Qaddafi's 12th Division has recovered some of the territory the rebels captured in their first push.

US President Barack Obama, in his statement Monday night, accurately diagnosed the Libyan situation as "fluid and uncertain" - although, he said, "Qaddafi's regime is coming to an end and passing into the hands of the people." Fierce fighting is still going on, he said, and there are "reports of regime elements threatening to continue fighting." The president called on Qaddafi "to stop the bloodshed by calling on them to lay down arms for the sake of Libya" and "relinquish power without delay."

Obama's words somewhat cooled the exuberant assertions by NATO and some of its members that Qaddafi is no longer a force to be reckoned with and the war all but over.

His words also aimed at moderating expectations of its successor. He urged the formation of a "peaceful, inclusive and just coalition" of forces and warned that "justice would come from conciliation, not violence."
Read DEBKAfile's step by step accounts below on the fall of the Qaddafi regime in Tripoli from Sunday night, Aug. 21.

Heavy fighting was raging Monday, Aug. 22, around Muammar Qaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli less than a day after Libyan rebels captured most of the capital unopposed and Muammar Qaddafi's regime in the capital was written off. His son Khamis led a tank force fighting from positions taken up at the compound and Tripoli port, signaling that the forces loyal to the Libyan ruler and his family were ready to fight for their survival and Qaddafi was not ready to relinquish power as demanded by US President Barack Obama Sunday night.

For the last two weeks, Khamis, the most talented general of Qaddafi's sons, avoided using tanks outside Tripoli for fear of losing them in NATO air strikes, DEBKAfile's military sources report. The rebels heading into Tripoli from Zawiya Sunday were unopposed by obstacles.

However, Monday, when defeat looked the regime and family in the face, Khamis switched tactics. He reckoned that the tanks would be safe from NATO attack among the civilians crowding the city streets.

Another Qaddafi son, Saif al-Islam, was apparently detained by the rebels who are negotiating his handover for trial to the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity. However, another son, Al-Mu'tasim Billah al-Qaddafi, may be expected to join Khamis on the battlefield quite soon.

Al-Mu'tasim, who is also highly regarded as an operational commander, heads Libya's Special Forces Brigades and the regime's intelligence arm. His whereabouts like those of his father are unknown. The Libyan has not been seen lately although Sunday, he sent audio messages to state television calling on all Libyans to rally and save Tripoli from the same fate as Baghdad.

Saif al Islam, a non-military figure, was never his father's choice for successor. His fluent English language skills and the knowledge of Western ways and media he acquired during years spent in Britain made him a useful spokesman for the regime in the six months of the war.

Saif took advantage of the limelight to pose as Qaddafi's Number Two.
However, Khamis and Al-Mu'tasim ran the all-important military side of Qaddafi's campaign against the NATO-backed rebellion. More than once, they saved the family from near- disaster - notably against concerted US- British-French Odyssey Dawn air operation against the ruler's power centers in Tripoli on March 19.

According to some of DEBKAfile's sources, the embattled ruler may have decided to throw Saif al-Islam to the wolves to distract NATO commanders' notice from the two sons leading his fight for survival on the battlefield.
Monday, British Prime Minister David Cameron was concerned to move on towards establishing a new government in Tripoli when he said, "The regime is falling apart" and "Our task now is to do all we can to protect the will of the Libyan people."

Qaddafi and his sons are now fighting to demonstrate that although the rebels have seized most of Tripoli, there is still no power vacuum waiting for them to step into.

Through Monday, more rebel columns headed towards Tripoli in pick-up trucks with heavy machine-guns mounted at the back. Plenty more fighting and bloodshed is still ahead of Libya before the crisis is over

After midnight Sunday, Aug. 21, DEBKAfile reported: The Qaddafi regime falls in Tripoli
Muammar Qaddafi's regime fell in Tripoli just before midnight Sunday, Aug. 22. The rebels advanced in three columns into the heart of the capital after being dropped by NATO ships and helicopters on the Tripoli coast. Except for pockets, government forces did not resist the rebel advance, which stopped short of the Qaddafi compound of Bab al-Aziziyah.

After one of his sons Saif al Islam was reported to be in rebel hands and another, Mohammad, said to have surrendered, Qaddafi's voice was heard over state television calling on Libyans to rise up and save Tripoli from "the traitors." Tripoli is now like Baghdad, he said. For now, his whereabouts are unknown.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said 1,200 people had been killed in the 12 hours of the rebel push towards the capital. As he spoke, Libyan rebels, backed by NATO, seized control of the capital. After holding out for six months, the Qaddafi regime was to all intents and purposes at an end.
Still to be answered are seven questions raised here by DEBKAfile's analysts:

1. Where are the six government special divisions whose loyalty to the Libyan ruler and his sons was never in question? None of the 15,000 trained government troops were to be seen in the way of the rebel advance into the capital. The mystery might be accounted for by several scenarios: Either these units broke up and scattered or Qaddafi pulled them back into southern Libya to secure the main oil fields. Or, perhaps, government units are staying out of sight and biding their time in order to turn the tables on the triumphant rebels and trap them in a siege. The Libyan army has used this stratagem before.

2. How did the ragtag, squabbling Libyan rebels who were unable to build a coherent army in six months suddenly turn up in Tripoli Sunday looking like an organized military force and using weapons for which they were not known to have received proper training? Did they secretly harbor a non-Libyan hard core of professional soldiers?

3. What happened to the tribes loyal to Qaddafi? Up until last week, they numbered the three largest tribal grouping in the country. Did they suddenly melt away without warning?

4. Does Qaddafi's fall in Tripoli mean he has lost control of all other parts of Libya, including his strongholds in the center and south?

5. Can the rebels and NATO claim an undisputed victory? Or might not the Libyan ruler, forewarned of NATO's plan to topple him by Sept. 1, have decided to dodge a crushing blow, cede Tripoli and retire to the Libyan Desert from which to wage war on the new rulers?

6. Can the heavily divided rebels, consisting of at least three militias, put their differences aside and establish a reasonable administration for governing a city of many millions? Their performance in running the rebel stronghold of Benghazi is not reassuring.

7. DEBKAfile's military and counter-terror sources suggest a hidden meaning in Qaddafi's comment that Tripoli is now like Baghdad. Is he preparing to collect his family, escape Tripoli and launch a long and bloody guerrilla war like the one Saddam Hussein's followers waged after the US invasion of 2003 which opened the door of Iraq to al Qaeda?

If that is Qaddafi's plan, the rebels and their NATO backers, especially Britain and France, will soon find their victory wiped out by violence similar to – or worse than – the troubles the US-led forces have suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yup, it's true that Saif hasn't been detained yet, but EVERYTHING else he said was complete BS.

He started off with the usual crap "Oh NATO are bombing us, killing our families, blah blah sob blah"

Then he said that Tripoli is still completely under his father's control, and that he can go anywhere he wants in Tripoli, which pissed me off, because that is a big lie.

First, over 90 PERCENT of Tripoli is under the control of the Freedom Fighters. The ONLY major area still under Gaddafi's control is Bab Al-Aziziyah.

Second, I dare Saif to go to Martyr's Square. I dare Saif to go to Tajoura. I dare Saif to go to Soug Al Jumaa. I dare Saif to go to the airport. I dare Saif to go to Janzour. The point is, HE CAN'T. He can't go ANYWHERE outside Bab Al-Aziziyah. He's confined to Bab Al-Aziziyah. And Bab Al-Aziziyah is surrounded by thousands of FFs. If he steps outside once he'll be captured immediately.

UPFDATE: Bab Al-Aziziyah has been infiltrated, Gaddafi's home is now being SEARCHED! lmaoo, Gaddafi may be outside Tripoli, but some of his sons are inside Bab Al-Aziziyah for sure (including Saif). Expect some people to be arrested tonight! :flower:

So, the last safe area for Gaddafi's troops has finally been infiltrated. Good going! ☀

Here's a situation map of Libya, if anyone's interested:

Black dot: Under Freedom Fighter control.
Green dot: Under Gaddafi control.
Blue dot: Ongoing fighting.

Gaddafi's Regime is Collapsing! - Page 5 Libyan_Uprising

Looks really good, the only major cities under Gaddafi control are Sirte, Bani Waleed, Sabha, and Bin Jawad (small but important). The rest is under FF control.

To be honest, I'm quite bummed that Bani Waleed hasn't been controlled yet, it's where Gaddafi's been getting most of his African fighters from.

And I'd like to point out that Tripoli should be black, not blue. FFs have control over 93-95% of the capital, doesn't that make them worthy of a black dot?

Update: The last safe area in Tripoli for Gaddafi's forces, Bab Al-Aziziyah, is ALMOST fully under FF control. FFs have announced that they have SEVENTY PERCENT of Bab Al-Aziziyah under control! They've got loud speakers all over the area ASSERTING THEIR DOMINANCE over Bab Al-Aziziyah.

This is great news, all I hope is that nobody's set up some demonic plan to blow the area up or something. Apart from that, Bab Al-Aziziyah is almost liberated!

British, French, Jordanian, Qatari special forces batter Qaddafi's compound

debkafile's military sources report that British, French, Jordanian and Qatari Special Operations forces are Tuesday, Aug. 23, spearheaded the rebel "killer strike" on Muammar Qaddafi's regime and Tripoli fortress at Bab al-Azaziya, Tripoli. This was the first time Western and Arab ground troops had fought together on the same battlefield in any of the Arab revolts of the last nine months and the first time Arab soldiers took part in a NATO operation.

Our military sources report that the British deployed SAS commandoes and France, 2REP (Groupe des commando parachutiste), which is similar to the US Navy DELTA unit, as well as DINOP commandos. Fighting too were Jordan's Royal Special Forces, specialists in urban combat and capturing fortified installations like the Qaddafi compound in Tripoli, and the Qatari Special Forces, which were transferred from Benghazi where they guarded rebel Transitional National Council leaders.

According to our military experts, even after getting through into the compound, this combined force faced four obstacles to before reaching its military heart which is largely underground:
1. Because it is too small to carry the two tasks of breaking into the heart of the Bab al-Azaziya complex which covers some 6 square kilometers and at the same time overwhelm Qaddafi's 12th Tank Division also underground, this force needed to be backed by larger trained contingents armed with anti-tank weapons, which would advance into the labyrinth under close air cover from assault helicopters.
Britain and France transferred Apaches to Libya two months ago but never used them in Tripoli where they would be vulnerable to Qaddafi's anti-air missiles.

2. The main body of the rebels to the rear of the combined foreign force was nowhere near being a unified military force.

The rebels who took part in the first major push into Tripoli Sunday, Aug. 21, turned out to be mostly Berber tribal fighters from the Nafusa Mountains in the West, divided into small groups of no more than 100, each representing a different village. They have never trained together or acquired experience in urban warfare. NATO imported better-trained fighters by sea from Benghazi and Misrata.

3. The great black clouds seen over the compound and caused by NATO jet bombardments and anti-tank fire may look menacing but they are not evidence of heavy fighting in or around the compound. And indeed it was soon over. As the rebel forces burst in, there was no sign of Qaddafi himself or his family and commanders. They were presumed to have fled.

4. NATO was short of specific intelligence about the military nucleus of Bab al-Aziziya. Most of its key facilities are underground and proof against bombardment.
Western alliance warplanes pummelled the compound month after month from March 19. They flattened the surface residential buildings and command centers, but their ordnance never reached the buried facilities. Our military sources say these chambers are interconnected by a network of corridors, some broad enough to accommodate tanks. The network branches out to the sea and locations outside Tripoli.
Sunday, Aug. 21, debkafile's military sources reported that the Qaddafi regime has fallen in Tripoli, but there is quite a way to go before the war is over.

Yup, NATO's bombings actually paved the way for FFs to reach the center of Bab Al-Aziziya. Now FFs control 90% of Bab Al-Aziziya, and many Gaddafi loyalists were captured/surrendered themselves (Imported African mercenaries were among them). If there are any loyalists still in the remaining 10% of the area, they'll be caught.

About the 2nd point, it's kind of understandable, the FFs that are currently in Tripoli came from all over Libya. Misrata, Al-Zawiyah, Brega, Gmata, even Benghazi, etc. They're coming from all over the country, and a lot of them are civilians fighting for their country, so it's kind of expected if they aren't fighting as a unified force. Once Tripoli is settled, I expect them to become a unified force.

This war is expected to end in 72 hours, thank God! Very Happy

Btw, NOBODY deserves a journalism award more than Alex Crawford of SKY. So courageous, she was the first reporter in the just-liberated Martyr's Square, and she was the first reporter on the scene in Bab Al-Aziziya. If she doesn't get an award, then the award-giving committee should have their heads checked!

Also, some guy went into Gaddafi's compound and took his hat. He says he's going to give it to his father:

I expect relations with UAE and Qatar to soar once everything is settled. The amount of humanitarian and military aid they provided us with is amazing to be honest. They deserve all the credit they get, an I won't be surprised if Libya forms some strong friendships with the two of them.

Also, massive props to Turkey, USA, England, France, and Tunisia. They helped us out a lot along with the UAE and Qatar and deserve credit as well.
