Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
I reckon he went with the safest option which usually is through the middle but Lunin read him excellentlyPedram wrote:Silva wanted to humiliate Lunin and it backfired in his face
After a season like this Lunin is asking serious questions about the starting berth

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
No way we don't win the CL now. City was our biggest threat and we dumped them out against all odds. Will be so pissed if we go out to Bayern with the season they are having and having gotten past our bogey team

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
RMad did their homework and that was why Lunin knew what Silva would likely do. That’s why Lunin went to bench before penalties to read notes.

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
Carlo Ancelotti is the first manager to knock Pep Guardiola out of the Champions League in three different campaigns.

Oh for sure. But here's the thing: You can allow a CM to "cheat" on the attack with a combo of the following 3 factors:
- You have a great defensive mid, which Tchouameni is. Cama... maybe. The rest, not so much.
- The defensive is great, especially at CB. With Alaba and Militao both out, I don't think this holds true. It did for the first half of the season.
- You have a talent advantage. Not going to be the case starting in QF stage of CL.
To allow Bellingham to play that far forward, you need to compensate. RM did in the first half of the season. My contention is that it won't be able to in the 2nd half of the season UNLESS Carlo plays a 442 diamond.
So at some point, Vini and Rodrygo are going to have to carry the scoring load because Bellingham will nee to play more the CM role as opposed to the 10 if we play a 433.
sportsczy wrote:futbol_bill wrote:And why does he have to a CM role when there are 3 very competent midfielders behind him.
Because a CF is extremely important against elite defenses... otherwise the CBs and holding mids on those teams can get very aggressive since they don't have to worry about a CF making proper runs.
We can play a 442 and hope that it works... but I am predicting it won't in CL. No width + No real scorer = Big defensive advantage to the opponent
But what choice do we have until the summer? I am hopeful this season, but i do not expect us to win CL. City will eat us alive. Bayern as well IMO. Opponents will also adjust to our lack of CF and play Bellingham a lot closer generally. I refuse to believe that opposing managers will defend RM as if we have a CF, which is what's been happening so far. They will get more aggressive with their CBs.
That said, La Liga doesn't have any elite teams due to Barca injuries so we have a good chance there.
@Sportsczy - your bold predictions didn’t age very well!

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
Barcalearning PSG is nowhere near a top team just because they embarrassed Barça nor are they underrated. They are rated fine as they are and Xavi is indeed a sore loser.
Arsenal too should have gone through against the worst Bayern in the last 15 years so Im sure reasons can be given to hold ones head up high but its all cope. Disappointing result even if they played better than Bayern.
Glad Real went through as I will always support Don Carlo and a bit annoyed with the recent happy go lucky Pep reels in training and want Carlo to have his 5th UCL to cement himself as the undisputed king of the comp.

Look Im happy for Lunin as he probably proved his own very teammates wrong but fact is that was just a very poorly taken penalty.

Would probably have given it to Lunin but Valverde has been overlooked far too many times this season so he deserves itPedram wrote:

Real Madrid is the polar opposite. Didn't have the tools, got it done. Arsenal had the tools, didn't get it done.
say that again with a straight face... didn't have what tools?? third best player in the world Vinicius Jr and the most expensive signing from the past summer window Bellingham... yea right

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
Real no doubt would have wrecked Arsenal given they got knocked out by a very milquetoast Bayern
UCL pedigree is real though and Bayern are basically 3rd of all time in that.

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
N have to mention the EPL being the best league argument again, I mean LOL? 2 of the worst German teams ever in the semis. When does it end? Real n PSG from the 'farmers league', etc.
Bookies now have Real strong favs, then Bayern n PSG around the same, Dortmund a distant remote chance winner

I realise the pain is fresh for you but Arsenal paid a similar price for Rice. Also don't you constantly claim Saka is better than Vini?
Real was playing the best team in the world without Courtois, Tchouameni and Alaba and Militao was barely even fit. They absorbed pressure from City for practically the entire game with a backup GK and Nacho in defense. Those are winners.
Arsenal played the weakest Bayern in 20 years with a full squad and did nothing. Those are losers.

Re: 23/24 UCL Knockout Stage
Very impressed with the team honestly. I really didn't think Madrid would beat City in the return leg, especially considering we were playing with many key players out injured.
When City equalized, I really thought the game would shift to City's favor, but Madrid held on brilliantly and didn't lose hope, event at times when City was viciously attacking on all fronts.
Bravo to them, I didn't want City to win it back to back and Madrid made sure of that.
